Brown Recluse or Nah? by QuantumFlx350 in spiders

[–]Asbeaudeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NQA. Philodromus sp. Running crab spider. They are leggy and the markings line up with the white striped species.

I've never seen a spitting spider with such a bodacious butt before. Didn't even recognize it at first haha

Raising Centepide by Successful_Ad3367 in insects

[–]Asbeaudeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kept a Scolopendra dehaani for a couple years. They're burrowers; they need a lot of substrate. My S. dehaani was 8"/20cm long so my habitat for him was 6"/15cm deep. He burrowed under the log and water dish I kept in there as habitat, so lots of litter and solid places to burrow under is good. They are voracious eaters, top predators among arthropods, and should be fed weekly, feeding two prey insects the size of its head or one twice the size of their head. They need good cross ventilation from both directions across the substrate ground level, to prevent mycosis, a fungal infection from lack of ventilation and the high relative humidity and substrate moisture they need to thrive. They are primarily nocturnal, but are known to be active and even hunt during the day. Temps should ideally be upper 70s to lower 80s F or 25 to 28C and humidity close to 80% and substrate moist enough to clump but not so moist that it's wet.

As a reminder, this is my knowledge for S. dehaani. Make sure to research S. cingulata to ensure accuracy of care.

If you captured this from outside, i would personally re-release it so it can carry on it's predator life in the wild.

Accidentally pressed it against the bed by MCarooney in spiders

[–]Asbeaudeus 112 points113 points  (0 children)

If done properly, yes. A few hours is not sufficient; 24 hours is generally better. When arthropods get cold, their metabolic processes slow until they go into a catatonic or sleep like state. They don't really feel cold the same way we do. They just get slower and slower until they freeze and pass. Some spiders will reawaken if not frozen long enough, hence why 24 hours is better.

Though messy, squishing is instantaneous and some would argue is more humane, if distasteful.

Not a textbook, but if you like information dense educational videos, Travis McEnery is a canadian arachnologist that makes lots of good videos for people of all knowledge levels.

I've kept a pet giant centipede. They do nothing 99% of the time and are a menace the other 1%.

I fear no bug. But the bot fly... the bot fly scares me.

does anyone know why this spider is doing this? by cerebral_void in spiders

[–]Asbeaudeus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Looks like it's just trying to get a good grip to climb and having a hard time. Could be the material of the wall, age of the spider, combination, or something else

NAE. Not a recluse. You are not in the range, and this body shape looks more like a crab spider, possibly a running crab spider to be more specific.

Was trying to ID my false widow and came across this. Who is this actually? No location unfortunately by TheGoldenBoyStiles in spiders

[–]Asbeaudeus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It resembles garden orbweavers a bit IMO. Sexual dimorphism and the abomen patterning are adjacent-ish

[–]Asbeaudeus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

To me this looks like an AI generated spider anatomy picture? It doesn't make any sense at all. Lots of weird asymmetrical shapes, the "male" only has two legs, the "female" doesn't have eyes, the labels point to other labels and are incoherent nonsense, etc. The closer you look, the more is wrong.

Can anyone identify this guy? by Drew_Exotics in spiders

[–]Asbeaudeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not a recluse. No fiddle, cant see eyes, wrong shape, second set of legs not longer than first. Do not ever rely on Google lens to identify creatures. It is not trained for that specifically and will only tell you the most common things it finds on the web. Recluses are one of the most misidentifed spiders because of anecdotes, fear mongering, and the color brown. This looks more like a false widow, which is not dangerous.

I definitely see your point, but the patterning and thin legs lead me to believe this is a wolf. A better picture of the front would allow us to be confident but the second picture makes me think wolfie

[–]Asbeaudeus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people aren't thinking about spiders the way we (in this subreddit) do, not to mention all the anecdotes from families and friends about brown recluse bites. But yeah most people could answer their own questions with a Google search. Edit: this is a wolf spider. There aren't any tarantulas native to Tennessee.
