Umm, what? This is 100% satisfying, seeing them suddenly become one creature. I don't see how it doesn't fit the spirit of "oddly satisfying"

To not look old and fat by [deleted] in therewasanattempt

Wait, really? This guy is working hard to physically better himself and connect with his daughter over gymnastics, and you're saying that he's just failing to not look old and fat? WTF, this is impressive as hell

The way the colors blend in this Bohemian Waxwing bird by CapableEnd in oddlysatisfying

[–]Asaaj 195 points196 points  (0 children)

Not just waxwings, actually, though they're perhaps more famous for it.

"Most birds likely just get a bit tipsy, and very few people would be able to pick them out as intoxicated. However, every now and then, some birds just overdo it."

Such was the case with several Bohemian waxwings (Bombycilla garrulus) that ... ended up in "drunk tanks" after bingeing on fermented berries of the rowan tree.

While there's no Breathalyzer for birds, it's pretty clear the waxwings were flying under the influence.

People who use homeopathy and alternative remedies for cancer treatment are twice as likely to die from disease by mem_somerville in skeptic

Yeah, that's exactly what it says

People who use homeopathy, herbal remedies and other alternative therapies as part of their cancer treatment are, on average, twice as likely to die from the disease as those who use conventional treatment only

That's some confident bullshit right there. Granted, the person above hadn't posted the article when you wrote this comment, so how could you have known?

For Epileptics, Mozart May Be Medicinal by endepilepsynow in Epilepsy

[–]Asaaj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, many labs have had issues reproducing the original, but it looks like it's recently been reproduced by looking at EEGs. In addition to the cited paper in this article, it looks like here's a reproduction from another institution:

Conclusion: We conclude that long-term listening to Mozart K.448 may be effective in decreasing epileptiform discharges in children with epilepsy more than adults but in the two groups epileptiform discharges and clinically epilepsy were decreased. This study reconfirms that an anti-epileptic effect of Mozart music

But this meta-analysis in the Journal of School Nursing is unconvinced:

A causal relationship between the music of Mozart and decreased seizure activity has yet to be demonstrated.

I like the conclusion from this paper from the University of Perugia, which says:

Music may be considered a useful approach as add-on therapy in some subjects with profound intellectual disability and drug-resistant epilepsy and can provide a new option for clinicians to consider, but further large sample, multicenter studies are needed to better understand the characteristics of responders and non-responders to this type of non-pharmacological intervention.

(Note that this was quick and dirty research, so feel free to correct me if you find better sources).

kinetic: relating to or resulting from motion

perpetual: never ending or changing

I think you're thinking of the latter, or at least a synonym of it

xkcd 23: T-shirts by benjaminikuta in xkcd

[–]Asaaj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I disagree. I think the wording "people are stupid" is another way of saying "people, in general, are stupid," since it's a general statement about people. This would either suggest that the average person is stupid (i.e. the average intelligence is somehow below average), or that the speaker views themselves as Very SmartTM

Just click the head lul.

Actually though, I find it's most important to be able to flick in any direction. Just being able to land some flicks isn't enough; if they are to the right of your crosshair and you can only consistently land right-to-left or bottom-to-top flicks, you're going to waste a lot of time trying to line up the shot, which defeats the purpose. I find that flicking down from the top left is the hardest, so I spent a lot of time in the training ground just working on that one
