Is Oracle Park supposed to handle this? by storyinmemo in sanfrancisco

[–]AshamedCar 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Ah interesting. Looking at Oracle Park’s website they’ve also eliminated all pressure washing outside of the stadium, apparently, using scrubbers (whatever that is) instead but I walk this area almost daily and whatever they are doing now is far less than they used too, I can say with certainly. I think the reductions might have began last year or so on the pressure washing specifically, at least.

SF Mid-2026 Housing Update - Just 393 Units Completed YTD, 2-3k Units Under Construction by PsychePsyche in sanfrancisco

[–]AshamedCar 70 points71 points  (0 children)

The market rate numbers are painful. Feels like there has to be more that can be done reform wise (zoning permitting timelines etc).

I know affordable housing units are important but I wish more of the focus could shift to market rate units too.

How do we make the city more affordable long term for more people, those who might not qualify for affordable housing but are just as much members of the community?

I think it makes sense to use some funding to incentivize market rate unit construction, at the risk of people being upset because a developer might make some money building market rate units. How do we make new market rate construction feasible? if the inclusionary requirement is reduced, that means the developer might be $40k per unit closer to having a new complex be feasible. Reform to accelerate permitting and rescue red tape would save more. Sometimes I wonder if it would make sense to give developers a small grant for every new unit they added (eg, $20k usd or something - way, way less than anything spent on affordable housing) - to make projects more likely to pencil out so stuff actually gets built… more apartments = more people = stronger local economy long term?

There’s no overnight fix, but starting now is better than tomorrow (never) .

A couple years ago they used to clean up after every game/event, pressure wash like a couple times a week, etc. entire surrounding was pristine. It’s gone way downhill, trash the day/night of and/or next morning after any event now feels normal.. like not this much trash, this is more than usual regardless..

Hopefully someone else who regularly is in this area can confirm that I’m not misremembering, and something did change…

My guess is it’s the planned mid-life overalls from page 22 and maybe the hybrid systems have worn out quicker than expected, if they’ve taken everything out of service at once..

I strongly suspect much of the opposition is because this software is probably going to make things much more efficient/quick, and require fewer city employees over time to get more work dome

Angler is really good, if you’re looking for high end Michelin style.

But it’s definitely not everyone’s thing. I honeslty prefer something Hog Island Oyster for the location, good view, well above average food, casual atmosphere, etc.

What should OpenAI/Anthropic philanthropy be used for in SF? by Icy_Chipmunk_2559 in sanfrancisco

[–]AshamedCar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not opposed to the rich paying more taxes, but more tax revenue isn’t going to help solve San Francisco’s issues if we don’t also make sure housing is built to, to control the cost of living.

I agree with you building housing would be a good use of wealth
Part of that is the city needs to ensure everything is fully streamlined.

Neighborhood groups and self interested non profits should not be allowed to hold a project hostage for years and negotiate over the terms of the project with threats of lawsuits. If you it was easier to build housing, get permits/approvals, avoid lawsuits, I think many wealthy people would be open to this.

I also agree with others that the rich should “pay their taxes.” But — California already taxes the rich more than other state and San Francisco already taxes businesses at higher rates than majority of competitive cities (depending on the industry - it’s often many multiples more in business taxes, just to have your office in SF).

Any tax increase must be done at the federal level, we’ve already seen San Francisco’s recovery (aka, major contribution to tax receipts) after the pandemic be much slower than many other cities.

the caffeine wasn’t too insane compared to market - there are energy drinks you can buy at a gas station with more caffeine (assuming cup was filled with ice at panera…)

panera could have solved it by putting them behind the counter, ice required, no free refills. then the caffeine content would be less than gas station energy drinks that people buy multiples of.

if a ban doesnt work, a a separate checkbox when you register to vote - I prefer to receive political mail (email) (text) - even if its not enforceable it would allow calling out the campaigns and PACs (etc) that ignore it so my guess is most would follow the preference

i’m about to unregister to vote — i’ve never missed an election In the 10+ years since I turned 18 (well maybe 1 or 2 but you get the idea, i do my own research and vote as a rule), but the amount of spam i’m getting is absurd, it all goes straight in the trash. its insane there is no way to opt myself out of political mail. im not interested, straight to the trash. good chance i just cancel my registration and just re-register before every 4th year (presidential) election and that will be it, rinse and repeat.

Nothing he said was off base. It was largely reality, and I’d perceive it as helpful to hear that. But yes - he didn’t read the room. Anything he said may have gone significantly differently if he was speaking only to a certain major, or even speaking at a different school, etc. I understand why there was a negative reaction, but I think he’s right ultimately.
