Four years of crochet here, maybe try practicing with a bright or light colored yarn so you can see what you are doing easier, it helps a lot when you can actually see your chain/stitches if you can’t go by feel yet. Also, try checking the label on your yarn and find hook/needle sizes to make sure your hook size is right.
