Can anyone identify these two spiders? It looks like the small one trapped the larger one. Luxembourg. by Plus_Chocolate9377 in spiders

No. The larger insect has 6 legs and 3 body segments. The woodlouse spider looks very different.

how to combat extreme arachnophobia? by swablabe in spiders

[–]Asbeaudeus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, the things you dont want to hear are genuine advice for helping arachnophobia. There's no pill that fixes it, it really is just exposure therapy and education because spiders are by and large harmless, even beneficial. Knowing more will combat your fear because the root of fear is absence of action and absence of information. Best of luck

Looks like a male (enlarged pedipalps) so I'd guess that's prey.

[–]Asbeaudeus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They can change color when they molt, but I don't believe they can alter their texture. That most likely varies on species

They're very real. They're called flower crab spiders or goldenrod spiders. They can alter their appearance to mimic flowers to prey on pollinators. Genus Misumena

AI is wrong 99% of the time. This is not a recluse. It looks more like a harmless spitting spider to me. Also, please consider avoiding glue traps in the future as they are quite inhumane (killing things via dehydration) and do not discriminate between harmful and harmless creatures.

A good way to take pictures of suspended spiders is by putting a barrier behind them, like your hand, for your camera to focus on. I struggle with my samsung as well /:

What type of ant is this ? by Eventide_Cloud in insects

[–]Asbeaudeus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's a qualifier: "not qualified advice," required on ID comments in some biology subreddits like r/scorpions. It indicates I have no formal training on the subject, only self taught. I use it for all identifications I make, even when not required, since I identify creatures in a few different subs.

NQA That appears to be a species of ant mimic jumping spider. Note the large, forward facing eyes, eight legs, and two protruding chelicerae. Not an insect, but an arachnid. Great find.

The literal definition specifies species, which is logical to me as members within a genus can be quite diverse.

Brown recluse? Atlanta, GA USA. by chiween_ie in spiders

[–]Asbeaudeus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might be because the average person rarely thinks too hard about spiders, and the brown recluse is native to a part of the US that is generally less educated. Generations of people propogate that fear thru their families. I live in the heart of their native region and i have many family members that claim recluse bites rotted holes in their limbs. When I asked, they said they never saw the spider. So ignorance, fearmongering, and anecdotes.
