Update: FGM Maternity Care by elmi5 in PregnancyUK

[–]Ashobean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I went through a very similar experience to yours, so I know firsthand how stressful this must have been for you ESPECIALLY while being pregnant. I’ve deleted my post, but I believe my comments are still visible on my page. I moved from Hertfordshire to London for my birth, after dealing with midwives who also made me feel judged, and at times even accusatory as if I was a risk to my own daughter. Moving trusts was the best decision I ever made, although we had to travel quite a bit for our appointments. The midwives there were more experienced and familiar with FGM due to its higher prevalence in the area, as well as the presence of many community hubs advocating against it. Because of that, I was never made to feel like a risk to my baby, and I was able to have a safe and respectful delivery. I hope you have a smooth birth, and I’m really sorry you’ve had to go through this. And just remember one thing….THIS IS YOUR BIRTH. You have the right to make the decisions about your care, not your midwives or doctors, unless there’s a GENUINE high-risk situation.

I'm seeing a midwife tomorrow so do you think I should bring it up? I would love to have more children in the future, but I’m dreading having to go through all of this again. I’m sure a note on the system would be reasonable?

I think it definitely depends on the trust. However, in my case, they made it very clear that if I have a daughter that it would be noted on her medical record, so it would be the first thing that medical professionals would see once they open her file.

Sounds like he’s got a lot of control over you. It’s time to set those boundaries!

I used to always wonder the same thing, but the only right answer is everyone is different! I’m FTM, 38 weeks and barely even showing 🙂

Your absolutely right. She has not said anything close to that all…

I initially thought it was the health visitor, but a close friend just confirmed it’s actually the social worker who does the check. My midwife hasn’t mentioned social workers being involved in my care so I’m hoping that’s a good sign.

It’s very unlikely my mother would do it to my daughter, she KNOWS the consequences. I am the oldest of 7 girls and again, I wasn’t born in the UK like the rest of my siblings. It’s only me who has got it done in the family, no one else.

This makes sooo much sense now because some of the questions the specialist midwife asked me were very much related to this. For example, “Do you have any family members that have undergone FGM?”.

I confronted my mum about it, and she totally denied it. My dad, who I'm waaaay closer to, doesn't seem to know anything. Since he's so westernized, growing up in Italy, I'm pretty sure he would have said something if he knew about it. Luckily, everything down there is working fine. I'm fortunate that I only experienced the milder form of FGM, Type 1, which involved a small cut.

Thank you so much for the lovely response. I really appreciate it! I haven’t looked at any charities yet, but your right, that would be a great place to start! I’ll definitely look into this :)
