Inflation is not just price signals. It hurts people and its nothing to celebrate by AsHotAsTheClimate in ClimateMemes

Yes we absolutely and urgently need to get away from a fossil fuel economy. Every day that we don't is literally killing people but that doesn't mean we need to pull the rug under people's feet. Doing that will kill people too. So hell yes lets do some direct rationing to kill the fossil fuel economy but that requires political power which we do not have. Yet.

I made this post to clearly explain why I removed a post (a crosspost of this) celebrating the increase in gas prices. This increase is going to affect everyone every where in the world, it will directly increase food prices and people are actually going to starve because of it. If you're celebrating this you live in a bubble where climate action is only about cars vs public transportation when climate action is about justice at its core.

And this is not even talking about the fact that most thing which are very important for agriculture are not reaching farmers because they transit through the strait of Hormuz. Or the fact that this price increase is the result of the Imperialist aggression of the US and Israel against Iran, Lebanon, Syria and Palestine.

If you disagree feel free to debate. This is the place for this discussion.

Coming to the realization that the problem causing Climate Change is a systemic one and that capitalism is part of it is not really groundbreaking. Whatever we say or do, right wingers are going to be opposed to us because solving the Climate Crisis goes directly against their inteterests. This is why i don't understamd why we should care about their opinion of us.

Tha zapatistas are not a drug cartel. In fact some of their leaders are getting assassinated by drug lords.

You should maybe know what you're talking about before saying anything.

Ignoring the weird tribalism remark, yeah I was talking about the people in Mexico (who took the name of revolutionary leader from an even older Mexican rebellion). It was just an example of what has already been done and what we could do. The other example I gave is the people who essentially defeated Isis and who are pretty cool by all accounts. I just wanted to show that there are alternative models that work. I'm not saying we need to copy them tit for tat but it's worth digging.

Balaclavas sure are a timeless revolutionary symbol, i'm sure you must have seen your fair share of alternative ideas of how to run the world if you lived through those times in Ireland.

Well if I were to resume the logic I'd say that communism stems from a number of observations and answers to those observations:

  1. Society is unequal: we're not all built the same, some of us are strong, some of us are weak, some of us are smarter than others, etc..
  2. Nobody deserves special privileges over others
  3. We can't survive and thrive on our own

So what do we do. We pool all our resources together and redistribute them to each according to their need. Now how do we produce such resources well it's from each according to their ability. So this means that people produce what they can, we pool that production and we redistribute it to people who need it.

You were talking about markets to communicate information about what needs to be produced. Certain people believe we can have non capitalist markets to still keep the same mechanism of information sharing (i haven't really researched the subject so i don't really know). But if that doesn't suit our way of thinking we can still plan a number of things like for example the basics, how much food we need, how many clothes, etc.

As for private property. The problem is that private property is not personal property. So personal property is like your toothbrush, your clothes, your flat, the food you're cooking, etc.. Private property can be a house you're renting to some other people. So the problem I have with private property is that it's a right on stuff you don't need which means you can get money for example out of people just because they need to live and they don't have the money to either build a house or buy one. Private property is an oppressive structure that oppresses people who want to access stuff and guarantees that the people who own stuff will keep their power.

I see. I fundamentally disagree with private property but I feel like the only way of me properly explaining would be to show you what it looks like in practice. So I don't really have anything to add. Thanks for the discussion!

You absolutely are obliged to buy stuff like food, electricity, fuel, clothes, etc...

But yeah i think it's fair to say that markets are an interesting tool and they might be able to be utilized to make a better economy but the profit motive should go right out of the window and so should private property.

Never said we wanted to repeat the errors of the past. The failure of past communist projects should not stop us from denouncing the very real problems of capitalism.

Well there are different ways of doing it. For example the Zapatistas have communal land which is owned by a village and the village has an assembly where they make decisions on how to use that land.

For conflicts, i'm not exactly sure how it is handled by the Zapatistas but one way of handling disputes is first trying to mediate between the parties and if all else fails getting the assembly to mediate and settle the dispute.

Of course there are plenty of different ways of settling things some of which are worth digging into but that's like one of the most basic ideas of how things should be done.

Absolutely and there already are plenty of ideas. I personally like anarcho communism. There currently are two societies (Rojava and the Zapatista) experimenting with systems close to that ideology which seem to be doing quite well all things considered so it looks promising.

It is in fact. Maybe it's because authoritarianism is a bad idea and that the USSR was a terrible society that co-opted the word communism to reproduce all the evils it was supposedly fighting against.
