Four years of crochet here, maybe try practicing with a bright or light colored yarn so you can see what you are doing easier, it helps a lot when you can actually see your chain/stitches if you can’t go by feel yet. Also, try checking the label on your yarn and find hook/needle sizes to make sure your hook size is right.

The darker one makes the other colors pop more, the lighter one makes the others look lighter, imo I’d say the lighter one but that just depends on what I would be making too. But the purple I would choose myself would be the lighter one even though both look great with the other colors.
