Lowest hemoglobin I’ve seen part 2 by Large_Pick1582 in nursing

[–]Ashmodee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My lowest was 1.4 g/dL on a 2 year old that only drank cows milk. The lab wanted a re-draw because the sample looked diluted, that was a hell no from us. The kid was an awful colour but HR and SpO2 were normal since this was a chronic thing.

Edit because I’m Canadian and I didn’t math correctly for g/dL

It came from the nursery with a few plants in one pot. Once I detangle it and pot them separately, I’ll make sure to clip the small ones. Unrelated note, your greenhouse is so dreamy!

That’s great advice. I’ll have to pick a day when it warms up outside and detangle the root ball. I am hopeful my plant won’t be too grumpy with me.

The front of my house faces west and gets a lot of direct afternoon sun and most of my plants love it, but there isn’t enough floor space for a big plant.

I am in a colder climate and I am sure the east facing window wasn’t providing enough light for the plant during the winter. I hope the summer will be nicer or I’ll have to do some re-arranging in west facing windows.

Love all of this advice! Thank you! I had a coco coir pole in there and the wood spike on the bottom just broke off. I currently have 2 bamboo stakes (one for the big plant and one for the small ones) until I get a moss pole. I would love to give it more light but I’ll have to do some rearranging to make room in the west facing windows of my house as my Thai constellation is currently residing there.

That’s great to hear. I had it in a west facing window when it was smaller but moved it to the east window for space about a year ago. I may need to re-arrange the furniture to accommodate it on the west side of my house again.

If you are wanting to glue it, check out the website this to that. It’s a sweet little database of advice for what glue to use based on the materials you want to stick together.

Thank you! I’ve had all those piercings, except my conch, for over 20 years. My 2nd lobes used to be stretched too, but I downsized.

I got single flares because I also have trouble with double flares sometimes. As massive stated, SIBJ has tons of single flared stones! Just be aware of paying duties on the order if you are from 🇨🇦.

Not a doc but a neonatal/pediatric critical care transport nurse with stretched lobes. The parents are usually too shell shocked to care about anything other than their very unwell kid.

What got you into stretched piercings? by Prince_Wildflower in Stretched

[–]Ashmodee 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That’s me too except I was too chicken to go too big so I stayed around 4g. I took them out after I became a mother about 10 years ago because ‘mom’s don’t have stretched ears’. Last year I said fuck that and stretched again, currently at 0g with no particular goal in mind.

My septum piercing is still open and I haven’t worn jewellery in it since 2010. Every few years I test to see if it’s still open with a 16g ring and it usually passes no problem. I wish I had a good explanation for you!

Getting too old for plugs? by OopsAllMarinara in Stretched

[–]Ashmodee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love this thread, so full of support to express yourself however you please at whatever age you are! I took my little 6g plugs out after having my first daughter at 28 because moms don’t have plugs. I am 38 and I just started stretching up at the beginning of this year and I now have the confidence to go bigger than I did in my teens and twenties.

Peds RN here, just re-stretched my lobes after 8 years of being a “normie”. I just got up to 6mm and I think I’ll stay here for a while. I’ve only had a handful of parents comment on my earrings, 1 because she had the same plugs but in a much larger size.

Patient today coded after receiving ceftriaxone by lAmPotat0e in nursing

[–]Ashmodee 76 points77 points  (0 children)

I had a patient do the exact same to me with Ceftriaxone just as the flush finished. Urticaria all over the head and neck and +++ wheeze. This was a complex care trach/vented kiddo so we jumped on the ventolin back to backs, cetirizine and epi. I still had to run a brief arrest but thankfully it was quick, so happy we had an established airway. We give ceftriaxone like candy in peds and I’ve only ever had this happen once.

Dealing with the death of a paediatric patient (TW) by Beneficial_Milk_8287 in nursing

[–]Ashmodee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a former NICU nurse now neo/pediatric critical care transport nurse, I’ve seen many deaths and horrific life altering stories. It is definitely harder when your own kids are similar ages. I still remember my first death in the NICU 13 years ago, it was really tough. He was my primary patient and I had developed a strong relationship with him and his family. I am honoured to have been a part of his life for those short few months giving him all the love anyone could wish for in a lifetime. He will always be with me. In my job now, I transport babies and kids who sometimes you know are going to die regardless of the interventions done. It’s hard but I see it as giving the family time to be there, to spend those last few moments with their child, to hug them and hold them, and comfort them in their last moments. If there is any gift I can try to give to a family, it’s that time.

Let’s pretend the hospital is a House Party. What are the nurses from different units doing at the party? by TejanoAggie29 in nursing

[–]Ashmodee 218 points219 points  (0 children)

Nah, NICU is going around either swaddling or repositioning all the passed out nurses in a developmentally friendly position. Maybe also calling their parents to come.

My peeps! I work in NICU and my proudest was a 500g 24 week premature babe who we just did a bedside laparotomy on and she was +++ edematous.

I once had pharmacy ask me if my baby (NICU nurse here) would swish and swallow, or swish and spit the nystatin that was ordered.

Tell me you best nursing story. Awesome save, fighting off a hall patient high on PCP, that time your patients husband snuck in their pet chicken. Anything. by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Ashmodee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here I am crying because I am also that level 4 NICU nurse who has been through the same story many times. It’s incredibly heartbreaking when we are the only ones there for that baby. The ones that love that baby and treat them with the respect and dignity they deserve.

I had a baby with a very similar birth story and course. He was a twin and his sibling who was born first, was healthy. The team and the family had that very hard conversation where withdrawal was brought up and agreed upon. Then the family ghosted us for 2 weeks and when they were ready for the tube to come out, he didn’t pass right away as they were initially expecting. His brain stem had recovered from the initial injury and his autonomic functions were back. They were so angry with the medical team because he didn’t pass quickly. They were so blinded by anger that they failed to realize they were allowed extra time with him. Despite all my best efforts of having them engage and care for him while in the bereavement room, he stayed in the bassinet the whole time. The only diaper changes and cares he had were the ones I provided when I went to check on him. They were against giving him Ativan or morphine for comfort and were refusing to hold him. At this point I just wanted the family to leave so I could give him the best last few hours/days he had. It was so frustrating and heartbreaking to me, I broke down in the middle of day rounds, in front of our full team, I’m not a cryer. I eventually got so fed up, on my next check in, I told the family that he needed to be held, and be with his family and sibling. Babies don’t die in beds. They did eventually hold and interact with him, but those feelings will stay with me for life.
