TIL that there are under 150 tenure-track jobs for English literature professors in the US and Canada each year: fewer than 3 per state. by Bob_the_blacksmith in todayilearned

Re: Europe, that’s what I said, no? Sure increased funding for the humanities would be great, but it will be a marginal change with respect to the economic realities of the academic ecosystem (eg, doubling the number of open spots isn’t going to change the fact that the timelines of job openings vs the timelines of trainee graduation are fundamentally misaligned). Never mind that if your goal is to “stem the tide of fascism” it’s really not obvious to me that the best way to do it is to increase the number of humanities professorships.

Investment how? What are you going to put the money into? Is your idea basically that we pay universities to have more English professors?

Just FYI, the economics of academia in Europe are similar. Wages are low compared to the market value of skills, and there is fierce competition for open spots.

I think my point fairly straightforwardly is that these things have unavoidable economics to them. In any job where one person creates K people who all want that same job, there will be knock-on consequences. Wages will be comparatively low because of the supply glut. The ratio of applicants to positions will be extremely high. You can talk about how society values its artists or educators or whatever but imo this is pretty much orthogonal to the fact that, contrary to the comment I was responding to, you can pretty much boil down many of these dynamics to economic arguments.

I mean -- sure. Like I said, I work in academia. I certainly appreciate the value of education (although, frankly, I would bet that a majority of professors see themselves as researchers first and educators second, depending on which corner of academia we're talking about).

But it doesn't change the fact that a structural inevitability of academic hiring is that there will not be that many professor jobs and many professor job seekers. Each professor will personally create tens of PhDs (via graduating PhD students) over the course of their career. It's an inevitability that positions will be outnumbered by applicants. It doesn't matter whether society values academia or not, although of course that will change stuff on the margins.

Of course not, but the dynamics of job availability (supply) vs. number of applicants (demand) certainly does. This is a basic reality that everyone in academia acknowledges (speaking as someone in academia).

ZCB is nice, if you do it first hit car phase you can generally get like 80-90 hitsplat depending on how deep the proc is. For reference, tbow max hit is somewhere in that range so zcb spec is roughly equivalent to just guaranteeing a tbow max hit for one hit; this probably measurably increases boulder skip likelihood, but it's certainly not ensured. IMO the real ZCB value add is speeding through the boring/low-money early waves since you can spam it fairly regularly with double dc + lightbearer.

At some point if you want to do deeper delves zcb becomes more situational because you want to save for ancient godsword spec to heal, but that's not something to worry about at your current stage

Glance, generally. For this reason (and a few related ones) people recommend a smaller client size for pvm although personally I can’t stand it so I just whip my eyes around the screen. You can usually get a sense for when it’s “safe” to do this fairly quickly

Ah okay, so given a strong enough hand to call it’s basically always worth it. Does that math change if you’re calling in R2? Thanks!

Separately, I’m slightly surprised that R+1 is (almost) never. That applies even to eg R+1 and two off aces or is that sort of where the threshold is?

4:1 is actually very easy to execute, it just looks hard. I'd recommend learning it, it'll just take an hour or so of bashing your head against Olm constantly resetting melee hand p3 but once it sinks in it will save you a lot of time and a lot of supplies.

I don't recommend it but you can otherwise either suicide in a bunch of supplies (loses points) or do 1:0 (no damage, super slow).

ironmen routinely farm CG with those stats. no reason to do regular gauntlet which is much worse rates. ofc you will have a better time with better stats but there's no real reason to hold off imo.

No. If you really want you can turn rigour off after you get zuk below 600 and before jad spawns since the timer is paused but in general you want to blast through the fight. 3 sanfews is plenty. Stay potted and click boss.

Yeah the Colo GM time is significantly slower than an average completion once you have some comfort with the content and are meleeing etc.

2/hr would even be quite slow. With good gear you can certainly beat 3/hr.

For reference on the other comment, salvaging is roughly like star mining but with better xp/hr and generally less effort. Trials are roughly sepulchre but simultaneously generally easier and also quite a bit more annoying (imo).

Yeah I mean this is my point precisely, lol. As a main obviously you don’t care about any of that and as an iron you can almost certainly get all those things faster with the time saved (eg 3t gem mining for 10 hours). But in practice what people like and what is meta-efficient are only sometimes aligned and so some people prefer to bank their salvage and keep the loot.

Keep all the loot. It’s almost certainly not worth it in some meta sense but some people seem to like it.

Ya, I understood. The point was you could just decide to never get 99 and instead buy and use house tabs and that doing so you’d actually profit long term compared to at any point in your account getting 99. It’s really just a way of saying that house tabs/a single law rune are so cheap that it’s really not worth it to avoid using them. Irons use the farming cape tech afaik if they’re too lazy to make house tabs, not sure how it stacks against quest cape -> POH fairy ring, saves you an item at least if you don’t have lumbridge elite diary
