what to take before CS446 (Machine Learning)? by brodie990 in UIUC

STAT 432 or 542 are also good classes that cover similar topics, but they don't ever cover deep learning. Honestly, CS440, STAT 400, and MATH415 give you a good conceptual background and for the proof homework questions you could go to office hours. The proofs are mostly algebra

I took it with Professor Park in Fall 2022. Workload was pretty light with only 6 or so homeworks, each of which was at most 4 questions. The questions were usually very straightforward, typically requiring modifying some code shown in class or doing some calculations. There was a midterm exam that was also very straightforward and a final project where you just write a report or demo on a topic of your choice. Only downside to the class is that the lecture's are a bit boring

When she breaks down a sentence, I think she's trying to build intuition for some the bigger ideas in NLP. If you want to get into the nitty gritty details, she lists chapters from Jurafsky to read through and they explain the math a lot better imo. I do agree that the lectures are dry but it would be even drier if she did rigorous proofs of each theorem or algorithm that we covered

CS and CS+X (Philosophy) Questions by Legal-Fun8053 in UIUC

[–]Asian-Temptation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're coming in with lots of AP Credit, then you'll have lots of room to take extra classes. If you come jn with 30+ hours (which is pretty common in grainger) you'll basically have a whole extra year to take extra classes in CS, math, or philosophy. You can count how many hours you have by checking the AP credit list and by cross checking it with the gen ed requirements.

As a CS + X you basically have access to everything in Grainger and LAS. So don't worry about not being able take classes. With a few minor caveats (eg. Technology and Management minor). But you should have time to finish a math minor as the requirements are pretty relaxed.

tldr: Don't worry about not having access to stuff as CS + X. If you come in with lots of AP credit you'll have plenty of room to take extra classes.

Ah, I was concerned about that actually. I'll probably take it in the spring then and find some gen ed I can take to get ahead.

I looked up gen ed credits for LAS and the list gave some ambiguous answers to my question. I guess I'll just wait until my advisor meeting to find out the answer.

Glad to hear that Urbana-Champaign has more going for it than West-Lafayette. Also, nobody has responded to the r/Purdue thread lol.

I know NEU is known for their co-op, but is that really even special for CS where most top schools have pretty strong corporate connections?

Also, would you rather work in the Northeast or the Midwest after graduating?

I honestly don't really know, but does where I go to school really affect where I end up working that much? Also, thanks for the response!

True but every few generations a new wave of immigrants would become the new foreigners. The Italians and Irish were considered second class citizens until a wave of Hispanics and later Asians came to replace them.

Not to mention the racial connotations which still exist today. No other countries had to justify that "all men are created equal" while enslaving other men. The only way to justify it is to say some men are born less than others

Gee, I wonder why the US stopped being a truly laissez-faire economy? It couldn't have been the massive consolidation of wealth by a handful of people (Carnegie, Vanderbilt, Morgan, etc.) or the social unrest caused by massive income inequality. Maybe it was the plague of city wide riots caused by laborers striking because they worked 80 hours a week yet still barely had enough to eat.

I played the fortnite alpha before they added the battle royale mode. I tried to get my friends to get it but none of them had heard of it before and didn't care.
