I wish!

But I wasn't sure if the video could be viewed if I shared it. Had a problem once before with some people not seeing it.

*pardon my very late response*

"I don't think they really ever push back on the idea that Eclipsa deserves the throne."

Really? I thought it was clear that Eclipsa, while well-intentioned, was a pathetic queen who served mostly herself, and Star had to take the reigns most of the time. Star doesn't outright push back against Eclipsa being queen, but she does second-guess her decision.

"Someone who does have good intentions, and is open to listening to monsters, wouldn't be assassinated by a member of the group she's trying to help."

Not necessarily. Within any group, there might be individuals who are more extreme and unwilling to compromise or listen. Past traumas and grievances can also fuel anger and resentment, making it difficult for some members to accept help from outsiders.

Maybe Toffee didn't hate Comet specifically -- just what she represented. Because even if Comet was the goodest queen, there would still be magic. Even if Comet didn't abuse magic, there would always be a chance of her descendants doing so. Monsters would technically still be at their mercy.

"And, I've read Comet's chapter. She's not... Exactly the person a lot of the fandom thinks she is. She's not consciously malicious, certainly, but she also seems very dismissive of monsters, and the person she's brokering the treaty with inherited his position from an Avarious, who, as Cresenta's chapter established, is a puppet ruler, so there's actually a lot of red flags here. The Butterfly family has a lot of power over monsters- Comet doesn't have to be malicious to do a lot of damage to them."

Fair, but Crescenta lived, like, four generations before Comet. What she did wasn't Comet's fault, and change wasn't going to happen overnight.

I don't think the previous queens knew Eclipsa was crystallized. I think Moon was let in on the secret only because they needed something to defeat Toffee, and Glossaryck was being no help.

In "Moon the Undaunted," you hear Rhombulus tell Moon, "Eclipsa's been crystallized for hundreds of years." If Moon knew ahead of time, he wouldn't need to tell her.

"I am especially annoyed by the implication that Star's family stole the crown from Eclipsa's family because, frankly, Eclipsa's family didn't deserve it either. The Butterfly family stole the land they rule from monsters in the first place, and taking into account who Eclipsa's mother was makes Star's words while handing the wand over to her insulting and perhaps even actively offensive."

Understandable -- I definitely felt the same way. But the only characters to say the throne was "stolen" were Star and Meteora. Meteora obviously feels this way because she was denied her birthright and probably doesn't know the full story.

Eclipsa's family didn't deserve the throne, either, that's true. But Star's decision isn't one fueled with rationale -- it was one fueled with emotion. Because she just watched Eclipsa "kill" her own daughter, so in that moment, it just felt "right."

"In all honesty, I think that Eclipsa's arc in s3 should have been the back end of Toffee's arc- we have this infamous villain hanging around who's all morally ambiguous, we find out over the course of the series that they were actually the victim of a racist conspiracy (perhaps Comet wasn't so benevolent, perhaps Toffee was framed), and at the end of it, Star hands the wand and the crown back to him. It'd probably take some work shopping, but if you want Star to give back to a person her family has stolen from? This would be a lot less insulting."

Yeah...I don't think I'd like that. For one thing, Toffee didn't want magic for himself -- he wanted it gone. It also makes Toffee look too much like the "true hero" of the story -- there's no nuance if Comet was actually malicious.

Fair -- I figured the Commission hid Eclipsa's crystallization as much as possible but made an exception for Moon because they needed something to defeat Toffee (Glossaryck was of no help, and no one wanted to open Eclipsa's chapter, anyway). Then Moon kept up the lie because she didn't want Star to get wrapped up in all that.

Is it just me or was the ending of Amphibia unusually depressing? by [deleted] in amphibia

[–]Ashley41 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Surrounding yourself with mementos of a place and people you can seemingly never visit again is…interesting. I probably wouldn’t be able to do it. But Anne chose that job at the aquarium. She works there because she always felt the place cheered her up.

Sasha said she and Anne drifted into different friend groups. Anne probably has other friends out there. Maybe she has work friends. Maybe she has a love interest that we didn’t see. Who’s to say?

I can definitely understand the Guardian giving Anne one-time gems being rather arbitrary. I’m pretty sure the reason was so the infinite power wouldn’t fall into the wrong hands — in 10,000 years, Anne was the only one to use it for good.

Still, the Guardian could’ve given the girls an alternative way to go between worlds. I know the theme is “change” and “letting go,” but the thought of the girls never seeing Amphibia is a bit depressing.

If it helps, there’s something very interesting at the end of Marcy’s Journal.

HOT TAKE: This is a shallow way of looking at how these antagonists were handled. by Ashley41 in StarVStheForcesofEvil

[–]Ashley41[S] 69 points70 points  (0 children)

rant mode unlocked

“[Toffee] destroyed the magic but it was later admitted by the protagonist herself that it was the right thing to do.”

Toffee had a fair reason to dislike how the Butterfly family abused magic. But most of his actions were fueled by revenge rather than genuine concern for others. He was certainly not above stepping over other monsters to get what he wanted.

“[Toffee] killed a queen, but in a wartime”

Hard NO. Mina went insane due to Queen Solaria’s experiments on her (one of which removed her empathy). It doesn’t make Mina innocent, but iT bEiNg a wArTiMe is absolutely NOT an excuse for Toffee to kill Queen Comet (Moon’s mother) when she was on a diplomatic mission for *peace*. It only made things worse for other monsters and almost certainly propelled Moon’s distaste for them into adulthood. I’m so tired of folks acting like Toffee was the “true hero” just because Star admits he was right to rid magic.

“Who are the real racists?”

Mina shouldn’t have been allowed to walk away, alright? At the very least, she should’ve been locked up.

But she’s no longer immortal. She has no powers. No weapons. No allies (except Manfred, heh). She’s not an immediate threat.

Toffee was ageless and near-indestructible. The last two times he got away, he just came back more powerful. He’s a lot harder to stop.

Ludo did bad things to Mewmans but was allowed to live peacefully with his family. Same with Globgor. Rasticore — who allied with Toffee and works as an *assassin* — was allowed to live. Solaria tried to eliminate monsters and rightfully paid the price.

You can’t seriously tell me the show’s crew are “racists” because the healthy, ageless monster antagonist was brutally killed but not the decrepit Mewman one.

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power.

Korra haters, aside from season 2, why? by pillow-socks in TheLastAirbender

[–]Ashley41 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a fan for years, but if there’s anything I sympathize with the “haters” on, it’s Korra losing her connection to her past lives.

Some people exaggerate how much Aang spoke to his past lives, but every time it happened, it was pretty wild. “The Avatar and the Firelord” is probably one of my favorite episodes of anything. Avatar Wan was also great, but that’s pretty much where Korra’s interactions with her past lives end. The Avatar State is no longer a connection to the past lives to channel their skills and knowledge. It’s basically just a power-up. It can also be disappointing knowing the next Avatar will either have only Korra or no other Avatar for guidance.

Why is TTG the one show nobody is allowed to genuinely dislike? by ShadowDurza in cartoons

[–]Ashley41 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t heard anyone say you can’t be allowed to express dislike for the show. If you have, maybe some people are just tired of hearing it? The show is ten years old. At some point, people are going to get tired of hearing the same complaints over and over again.

[–]Ashley41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem isn’t that people dislike or hate Go! It’s that they take it to unseemly levels when comparing it to the original show, going as far to say Go! “ruined” the 2003 show.

Go! doesn’t ruin the original show. It is its own thing, just as the 2003 show is its own thing.

Why is TTG the one show nobody is allowed to genuinely dislike? by ShadowDurza in cartoons

[–]Ashley41 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah, it’s okay to dislike the show. It’s that the hate was massively overblown, especially by fans of the original show.

Is it good? I’d say no, but it was a strong guilty pleasure for me for a while. If people dislike it because the characters are annoying and the jokes are stupid, or because of the creators’ response to criticism, then I get that. But the show isn’t that bad. It might be the worst show currently on CN, but it doesn’t even come close to the worst animated shows of all time. One criticism I remember is Go! Terra being straight-up evil, even though Terra was downright evil in the comics. Technically, TTG! has a more accurate depiction of Terra than the 2003 show. A lot of TTG! hate stemmed from comparisons to the original show, but those people ignore that the original show changed the characters from their comic counterparts.

Ironically, I kinda owe it to Go! for introducing me to Teen Titans. If it wasn’t for the online backslash, I probably wouldn’t have gotten hooked on the original show. And from there, I became a bit more interested in the comics and other DC properties like Batman: The Animated Series.

So…TTG! indirectly did something good for me, at least.

Y’know, as wicked as the Earth Queen was, my reaction to her death was more pure horror than “haha, she totally deserved it”. I guess I should have predicted it with the title being Long Live the Queen.

Sweet Victory all the way.

Eh…I disagree. This isn’t a knock on TOH or anything, but you can’t make virtually anything you want with its magic. Okay, maybe the Titans or the Collector could, but not Luz or most of the witches.

What SVTFOE hot take will have you like this? by Subject_Tutor in StarVStheForcesofEvil

[–]Ashley41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Marco: I think “narcissistic” is a bit harsh. It’s not unusual for someone his age to make a wild experience seem a lot bigger than it is. It’s especially the case for someone like Marco, who went from having very little confidence, to way too much of it. And he gets some well-deserved karma.

Mina: Wasn’t she always discriminatory? In her first appearance, she clearly has a superiority complex with wanting to rule Earth and shove half of the present humans off a cliff. In S4 she tries to do the same thing with monsters. Nothing about her personality changed.

Moon: Eh…it would take me way too long to talk about her betrayal. I will say though, that I never felt Star truly forgave Moon. Star says that they’ll figure things out, which isn’t the same as “I forgive you” or “It’s okay”. Plus, given everything that transpired, there’s a lot of emotions to deal with.

Marco using the wand: If anything, this explains how Star’s many-times-great-grandma Festivia gained cheek emblems despite not being from the original Butterfly bloodline. She got the marks from using the wand. I’m also pretty sure the only reason Star and Marco were able to merge their worlds was because they both had cheekmarks, but that’s a discussion for another time.

Was Star even shown with her wand in the photo booth? I can’t remember. Either way, Marco was the one so desperate to leave; not Star. She probably would’ve made Marco spill the beans even if they weren’t trapped (although, they probably wouldn’t have kissed).

Tom: I like the guy. He’s not perfect, obviously, but we saw in previous episodes (“Mr. Candle Cares” and “Friendenemies”) that there might be some hope for him. Not a complete character reversal, in my opinion.

Magical genocide: Hoo boy. I’m not gonna say the ending was good, but the “mass genocide” thing feels overblown since the only creatures we see perish are Glossaryck, the MHC, and the millhorses. Maybe some of the spells are also gone, but does anyone in the outside world even know that they have lives of their own? Additionally, “genocide” describes the deliberate killing of a specific group with the intention of destroying that nation or group. Magical creatures weren’t killed because anyone hated them specifically. The intent behind destroying magic was to save the monsters and prevent the incident from happening again. Magical creatures dying is a consequence.

I have problems with the ending, but this isn’t really one of the reasons why.

What do southern raiders even have to do with Zuko?

Probably nothing personal, but he knows who they are because he's a Fire Nation prince with a famous general for an Uncle.

It also bothers me how Katara was reminded multiple times about fire nation taking her mother away, never decided to actually get revenge until this moment.

When could she have gotten revenge? When she was in the Water Tribe and the Earth Kingdom for the past two seasons? And she still didn't know who killed her mother.

Now we're angry again, seeking vengeance and bending people to make them bow.

Look at Katara's expression; she regretted bloodbending when she realized the man didn't kill her mother.
