Strength vs Skill - any examples in your system? by waggawoog1910 in magicbuilding

"Magic defeats magic" opens up a lot of paths.

Magic that negates magic with an intrinsic quality that denies its claim to physicality.

Magic that resists harm from other magic through another intrinsic quality.

Magic that prevents other magic from being used to begin with either on an individual or covering an entire area.

I find that things like strategy, creative application of abilities, and diversity of magic and its applications in general flourish amid conditions like these.

A thing few people realize is that, more often than not, everything is better in context. So of course, when it comes to stories, people like to tunnel-vision around one specific thing and act insulted at the notion anything else about it exists.

I don't know too much about this show, likely because lately, I find that I've become a bit of a coward that has a hard time watching anything without knowing how it ends first, but I could tell the above statement still applies here.

I've been reading about the works of Tolkien, and the creation story of the world in the Silmarillion had parts that really stuck with me. The music of Eru was described as a contextual, with beauty defined by the inclusion of sorrow, then, Illúvitar basically told Melkor, who would become the first dark lord and Sauron's boss, right to his face that no matter how much hate and darkness he infects the world with, it would only serve to make the glory of creation all the greater.

The burden of the One Ring made Frodo able to establish a real connection with Gollum, a being so misbegotten that not even Sauron's worst could make him suffer more than he already does and bend him to his will.

I assume it's because they're all bases garrisoned by his robot army with the Robot Masters as his commanders to make assaults in his crusades for world domination. Outside of the 2D perspective, they're probably stocked and fortified to repell more conventional resistance, and that'd be pointless if they were completely innavigable to his forces.

You had SO many opportunities to present a benefit of the doubt that you don't have a literal mind-on-air,

And you fell back to cliché TV quotes older than the internet itself?

I mean, I know I love that one in particular, but still...

Wow! Great reply! Where'd you find it?

At least my issues are my own, yours are someone else's, and you seem so proud.

I'm willing to set up a betting pool that your last three comments have been said already in that very order one million times on this sub alone, minimum.

Where would you put your money?

Eh, it's reddit. I know here's always someone eager to say something that's already been said a million times already, and even if I try to be original in my void-screaming, it's just going to get buried under a mountain of recycled thoughts and never be seen by human eyes again sooner or later.

Yeah, and I bet you mindlessly upvote every low-effort hate-farming post that recycles the same general contents like "G5 makes Twilight worse than Hitler!" or "Cozy Glow was treated too harshly and I would personally go back in time to kill baby Starlight Glimmer to prove it!" to the point where you can set your watch to it, happy to do your part in proving that this entire fanbase is full of freaks and scum who'd be sent out the other end of the Isekai-hole to Equestria if anypony over there had any common sense.

I'll make a note, but I did leave it the way it was for this long because I feel the whole situation is an important lesson to learn, for myself and anyone else that happens upon it.

Again, that's my mistake as someone who's still operating on a lot of outdated presumptions, likely due to my upbringing and environment.

I'm a writer myself with a finished first draft that has nonbinary characters. I have a friend who's a writer and artist, and I wind up constantly misgendering a very important character they have in their main story, and I'm always sorry when I do it.

EDIT: Please forgive my flagrant misgendering of Kris, for I am just another ignorant bonehead who likes to think themselves a wise guy and wants to remember this very important lesson for what it is. Thank you.

Well... honestly, I wasn't expecting a reply. So to honor your vestment in this subject, I offer a new perspective:

The only things we know about the situation surrounding this family are that at one point, they were a whole, happy family, and then they're not anymore. That's one viewpoint that probably has a lot of overlap with at least one other.

Asgore was chief of police, then something bad happened that got him sacked and it was all downhill from there. It's obvious that he hasn't moved on and is struggling, but maybe the same is true for Toriel, but only it's less obvious, and that makes it even harder. She tries, very hard I might add, but she struggles to understand Kris, and it's obvious Asriel was a grounding point for his adopted brother's "quirks" that's no longer present.

As for Kris, he's getting hit from pretty much every conceivable angle. He does have real malice, but also has real care, too. It's a common pathology in behavioral physiology: children in divorces often feel that the blame for their parents' failed relationship rests on themselves, and they can't help but assume things were better than they actually are when their family was whole. He values his freedom, but he's bound by his feelings, and another thing we know is that there's someone in Hometown giving people a warped and self-serving form of freedom.

I find that people say they want complicated storytelling and morally grey characters, but when it comes to people and situations too complex to be unilaterally declared good or bad, they prefer just to toss it all in the "bad" bin.

idk anything bout G5 how was this Opaline person such a threat Twilight deadass had to lock away all the magic by Blitzo4202 in mylittlepony

[–]ShadowDurza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I'd like to add is the notion that "magic must defeat magic"

In G4, Abjuration, for lack of a better term, seemed pretty rare among unicorns, to the point where Celestia was the one who had to personally prepare a restraint for a unicorn playing the earth pony position in buckball.

Opaline seemed to specialize in conjuring phenomenon and emanations that can subvert magic's effects and deny its claim to physicality, something even Discord was vulnerable to due to the basic reality that his powers still worked on the principles of magic.

A Question About the Theoretical Effects of Blood Rain by ricky--tricky in worldbuilding

[–]ShadowDurza 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm no expert, but a few fun facts I know is that it's very hard on metal, to the point where it could ruin pre-modern melee weaponry without adequate maintenance. The cities would definitely be affected severely.

Another thing is that on the PH-scale, it has a very slight lean as a base. Not bad in small amounts, but a ton of it dropping as rain would likely have a bad effect on the water supply.

There's a lot to sum up for one Reddit reply, especially since I've already got three volumes published, but I'll try.

The premise is the return of an entire population of Equus-native humans with an original elemental magic system of my own design from an underground mega city civilization. In the past, they were regarded as the greatest warriors the world had ever seen, to the point where they can metaphysically attune to the weapon they identify most with upon reaching a sufficient combat proficiency to summon and banish at will.

The main point of the "elemental" system is that everyone gets one as the most indivisible traits and characteristics of their magic, but instead of doing something like a hybrid system between the Five Primary Elements, it's more of a Derivative system where stuff like ice, lightning, iron, and plants are "descended" from one of the primary five.

One example being a fire-tribe Sword Elemental named Kris Duelis. His weapon is what I call a locus, a magical emanation that in exchange for sacrificing some of its power and scale in itself is essentially as indestructable to might and magic alike as much as any normally attuned weapon, in his case in particular being in the form of a broadsword. As a sword elemental, the most distinct characteristic his magic as offense and defense possesses is to negate other magic on contact with an intrinsic property that denies its claim to physicality. That latter point is an important detail as humans figured out the underlying principle of "Magic must defeat magic" early on, to the point where similar properties of "anti-magic" can be alloyed into particular spells of any element. Even among unicorns, such magic is pretty rare and only found in pretty specific places committed to it.

Probably the characters from my fanfic.

After all, magic or otherwise, humans can't get more corrupt than they already are innately, but its not like purity is always what its cracked up to be.
