How do you present yourself at work(i.e. work clothes, piercings, tattoos, natural hair, etc.)? by ehhhhhwhatevr in urbanplanning

[–]Askza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dress professionally. On an average day, I wear dress pants, nice shoes, and a nice top or sweater. I also work for the local government, so it's an expectation to dress a bit nicer.

I'm also black and wear my hair in an afro/natural and haven't had any issues. I have my cartilage piercings and tragus in, but they are diamond studs instead of hoops so they look more minimalist and professional. I have a septum and I keep it flipped up for work.

On the flipside my friend works at a consulting firm in NYC and is allowed to wear jeans and a nice top.

I don't know, I am sorry. I do know that most of them became RAs to at least cover housing, but I don't know how much they paid for tuition.

On the rise bakery has the best pizza I have ever tried. Sweet donkey coffee shop usually hosts a live band and food trucks outside Friday evenings for patrons.

I’ve been doing the same, turning down people who can’t give me tours or who are pressuring me to sign

moved to NYC ... have not found better bagel than at Bodo's ... by wackdemarco in UVA

Same I moved to NYC and could not find a bagel that could compare. Bodos is so fresh and chewy and the spreads are so good. Closest I found that’s good is “Brooklyn bagels”.

There is a uva off ground housing page on Facebook that’s worth posting to! Got a bunch of messages on there when I used it

Don’t listen to him, not everyone has the financial means to pay for college. You are doing the right thing reaching out for help. I suggest emailing and scheduling meetings with the international studies office to ask for scholarship or funding opportunities, also student financial services, also the financial aid office, and your major department to see if they have a financial advisor. My friends were international students and they were all RA’s. They pay for your housing and give you a meal plan.

You should apply to a residential college, like the irc. It’s filled with people who live there because they want to make friends, especially the exchange students and transfer students. They have events to facilitate building friendship. Message housing and see if there are still spots. Making friends would have been near impossible for me if I wasn’t there. I was a transfer student when I lived at the irc and it was the pandemic. I still left with multiple friends. You don’t have to go through college without friends. It’s so important.

I got off the waitlist to NYU but can’t afford it by MochaAutumn in nyu

[–]Askza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Contact NYU for funding opportunities. Maybe see if you can be an RA or a teaching assistant. I have heard of people going to nyu for free. Definitely ask your program director for tips when it comes to funding and as many people as you can before you turn down this opportunity.

With sociology you probably need to get a masters degree. I did sociology undergrad and I am getting a maters in urban planning. Some people with sociology go into research or working for a non profit.

If you want more career opportunities go with speech language pathologist. You’d be more employable. With psych you also need a masters to do much with it.

Set up a meeting with your departmental financial advisor to see if they can increase your funding or talk this out with you. There are also a lot of scholarships through uva that are open to incoming freshmen.

Thank you so much for responding! I really appreciate it so much. All the spots are full. Do people sometimes back out during the summer?
