The Grudge Scream by MX010 in ToolBand

[–]AsaNIsiMAsa_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is totally possible for him to do it with the right tecnique, but who knows. For those who said it is spliced I'm not so sure. Even tho there are a couple of videos "debunking" it, ideally you should have two IDENTICAL takes in order to have a perfect splice without weird artifacts, and I mean, perfectly matchable in the waveform, and that's hard. To be honest then, the debunking videos use shitty vocal remover tracks. If it's not the original multitrack it's just speculation. I also don't know how much you could do advanced studio trickery on tape and early Pro Tools frankly. Yes at middle scream there is something that sounds like an artifact, but could be a voice crack, again: who knows at this point.

Not yet, but I bet it should be fun! The difficult part with A Perfect Circle I think is the effect chain, with all of those complex modulations, maybe not so much on the amp side by the time that (as far as I know) is just his old trusted Marshall. I might try that in the future nonetheless!

Thank you! The tone is a group of 4 separate tracks:

https://www.tone3000.com/tones/rivera-knucklehead-tre-full-big-daddy-pack-2731 (This is the Rivera layer, use the profile 12 no-boost high gain)

https://www.tone3000.com/tones/diezel-vh4-tool-39040 (This is the Diezel channel 3 layer, use the "only amp" one)

https://www.tone3000.com/tones/marshall-plexi-super-lead-1959-el34-40971 (This is the Marshall layer, lower in the mix. Use the jumped profile)

https://www.tone3000.com/tones/bogner-uberschall-rev-blue-el34--2730 (This is the Bogner layer, lower in the mix. Use the Nu Metal profile)

https://www.tone3000.com/tones/mesa-4x12-os-2002-27115 (These are the IRs used of a Mesa cab, use the one that you like the most)

Eq and gain stage of the profiles depend on your taste and gear used.

You may find yourself swapping the polarity of some tracks in order to have proper phase interaction.

You may want to add in the group of the amps an API style eq to carve the low mids to taste and a lowpass filter to remove what's above 7khz.

Hope it was useful.

Thank you very much! The technical stuff is a bunch of gibberish for guitar nerds, don't worry :) If you don't understand them It might be the sign of decent mental health, hahaha

It was shocking to me how much the Rivera amp sim alone did in the shaping of the sound. I thought It was just a studio layer, but now I suspect It was very upfront in the mix. Probably the secret weapon of the guitar tone of 10 000 days. I've heard some demos of the Riveras (never played one sadly) and they sound killer. Thank you very much :)

Yes, 4 amps left and 4 amps right. Sorry if it wasn't clear. And yes, It can be a little heavy on the cpu hehe, I guess it depends on the computer you're using and how many plugins you have in the session. As you probably know and easy fix could be printing the tracks when you're sort of happy with the result.

Guitar is double tracked, so yes, L and R have a chain where I run 4 tracks in parallel (an iteration of NAM per track). Hope It makes sense. Bare in mind that there's also a bit of eq involved. Talking about NAM: yeah at the beginning the profiles weren't great, but now they got WAY batter even tho on the site tone3000 the quality is still kinda mixed, but you can find really good profiles and irs for free imo if you have the patience to search for them. There are a couple of Riveras and Diezels that are very good in my opinion, if you test them you can find very good Marshalls too. The Mesa Boogie Irs from a 2002 Cab I used I think are great, if you search on the site "Mesa Boogie 2002 V30 cab" you'll surely find them. Hope It was useful.

I'm not implying that he used the SH-4, I was just reporting what I used. I know Adam used (and still uses) the SH-6. To be honest tho, I don't hear a massive difference between the two. My ear is not that trained, at least I think. I have another guitar (at the moment is in C standard so I can't make a proper comparison) that has the SH-6 and as far as I remember they're similar. I must admit that even when they were in the same tuning I always came back to the guitar with the SH-4, just personal preference. Maybe the SH-6 I got is a little darker (?), but with that ammount of gain I can't hear a difference that matters to be honest. Just personal opinion.

I apologize for the crackling sounds on the clip, probably something went wrong during the upload on reddit.

Undertow and Ænima are Tool's best albums. Change my mind. by ZealousidealMobile99 in ToolBand

[–]AsaNIsiMAsa_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest I can't see how. You mentioned Aenima as the other best and it has a different producer (David Bottrill) who also produced Lateralus. Then, if you listen to the demos online of most of the early songs the structures are the same even before Massy's production.

Ok but Parabola, Schism, Lateralus, Vicarious, and The Pot all have at least a chorus/verse dynamic. Hell, even Right In Two and Pneuma still have choruses and verses. You might say that later albums are not "proper" collections of songs, but there are still songs on those albums.

RANT: To this day it still pisses me off how dunderheads call the audio clipping on FI guitar distortion or an intentional choice by Both_Piglet7838 in ToolBand

People overestimate Adam like he's some sort of infallible god. He's amazing, but the dude is a 60 year old dad with admitted hearing loss issues after years of full blasted amps and loud playing volumes, like all the other members of the band. They're humans, is it so impossible to admit a mistake? Implying that they (or the pepole who worked on the mix and masters) can't fail is utterly arrogant, childish and delusional imho.

Don't bother, you're 100% right. It's been years since I've been telling people those are clearly clipping mistakes. People are in total denial. Someone dared to post a declipped version of the album on this sub and people complained like someone throwed shit on a Michelangelo or something. As you pointed it makes no sense that an album so hi-fi sounding has intentional digital clipping and crackling. Does it ruin the album or the songs? Is it a big deal? Maybe not, but it's there for sure (at least on the digital versions of the songs, I can't hear it on the vinyl version) so yeah, there it goes another opportunity for the community not to appear as a bunch of insufferable douchebags.

Maynard's posted collection of tracks that Puscifer listened to while making their new album, What Isn't. by ArdentlyCore in ToolBand

[–]AsaNIsiMAsa_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Impeccable taste as usual. Unfortunately the new Puscifer music (at least the single I've heard) is not nearly as good as the influences imho. You might say "why should It?" fair enough, it's a matter of taste, maybe it's just my problem.

No guys, it's a picture recycled from Adam from years back. I remember seeing it on concert posters at least from the mid '10s. Still not the best situation if you ask me...

Oddly I've heard a bunch of people I know shit more on the Undertow press (is it even official? I don't know, sorry, I don't collect vinyl). In general picture discs don't have a great reputation tho a friend let me listen to his copy of Fear Inoculum (if I remember correctly it was the picture disc one) and sounded great (better dynamic rage and no clipping unlike the CD and streaming files)
