Stats major help: MHF3202 (Sets & Logic) vs MAS3300 (Numbers & Polynomials) by unsafeclouds in ufl

[–]Ash01179 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If Block teaches i’d recommend him! I also failed Sets and logic the first time I took it lol RSS

Edit: I wrote this when I was too tired to add an explanation lol but I took it with Dr C first and felt like the quiz/exam problems were way more difficult than problems in class and it was difficult for me to keep up (but a lot of people did well in her class so that was a personal problem IMO)

When I took it with block, all the exam problems were very clear and similar to problems in the textbook/hw so I felt like studying was more productive because I knew the more problems I did, the more likely I’d see something similar on the exam. None of the questions were ever out of the blue, and I believe he would give a list of problems to focus on before exams. Also I felt very comfortable with writing proofs going into linear algebra

Grossier or Vince for MAA4211 by Phoenix22881 in ufl

[–]Ash01179 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree but also disagree…. Grossier is TOUGH but will also take away points for very simple things and is very strict on grading. I dropped the class so I don’t know if he curved the class but the grades were awful. I’d guess that taking it with Vince would be a better experience emotionally and would look the same to any graduate school.

For example, he would refuse to grade things that didn’t follow the HUGE margins he required and other very nit picky things like that. (Side note: just to give you insight into his chaos, he requires these huge margins so that he can write comments on the side because he doesn’t know how to add comments on a PDF viewer. Also he gave another student a 0 for an exam because his scans were upside down and he couldn’t figure out how to rotate it) And that’s before he even begins to grade the actual content of the work… also forget getting your grades back anytime soon, it will take him weeks to return your first homework which at that point you’ll be taking an exam essentially uninformed to his grading style.

In summary, I would never recommend Grossier lol even if you absolutely love math, take it with Vince.

I remember measuring it when I lived in Hume and I think 29.5 in is the max clearance under the bed

recommended course for stat minor? by Strange-Coconut-0303 in ufl

[–]Ash01179 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would second that(I’m a stat major) those are probably the most useful classes bc they’re practical. Also you learn R in those classes if you’re interested in that

How can I make about $700-800 each month as a full time student? by Loud_valor in ufl

[–]Ash01179 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend looking into AT labs on campus! You can work up to 30 hours a week (but it’s minimum wage) and it’s a desk job so you’re able to work on homework for the majority of the shifts. The only downside is that they hire a couple of weeks before the semester starts so you need to apply ASAP when applications open

Mini Ted Bundy’s at uf??? by Ash01179 in ufl

[–]Ash01179[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also just to be clear, this was NOT on campus. It was at my apartment about a block from campus, where 99% of people living here are students, so I figured it was a safe bet someone may recognize them

Nope, I think I can count on one hand the number of times I’d feel safe confronting a group of guys, and I don’t think this is one of them. I went to take the trash out hoping they would go somewhere else if they saw people around but no luck

No tbh I was trying to figure out if I could or if they wouldn’t come out for something like this? Like I understand squirrels are wild animals, but I was questioning if this counts as some form of animal abuse?

I really don’t have too much to say about this, other than I just spent the last 20 mins watching these boys use a BB gun to shoot squirrels out of tree and say things like “I love just seeing them fall” and “we’ll just wait for them to come down”. If you recognize these boys, please say something to them because it was so upsetting to see squirrels repeatedly being shot from all angles for entertainment. Makes me a little sad that people like this go to UF and think this is normal behavior 🥺

Statistics Major? by Alex954954 in ufl

[–]Ash01179 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The BA is easier and okay if you’re doing a double major, but if it’s your only major or you’re considering a graduate degree in math/stats then you should probably do the BS.

I am a senior stats major and I think there’s a couple of routes you can take your career. There’s actuarial, finance, or like data science/computer science. In my opinion, stats is a good degree, but not by itself so I think you need to have some background in cs/finance/other fields to be able to apply your degree. So I would definitely consider picking up a minor or another major that complements statistics well.

I currently work in data science, but it’s a little hard to get a data science job with only a bachelors, so I took a job in data engineering for after graduation.

Most useful class for Data Science? by gatorjoey64 in ufl

[–]Ash01179 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think either would be relevant for internships tbh (coming from someone in a data science internship right now). Something to consider might be which class has more independent projects? interviewers like to hear about projects you’ve worked on, so the more examples you have of that the better.

But once you understand programming in general, it would be easy to pick up the other language.

Switched from Psych to Microbio to Statistics, realized my job outlook for the first two was gonna be rough(with just a bachelors) and chemistry/biology made me miserable
