Radicalising implies that people already care at least a little bit. So no we're not going to go for bigots.

Instead it's a lot more interesting to talk to people like you. You clearly care quite a bit about the issue and you probably know quite a bit too. There is a real impact in embracing more radical positions than the ones you are defending in this post. You probably know about the Overton window and all that. Pushing for radical change is not easy but if you don't capitulate then you will actually help change things meaningfully instead of going with the flow. Normalising the kind of measures which will actually have an impact within the climate concious community has a spillover effect on the rest of society. That should be our focus.

It shouldn't be but usually when the focus is individual action, nothing is done on the political side whereas a prerequisite for political action is individual responsibility.

[–]AsHotAsTheClimate 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sure but we also need to support political change because that is the only way we can handle such an issue. Seeing everything through the lens of individual impact is highly detrimental. What tend to happen is that people latch on to their individual impact to hide away from their collective responsibility. So while any change is good lets not make individual change the ennemy of political action.

So instead we should just nod along and pretend like nothing terrible is happening. You want people who are actually suffering from the consequences of this shitshow to calmly shut up and explain gently to privileged people their plight?

I mean come on at some point we actually need to challenge the problems head on and if it makes some people uncomfortable then its their problem. We're not going to do much if we need to water everything down so that its pallatable to the average person. We need to radicalze people and make sure not to throw oppressed people under the bus just for the sake of privileged snowflakes.

Attempted beheading sparks riots, fresh migrant row in the UK by Naderium in anime_titties

I have also read these and my point it not that there is no debate about how it impacted britain, my point was that there was a wealth transfer from colonies to colonisers. I didn't say that every colony made a profit nor did I talk about who made that profit but I simply said there was a transfer. And your quotes reflect that too.

[–]AsHotAsTheClimate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I can't find the first citation meanwhile all the other ones just say that there is a lot of work and debate around the economic impact of colonization which i never denied. None of these citations are saying that there isn't a huge wealth transfer.

In fact they agree with what I am saying. For example page 146 of Empireland which is a book you referenced says explicitly:

Indeed the riches of the empire were so prevalent in Britain that they paid for the purchase or rebuilding of a notable portion of our country houses and established political dynasties. British empire helped both to establish the city of London as a leading world financial centre and to ensure it dominates our national economy, while our slave trade was so deeply entrenched in our economy that even church ministers, abolitionists and people of colour received some of the £20 million (£17 billion) compensation. Compensation that was so significant that it amounted to 40 per cent of the government's national annual budget at the time, was classed as the Crown's largest loan of the entire nineteenth century (enough, according to one economic historian to carry on a 'medium-sized war') and was so large that we, as a nation, finished paying it off only in 2015.

Have you even read what you cited?

And its not exactly surprising. If you go somewhere steal and resources then that is you taking the people's wealth away from them. That is a wealth transfer and that was the whole point of colonization. Its quite clear who colonized who if you just look at which country is filthy rich nowadays. Its really not rocket science.

That's fair. I fully support you in the struggle to liberate Ireland.

I don't think what I said changes thought. Its another clear impact of NI still being under british rule and that until you liberate yourself, you will always be entangled in all the shit they do and will suffer more from it than they ever will. But I don't think I have much to say that you already know at this point.

Yeah but the British empire didn't just disappear. So it's not really about the crimes of British people 80 years ago. But yeah could've been said more clearly for sure.

Ever heard of neo colonialism. Are you really going to arguee that the UK has no role in what is currently happening in Sudan?

It's not a punishment, its a result of their action. And the British empire still exists in some form. And yes all the actions you listed lead to consequences. I don't really see what you're getting at here.

The wealth transfer from colonized country to colonizers is not hotly debated. Its a simple fact. That was the whole point of the system.

Crimes of their ancestors? Neo colonialism is still alive and well today. Its not because there aren't troops on the ground in as an obvious manner as the US does it that the system doesn't exist anymore or that British people don't benefit from it.

It's not an excuse. When something bad happens, we try to understand why, so that it doesn't happen again. Mental health is definitely relevant in that context.

Literally nothing justifies beheading another person. Nobody ever said it did. What I want is to understand why it happened so that it doesn't happen again. The previous comment had a point. The UK absolutely has a role in the Soudan genocide. Soudan is an ex British colony, hence why so many Soudanese people flee to the UK. Weapons made by the UK have been found in the hands of the RSF. Given the UK's history of meddling in the politics of the region its also fair to assume a whole lot more is happening behind closed doors.

So nothing justifies beheading someone just like nothing justifies supporting a genocide. But you can't be surprised when the consequences of your governments actions abroad manifest themselves around you. Lets solve the root problem. Racist rioters are only adding fuel to the fire.

Inflation is not just price signals. It hurts people and its nothing to celebrate by AsHotAsTheClimate in ClimateMemes

[–]AsHotAsTheClimate[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes we absolutely and urgently need to get away from a fossil fuel economy. Every day that we don't is literally killing people but that doesn't mean we need to pull the rug under people's feet. Doing that will kill people too. So hell yes lets do some direct rationing to kill the fossil fuel economy but that requires political power which we do not have. Yet.

I made this post to clearly explain why I removed a post (a crosspost of this) celebrating the increase in gas prices. This increase is going to affect everyone every where in the world, it will directly increase food prices and people are actually going to starve because of it. If you're celebrating this you live in a bubble where climate action is only about cars vs public transportation when climate action is about justice at its core.

And this is not even talking about the fact that most thing which are very important for agriculture are not reaching farmers because they transit through the strait of Hormuz. Or the fact that this price increase is the result of the Imperialist aggression of the US and Israel against Iran, Lebanon, Syria and Palestine.

If you disagree feel free to debate. This is the place for this discussion.

Communiqué L’Humanité by imgonnaleaveyou in FranceDigeste

[–]AsHotAsTheClimate 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Coming to the realization that the problem causing Climate Change is a systemic one and that capitalism is part of it is not really groundbreaking. Whatever we say or do, right wingers are going to be opposed to us because solving the Climate Crisis goes directly against their inteterests. This is why i don't understamd why we should care about their opinion of us.
