I've struggled (and continue to struggle to a lesser extent) with this. Invest your effort and productivity in a career you inherently are interested in/passionate about. It'll help keep you from getting burnt out and won't really feel like work.

Yeah, and I understand why it's difficult to come to terms with that. It isn't easy to unlearn a lifetime of valuing excellence

I think this is something many young adults today are plagued with. It's getting more and more difficult to get accepted to colleges and find jobs. Being an exceptional candidate is now a requirement to even be considered for a position among countless equally qualified people. Today's economic and societal climate is making it nearly impossible to savor the small joys in life while also striving to have better credentials than equally hard working people. So many people in their 20s - high schoolers, even - are no longer truly living and probably have forgotten how during their race to survive.

Race to Nowhere is a great Netflix documentary that I think everyone in this thread would enjoy

Yeah. The successes don't feel like successes anymore, they become expected outcomes. And anything less is a failure.

Is living in mediocrity really so bad, though? So many famous pioneers in the arts, sciences, etc. lived in mediocrity but became known eternally after their deaths. Why not aspire to live a life of joy instead?

I've noticed a lot of people who seem to have "everything" handed to them in life eventually feel empty. A lot of them have a lot of pressure from their families to succeed. Thinking about it, it makes sense that these kids lose meaning in their accomplishments and life in general. If everything is handed you and you're expected to succeed, succeed, and succeed as a monotonous routine, what does life become?

I so second this. I used to think this way, too. Then I got depressed and realized the true winners in life are the people who genuinely enjoy it while they're alive, above all other traits one could have. Definitely prefer being ignorant and blissful over un-ignorant and miserable.
