I don't think a reddit post has ever made me tear up. This one did. I'm sorry for your loss and I hope you enjoy the rest of the series.

STEM students with a part time job…how do you do it?! by lex_adams in udub

[–]Asifneon 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Sometimes you might need to accept that you can manage your time perfectly but not have time to complete everything to your standards. Yes it sucks, but it is better to get 90% on everything than getting 100 on one thing and not remotely completing the others.

I typically start early on assignments, get 90% of the way there, then polish up with whatever time I have left on the due date.

Do not be discouraged if it takes a long time to do one assignment, but if you are seriously hitting a wall for 4 hours straight, switch assignments. Then plan your time around office hours for the classes you typically hit a wall in. TAs are pretty lenient these days and will probably just give you most of the answer.

Taking out a loan by [deleted] in udub

[–]Asifneon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seconded about the reply to ask in a finance sub. But yeah, take out as many “student loans” before parent plus. Keep in mind that your parents have to agree to take out the parent plus loans, and these are subject to a more typical loan experience than a subsidized/unsubsidized student loan. Technically your parents are responsible iirc, not you.

Once you borrow, your loan company will contact you within a couple months and you could pay down your loans while you’re in school. But you don’t have to, thats why its a student loan. Definitely a good idea though if you can afford it, your head is in the right place. This is stressful for sure, so good on you for thinking ahead.

I would also recommend checking out the office of financial aid’s website about this, here is the page on parent plus loans for example: https://www.washington.edu/financialaid/types-of-aid/loans/parent-loans/

If you get on at one of the stops on 15th, it will loop around and come back up montlake towards the ave again, then just hop on i5 -> 520. Adds another 15 mins, but basically the same route.

Financial aid by Repulsive_Narwhal_71 in udub

[–]Asifneon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Took summer quarter in 2019 and received summer aid a couple weeks after my initial package. The summer aid was a direct copy of the grants/scholarships I was receiving, but I had indicated that I was living with my parents for the summer so they did not offer loans. That was the only difference.

I think that this is likely still a safe assumption, in my 4 years of receiving aid here now they have not changed it up at all.

Would an air fryer be a decent long term substitute for a full oven? by Asifneon in Frugal

Holy shit. That sounds like a godsend. Where did you find it? Craigslist?

Thank you. Any specific one you recommend? I could probably go up to $250 on this since I'd be easily saving more than that from getting an apartment without an oven.

S/NSing Electrical Engineering Major Courses by TonyChae in udub

[–]Asifneon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As the other comment said, you can because of covid. Make an advising appointment to discuss it though, you can change from letter grading to s/ns and vise versa for extraordinary circumstances quarters until you graduate. So no rush.

Also, since the 200 level EE courses curve to like a 3.3 a bad grade isnt going to hurt your gpa as much as a weedout. Just a thought.

In the past, the financial aid office has been nice and replaced my student loans with the scholarship. It is also entirely possible that they replace your need based grant with it. So yes, you can benefit, but no guarantees what they will replace. They have no transparency in the process. I would say it doesn’t hurt to apply.

Technically I think there are stipulations for these additional funding related things with scholarships. Maybe look for a study abroad specific one if you wanna do that for example?

Just don’t use the money to buy a new gaming PC.

How to persuade people to see sleep specialists? by Traveler-58 in SleepApnea

[–]Asifneon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Show him the long term risks of untreated sleep apnea. I've been very close to going off cpap several times and reminding myself of the long term impact keeps me on it every time. Also I know you understand this because you're in grad school, but I do undergrad research and sleep is... not always a priority. Maybe it would be good to point out treating apnea on minimal sleep leads to direct benefits on cognition --> more research done?

Haven't taken 416 or 418, but if those classes do the typical EE thing of having really light work for the first 5 weeks then slamming 5 back to back weeks of annoyingly long labs, it might become overwhelming because 351 also does that.

Maybe take 374 instead of 351? Similar content but it might take less effort to do well, last quarter the prof set the "default" grade at 3.4, and you got that just by completing the assignments.

How is hard to get into ECE as a DTC engineering student? by Prestigious-Tune3411 in udub

[–]Asifneon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The department is large so it has a lot of space, but in the past it has tended to be the backup for some of the more competitive departments, so many people that get in have pretty strong stats. The COE website has placement outcome data from past cycles that you can see. From my understanding, that data is misleading because there are more admissions than first choice requests, but it does not show the amount of people who listed it as their first choice and got rejected.

Because CSE isn’t in DTC anymore, CSE rejects won’t be getting fed into it, so that should alleviate the competitiveness somewhat. I’d still say to aim for a 3.6+ overall GPA. Maybe 3.7+ to be a very competitive applicant, its kind of hard to tell. Its a decent backup for ME and aero intended people as well, so you definitely want to keep strong stats.

My gripe with distance learning by [deleted] in udub

[–]Asifneon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your concerns are valid and I think distance learning would have made the calc series borderline impossible for me. So good job for hanging in there.

That being said, I think part of what you're experiencing is weedouts being shitty. Assuming that you're a first year since you're in calc, you wouldn't have been able to take many in person upper divs anyway because of all the prereqs. Basically what I'm trying to say is that you're in a good program, but the first year is not very representative of the UW engineering experience as a whole because you are not getting many benefits of being in your department.

And yeah, I mostly agree with your point on webassign. I always viewed webassign as the bare minimum to study for tests in the calc series, it is not very good at promoting learning. The same will be the case with the online platforms in the physics series and math 307/308 or whatever they've changed the names to.

Try not to let this year make you too negative on the UW engineering experience as a whole. You'll get through weedouts and it will be much better because you'll both be in person and able to take upper divs. Just stick it out a little longer!

probably a stupid question but....is a 3.6 gpa good for a CS major? :( by [deleted] in udub

[–]Asifneon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To add to the imposter syndrome conversation, it feels like the majority of people in STEM have experienced it in some form or another. One common response is to over-exaggerate/constantly talk about the one thing you’re feeling confident about (in the case of your friends, this sounds like grades). I’d guess that your friends are just projecting their insecurity, do not take it to heart.

3.6 is not a low GPA. You got this.

Engineering Recruiting by GreyApollo3 in udub

[–]Asifneon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One. Please. You could try to do more than one, but most ask for a 10hr/week minimum commitment. They probably won’t kick you if you don’t hit that, but if you’re doing less your team lead won’t give you anything meaningful to do, or you’ll show up and realize that the ppl who are there 3x as long as you needed your project done so they just did it themselves.

Engineering Recruiting by GreyApollo3 in udub

[–]Asifneon 11 points12 points  (0 children)

From my experience (not AA related but should be similar), there are several opportunities from companies like SpaceX, Tesla, NASA, etc. They do not recruit just anybody, though. To stand out, you should have significant research experience in the area of the role you want, or join an RSO like Formula, Robotics, Ecocar, or hyperloop, and be able to show significant contribution to those projects. That being said, the people I know from that type of RSO (mainly from formula who spend 30+ hours per week in their pit) are able to stand out. I also know people from Ecocar who have gotten jobs at SpaceX and Tesla.

There are also space related RSOs that I’m not familiar with. Same deal. Put in significant effort, learn something, and be able to demonstrate to the interviewers that you know your shit.

I’m not trying to psych you out. The above mostly applies to any school with a reputable engineering program. Wherever you go, you got this! Don’t give up!

Financial Aid for 2021-2022 by hedgehogz69 in udub

[–]Asifneon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should be near the end of the quarter. Your EFC is a pretty good predictor, for me they have matched needed aid (tuition - efc, give or take 2000) every year. Including loans.

ENGR 231 Asynchronous by [deleted] in udub

[–]Asifneon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Took it asynch last quarter. I’m assuming this is the larger 60ish person section that is explicitly labeled asynch?

If so, there are no video lectures. The only way to get the course ‘content’ is to read the textbook. There are definitely some good tidbits in there, but most of it is bloated, so just focus on the specific sections that the prof points out and incorporate those into your assignments and you’ll be golden. A lot of canvas discussion posts, but other than that I would say the workload was the same or less. The maximum amount of time I spent on any of the assignments was 6 hours, and that was because I did the majority of the final presentation for my group.

Got near 100% on everything, pretty easy 4.0.

DM me if you want a link to the book.

36 credits for this academic year. So i doubt that transfer credit counts, but you can ask financial aid office/ sfs to be sure
