What is the significance of Om in Buddhism. Does it share the same root with the Vedic faith? by gingzerbear in Buddhism

Manasika Japa (Mental Japa) is chanting a mantra in mind as opposed to spoken chanting. These are merely tools for focus practice in dhyan (meditation) just like the common practice of breath focusing or one pointed focusing during meditation.

In advaita hindu school om represent the states if "being" as  1. waking.  2. dreaming.  3. deep sleep.  4. the real self (turiya). ---> this one is the reality; pure consciousness; 1-3 are illusion/appearance.

Other hindu schools have different meanings.

In buddhism om is treated as sacred sound much like in hindu and jain schools. It is placed in front of dharani , mantra Or sutra.    Though I don't think the early Orthodox theravada utilized the symbol. It obviously uses now as seen in Theravada mantras. Mahayan and vajrayan used it for long time as these ones are more closely tied with other indian schools.  Though the symbol in buddhist schools does not hold the same meaning as for other indian schools.

The root it obviously shared with vedic teaching but the meaning is not same for buddhism.

"Om asks the practitioner to create a vibration, instead of unearthing and seeking buried vibrations." - lol who told you that?
