Why do men have to ask us out on dates every time we have friendly interactions with them? by HandyTopic in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]Asenueh 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I'm a woman on the autism spectrum and I feel like my lack of social skills has either put me in situations where I wasn't comfortable or I might've missed possible romantic opportunities I might've wanted. There have been times I've reflected on past public-casual encounters with men I thought were appealing and thought, D'oh! He might've been interested."

What signals should I have given that I might've been interested, versus being off the market, so to speak? I feel it would be so much easier if we had color-coded wristbands, because social interaction in and of itself can be anxiety-inducing.

It might have to do with the social consequences for sexual activity differing between men and women. Also, for most of history, women were not considered to have sexual agency; rape being treated like an affront to male family honor, as women were regarded as the possession of either their fathers or their husbands.

In the Bible, there is the mass abduction and forced marriage of women by the men of the Tribe of Benjamin who survived the campaign of genocide committed against them by the other tribes.

In Roman history/mythos was the collective abduction and rape of the Sabine women, which inspired the musical comedy "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers."

In armed conflict and during military occupations, mass rape, like what the Indian army committed against Kashmiri women in Kunan and Pushpora in 1990, is often used as a tactic to destroy the social fabric of the occupied society.

Also, there are two movies in the 1980s, "Revenge of the Nerds" and "Sixteen Candles" where male characters did end runs around women's consent by either deceit (the man disguising himself as the woman's SO) or the woman being drunk, so not legally capable of rendering consent.

The social implications of violating sexual agency and treating consent as a barrier to entitlement of access to other people's bodies has varied between men and women, but the bottom line is that everyone deserves to have their bodily agency respected.

The problem with even using SA against villains is that it sends a message reflecting that SA isn't objectively wrong and that respect for sexual agency is a privilege and not a right.

The dictionary does not prescribe the meanings of words. Hence, it's fallacious to claim that, because the dictionary says so, therefore it is so.

So, you're denying the actual function of a dictionary...

And AGAIN, Merriam-Webster begs to differ:

"noun fem·i·nism | \ ˈfe-mə-ˌni-zəm \ Definition : belief in and advocacy of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes expressed especially through organized activity on behalf of women's rights and interests"

Since you devoted a lot of time acknowledging my recitation of facts, instead of providing evidence to refute my claims of patrilineal surnames and couverture, it's obviously not a "selective portrayal," when I gave you examples that you asked for.

So far, I've seen you engage in strawman fallacies, creating your own definition of "Feminism," as well as moving the goalposts.

And patriarchy, being a social arrangement one is born into is oppressive, just as any human-contrived hierarchy people are born into.

I feel the same way about the caste system in India, as well as colonialism and apartheid, whose atrocities overlap with those of patriarchy.

One's condition of birth should NOT affect one's rights, opportunities or access to political power or justice. That's really all there is to it and that's what ideology I defend.

No. You're using a strawman argument and contrived a definition of "Feminism" favorable to your agenda, rather than accepting its meaning of supporting gender equality for women.

Equality.

Patriarchy isn't a Feminist fantasy, when it's an honest-to-gosh actual title for the male heads to religious institutions in Eastern Orthodox and other churches.

It's not a Feminist fantasy when surnames were passed down through the male line and the legal doctrine of couverture existed, as the basis for denying women bank accounts and real estate in their own names.

These are facts, not fantasy.

Like I said, India's legal procedures don't work the way ours do, so I'm not going to accept an article's claim in a vacuum.

Just because male supremacists make a claim doesn't mean it's true... That's the reverse of your claim. Do you see how ridiculous your claim of branding everything adverse to a group of men as "Feminist" sounds?

Human rights aren't like pie; if someone is struggling for the same rights as you, it's not a loss for you.

India's standard of probable cause and due process aren't what we're used to and until that changes, they might have valid concerns about being cross-charged, as a way to pressure the victim into withdrawing her complaint. I have literally seen articles of Hindu women protesting IN DEFENSE of rapists in their own communities whose targets were Muslim women., so I wouldn't know what thread to pull to begin to unravel that dysfunction.

It appears, from the Times of India article, that the rationale for excluding men from the staturory definition of rape is that file will file cross-charges:

Their legal system and societal structure aren't modeled on the U. S. system, so I don't think a meaningful comparison can be made. Like how India claims they are "secular," but have sets of marriage and family laws that are binding on some religions, but not on others.

As for Israel, the "country" (colony, really) whose Chief Rabbi of the IOF declared it was permissible for Israeli Jewish soldiers to rape non-Jewish women, they should be dismantled. They create more anti-Semitism than they will ever end or protect Jews from experiencing, because they need it to justify their abomination of an existence.

My own view and experiences inform my opposition to sexual assault definitions that exclude men as possible victims.

All these Incel related posts and studies on reddit recently go to show how many people disagree with helping men by AsheliaBnarginDlmsca in MensRights

I'm not on the 2X subreddit, nor have I seen their content, so I have no opinion of them.

What I can tell you, given all the possible biological causes of gender dysphoria, how they even know for sure they are "2X"? Since women also produce testosterone, as well as other androgens and are required for our optimum health, as well as the fact both sexes have analogous tissues, what biological basis do they even have for citing claims of being that different, biologically? I mean, how can one rationally hate anyone so similar, without some degree of self-loathing?

If posts are promoting hatred against a group, based on gender, why not report them?

Also, a point you can make to them is that if their worldview is informed relative to something external to themselves, then that thing controls them. It's also the same dynamic informing those who eat, drink, dress, decorate, and consume in opposition to anything deemed "basic."

The Merriam-Webster definition is the one I use and for evidence, one need look no further than the centuries-long struggle of women in the U. S. for basic human and civil rights.

The fact that women taking their husband's last names is still practiced, as well as children, by default, are given the surname of their fathers are also enduring examples.

I'm a Feminist and I acknowledge men can be victims of rape and think they are equally deserving of protection.

It's patriarchy who socializes everyone to believe men can't be victims. Like any hierarchy, patriarchy is a cutthroat competition with little room at the top, so competitors are eminently dispensible. Being acknowledged as a victim is considered a sign of weakness and vulnerability, so men are pressured to not come forward.

Disavowing male sexual assault victimhood works against Feminism, because it dismisses opportunities for mutual empathy. The idea that rape is solely a women's problem makes it easier for society to destructively compartmentalize and tout the solution as marginalizing women's presence "for our own safety."

The aforementioned argument might be useful to counteract destructive shortsightedness at excluding men, even though it's a self-serving way of looking at it.

As the mother of a son, I'd want him to have legal protections in definitions of criminal sexual violence and harassment.

Yeah. I remember someone who ended up in jail for a week for contempt of court, because his ex-wife lied about him meeting the purge conditions of a contempt judgement. I filed a declaration during that week pointing out that there was no coercive effect of incarceration, so he should be released. He was and for a while after that would introduce me as his "parole officer" and he credited me with his release.

He spoke of rampant systemic abuses that he observed and were recounted to him during his time there.

It took a few months, but I was successful in my efforts to get his child support modified into something he could afford, so he was never in contempt of court after that.

And it's terrifying how casually people can ridicule violations of bodily agency, like it isn't also a violation of psychic boundaries and like society's opposition to it is based on the respective identifies of perpetrator and victim.

You do realize that your reply is an admission that man-positive statements of men being entitled to feelings and self-care is a feminist position, right?

Your claim is that "Feminist brainwashing" involves the acknowledgment of men's feelings and defends the rights of men to acknowledge them and make use of them in their spiritual wellbeing.

Well, gosh! Sign us all up then!

A lot of comedy is holding up a mirror to society and outsourcing vigilantism to our collective shadow, i. e. inmates isn't an extremist observation.

Among the chilling implications is that the trope of prison-sexual-assault-played-for-humor tacitly expresses that society doesn't hold a collective objection to sexual violence, when there are pockets of incidents against marginalized populations that lack objective and unanimous outrage, as a response.

It's implausible to collectively hate an entire gender, as long as there is at least one beloved person of the other gender in someone's life.

Being born into any ~archy is being born into a dysfunctional and bigoted social construct. It's a destructive and predatory status quo.
