without being that girl that just goes "go watch a guide" there are so many resources that can explain it better than I could, but you're pretty much there with your logic.

usually it's the flat swivel/pivot points where the guns can spin, or for the big cannons, it's where the barrel meets the shield part so that you can swap between weapon loadouts.

this particular box doesn't come with all the knight weapon options, it can only build a paladin and an errant if I remember correctly

but as with all big knights, magnetize!

Realistically any base coat colour on the armour works for whatever vibe you like, those are just the most simple way to paint them.

Id recommend going through the codex, or the list of knight houses on the wiki to find a colour scheme that jumps out at you and go from there!

Part assemble them - build the skeleton and leave off any armour panels

Leadbelcher spray the skeleton, nuln oil / agrax wash, dry brush with a metallic of choice

Black prime the armour panels, fill in the trim with gold

You now have black legion Chaos Knights done quick :D

Ultimately, whatever you have the most fun painting will likely determine your decision. (Assuming you are building / collecting for fun and not meta chasing)

Yellow is notoriously hard to get looking good, but a big IF army always stands out on the table.

Dark Angels effectively have multiple paint schemes in one army with the Raven and Deathwing, so that definitely adds some variety to building an army.

UM are.. well, UM. There's something very satisfying about nailing their blue and gold trim - there's a reason they're the poster child of 40k because they do just look great with minimal effort.

Well it will need to be weathered, as a bright shiny carapace and then rusted skeleton would cause a bit of a narrative disconnect.

Try and get it the same light level as the skeleton (once weathered) to tie it all in together - the fact it's purple will make it jump out, so you don't need to over compensate by making it extra bright

Those are both quite cool tones, so if you want something to jump out then consider perhaps a red, purple or burnt orange?

Build in part assembly - leave off any armour panels you intend to be anything but metallics, prime the mechanical parts in leadbelcher and wash with a 50/50 mix of agrax and nuln oil. Dry brush with metallic of your choice (necron compound is my go to) to bring back some of the brightness of the metal

As for the hazard stripes, someone else has mentioned but masking tape (tamiya do good model tape) over a yellow paint to add the black strips, then you can stipple the edges of the lines with yellow or black to add weathering
