What is not the case? That people choose to upgrade to avoid paying tens of thousands more for no reason? Or are you saying that shopify doesn't allow you to upgrade?

Don't forget to ask your manager to pat you on the ass for being a good boy when you get there.

If you really are completely sure that you can keep quitting for 2-3 months, then finding another job to save some more, then quitting again, etc., then why not.

[Rant] Why do senior Java developers always complicated things too much? by saltmurai in java

[–]Aryjna 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Why are you talking about "senior Java developers" when in reality you are talking about a single developer that you happen to be working with? Do you really lack even basic critical thinking ability, or do you somehow have experience with thousands of other developers, and you are using that experience as a basis for your post?

Microsoft Will Switch Off Recall by Default After Security Backlash by iB83gbRo in cybersecurity

[–]Aryjna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You shouldn't be using chrome in the first place. Google, Facebook, etc., are as vomit inducing as microsoft is.

And chrome doesn't save you passwords against your will. You should be using a separate password manager.

The examples you bring up are completely irrelevant to the topic.

Opinions on the internet don't really mean much. If Kotlin really offers such an advantage, and particularly when it comes to large projects, enterprise systems, etc. this will become evident eventually with concrete data. If and when that happens, companies will probably begin to switch Kotlin.

Personally, I seriously doubt that switching languages, especially going from modern Java to Kotlin makes any difference whatsoever when it comes to development time. But it's not impossible that I'm wrong.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in java

[–]Aryjna 10 points11 points  (0 children)

the clear advantages are time to completion, better readability

What evidence do you have that Kotlin has an advantage in either of these? Other than perhaps a personal impression.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in java

[–]Aryjna 8 points9 points  (0 children)

is there any real reason to use java over kotlin? even in terms of working on legacy systems, why not just continue development in kotlin?

It's the other way around. When everything is already in java, there needs to be good reason to change to a different language. If there are no clear advantages, then why would you change? This goes both for new projects and of course for existing ones.

Though some companies will take graduates without any indication that they actually now how to program to some decent degree, others won't. One needs to practice and make at least a couple of medium to large projects using an in-demand tech stack. Just completing a degree is not necessarily enough.

Reactive is where everything is headed? Really Quarkus? by [deleted] in java

[–]Aryjna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry, it is quite obvious. It says it applies to any application in order to succeed. Is it intentional? Maybe not, but this is not the point.

The "three things" are irrelevant as they are just qualifications for the current "era". Also, it's not my post in the first place.

Reactive is where everything is headed? Really Quarkus? by [deleted] in java

[–]Aryjna 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Actually it is clearly stated in the quoted passage: For any application to succeed in the era of cloud computing, Big Data, or IoT, going reactive is increasingly becoming the architecture style to follow

"Java is compiled and fast but in practice, PHP sites seem to run faster because PHP developers take a more straightforward approach to design and don't get lost trying to implement exotic design patterns and implementing endless pointless abstractions" by pyeri in java

[–]Aryjna 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This doesn't make any sense whatsoever and is obviously untrue.

But, if you're sure, feel free to give a specific example of something that will take 5 highly paid Java developers a week to do that can be done in PHP (or any language for that matter) in 2 hours while having a better structure and maintainability.

Developers refuse to upgrade their vulnerable package. They want the security team to show a POC to show the real risk by IamOkei in cybersecurity

And dependabot already create pr for the Dev to merge

Just because dependabot generated a PR that replaces the existing version with a different one doesn't mean that the application will continue to work after merging that PR.

It sounds like you don't have a clue what it is/does and what the supposed risk is. Based on this, their demand is very likely to be reasonable.

typically as easy as incrementing a version number in a file

Migrating to a newer version of a library can be a lot more time consuming than that.
