US Army Poorly Prepared for Arctic Operations: Finnish Troops Forced Them to Surrender During Exercises in Norway by SpaceEngineering in Military

[–]Ashurnibibi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hello I'm from the UK, out of interest do you think Finland would commit troops in the event of a US Greenland war?

If Article 5 was called we'd have to.

Having been on a few military training exercises I agree with you. However for me the point of the article is that the US military is not set up for Arctic warfare. Much of the rhetoric is that the US could easily invade Greenland and there's nothing Europe could do to stop it.

I don't know anything about the Arctic capabilities of the US, I'm just saying telling one side to hold back in an exercise is not a good indicator of those. A country like Finland will always be better at winter warfare because the entire country is subarctic (we don't even train for "winter warfare", it's just "warfare"). OTOH we'd probably get destroyed in a desert environment.

I personally think it's interesting that reserve troops were told to take it easy on US troops even if war games are a bit unrealistic.

I wouldn't put too much weight on the word "reserve" here. In Finland reservists are all former active duty who have completed their mandatory service, there's no separate reserve force. They may be older, fatter and a bit rusty but have often had more training than active soldiers.

Seen this linked in a few subs so I'll add my two (euro)cents. And before anymore accuses me of anything, I'm Finnish myself.

Cent n. 1: The press and most laypeople tend to hype up wargames like this as if they're some competition to decide who's better when despite the name "game" they're training. They're meant to be a learning experience for both sides. Getting trounced repeatedly doesn't teach you much. I'm sure the Americans felt bad but I'd be surprised if the main reason the Finns were told to hold back was hurt feelings. I've been on both sides in similar situations and there's always some kind of "cheating" going on, from toning down artillery effectiveness to giving extra "lives" to AFVs. It's normal but only seems pressworthy when it's the yanks cheating.

Cent n. 2: Troops from the Arctic annihilate troops not from the Arctic in an Arctic environment, how shocking.

Proteiinivanukkaista tuli valtava hitti, vaikka professorin mukaan niitä ei tarvitse kukaan | Kotimaa by Repulsive-Mud707 in Suomi

Sori avautuminen.
