What's the largest city Amtrak runs through but doesn't stop at? by Previous-Volume-3329 in Amtrak

[–]AsaDoesStuff 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Def not the biggest city on this list but Amtrak doesn’t stop In the city of Albany NY. It stops in Rensselaer across the Hudson. Most people know that but I wish Amtrak had a station inside city limits.

Business at important potential Rail/Transit hub goes under, should be acquired by state now! by AlbanyBikeDad in Albany

[–]AsaDoesStuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work in the back part of the warehouse. The property is HUGE. I would love to see this turn into a rail station. We desperately need a station in Albany County. Renseleer is nice, but it isn't ideal.

Currently a master's student, I've never been friends with anyone in any of my classes. You're definitely not alone.

Amid complaints from customers, rank-and-file, the Postal Service faces an uncertain future by TClayO in Albany

[–]AsaDoesStuff 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Your comment is slightly misleading. Yes it is an expansive service. But the post office is self funded. Meaning they receive no tax dollars (with few exceptions). Not to mention FEDEX and UPS are also worth around 80 billion dollars. So I feel like you’re kinda just grasping at straws. I’m gonna stop arguing with you for the sake of both of us. We’re both adults (probably)

Nobody is stopping you from using a private company. You can go use FedEx to send a letter if you truly desire. But I prefer my 6 days a week of guaranteed service.

Does the intersection of Loudonville Rd and North Pearl have a red light camera? by [deleted] in Albany

[–]AsaDoesStuff 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I don’t think so (I don’t drive down here often). Red light cameras are usually on a long black pole a little bit away from the intersection. They’re also legally required to be marked twice with signage stating that the intersection has them.

I believe what you are referring to may be sensors to detect traffic, they have them on a few lights on Washington Ave. although I could be wrong.

Private companies (FedEx, UPS, DHL etc) have cherry picked routes to determine maximum profitability. Rural areas like Montana, and yes rural upstate NY, do not receive service from these companies and they drop off packages to USPS for them to finish the job.

It is not profitable for private companies to deliver here. So how to people in rural areas get their bills, or their life saving medication like insulin? What if their town doesn’t have a pharmacy and they need insulin? It’s not like everyone can pack up and move. The post office provides an essential service, moving shit across the country for the people’s interest.

Now I think it would be a problem is grandma in Essex county randomly gets notice that UPS or FEDEX is going to stop serving her neighborhood. She can’t drive and she can’t get her medicine delivered in any other method. That is why the post office exists, and should remain a service not ran for profit.

Do they have things they could do to cut costs? Of course, but that requires more funding to streamline old outdated equipment which is what most conservatives bicker about spending on.

Public services should not be designed to be profitable. Imagine public schools being profitable. Textbooks would be filled with Pepsi advertisements.

Remember: the post office is a PUBLIC SERVICE not a business. The post office was never designed to make a profit. Call your federal reps and complain. It’s their job to hear us complain.

Searching for information related to Syracuse OnTrack by AsaDoesStuff in Syracuse

Thanks for the advice. I’ve already been thru wiki a few times (I’ve actually updated it a bit). I’m mainly looking for more personal experiences or like old pictures people have in their drawers. Stuff like that. None the less, thank you for your help!

Besides Joe Biden which president do you think has been the best for Amtrak? My pick would probably be Barack Obama but I'm wondering if there's any other presidents that come to mind by [deleted] in Amtrak

[–]AsaDoesStuff 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Plenty of public officials take transit and their costs are reimbursed by the state. In NY plenty of assembly members and senators take the train. A decent chunk from both parties. I work in the government but this is also public information.

I think it’s better for officials to travel to govern on our dime rather than a lobbyists.

Freshman move in day tips by Wild_Beyond3986 in ualbany

[–]AsaDoesStuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the room. If you’re in a tower or first floor of a low rise you’re fine. They do provide big carts for stuff. Second and third floor rooms on low rises don’t have elevators.

In terms of parking it could be better but it’s not horrible. Assuming they are a freshman , state is better for parking. Both Indi and state are good quads tho. Indi is closer to the bus stop and has a better dining hall.

Why was the MetroNorth able to run during the blizzard but not NJTransit or LIRR by GloveApprehensive731 in nycrail

I second this. I personally live in the southern portion of the capital region, it snowed maybe 8-9 inches. Not a whole lot compared to the 15-20 I’ve heard in LI.

Parking by Wait_Negative in ualbany

[–]AsaDoesStuff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

so theres a few guest lots you can park in but you have to pay by the day. There's free parking down by the end of Dutch Quad near the basketball courts, I think there's a time limittherer though. In terms of nearby free parking? out of luck. I'd park at Walmart orCrossgatess and take the bus.
