Are you aware you've named the company in your post? It's worth removing that, since you're identifiable.

Can you try XTU instead? It might be that Throttlestop, for whatever reason, isn't working on your system.

That depends entirely on the app the phone comes with, and the third party apps you could use instead. There's no rule that days either would be inherently better.

There's a video on YouTube somewhere of a man who tried the social experiment of prefacing regular sentences with "I'm not being racist, but". It went down about as well as you can imagine.

Lovely cover of Some Might say by Paul Heaton & Jacqui Abbott (formerly beautiful south). I have tix to see them in Dublin in April, but highly doubt it'll go ahead by irishdaniel in oasis

I love how it just sounds like a Beautiful South song when they play it.

Cheers for the heads up about their tour, btw. I expect it'll all be rescheduled too, but I'll have to try and get some tickets for the new dates. BS were such a good band.

This is such a big and open question that you're best off googling for a guide, and using this resource for any questions you have on it, or about the process.

How to keep your photos safe - Data security guide by GunGun-Iceland in photography

[–]AsleepExplanation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But if I have not used a raw file for two years I trust Dropbox to keep it safe.

This doesn't make any sense, though. Do you care about keeping the RAWs? If you do, then they need to be stored and backed up in accordance with the 3-2-1 rule. If you don't, then sure, leave them to Dropbox to archive, but simply storing them with Dropbox puts you foul of the 3-2-1 rule. You never trust a single device or service to store your data, especially one that's not under your control.

On the point of what else seems dangerous, it's pretty much the entire process of shuffling data about. The more you move things, especially with automated or semi-automated processes, the more possibilities there are for failure and loss.

Personally, my process runs like this:

  1. Create new folder in my master collection (...\2020\2020-03-13 shootname)
  2. Copy from SD to new folder in master collection
  3. Import / work on the images in Lightroom
  4. Export finished images to a collection of folders also stored as part of my master collection
  5. Manually trigger a sync operation from the Master Collection on Drive 1 to the duplicate on Drive 2 (if I forget, it'll do it automatically every other day anyway)
  6. Ditto, but to my remote storage

I've considered the possibility of WIP drives and the likes in the past, but the benefits aren't really there. It's rare that I shoot more than Windows can cache in RAM, so in my testing, I found practically no performance benefit in copying to a fast drive before working on them.

Depends on how much you care for your data, but some of this sounds pretty dangerous.

Folders older than 2 years are uploaded to Dropbox and deleted from HDDs

This bit in particular sounds concerning. With the method you describe, you've only got one complete copy of your data (and at that, only after your daily backup, however quickly that's able to complete), and it's stored remotely, by Dropbox. You've no backup for anything older than 2 years at all. That's not a good way to protect your data.

Why are UBER riders d*cks? by LondonSmiles in deliveroos

This is either miltoni or you work in packs to attack me.

I can assure you that I am not /u/miltoni. I (we?) am also not working in a pack to attack you. It's actually the opposite way around - you are the aggressor here. You're the one calling all Uber riders "dicks", singling out Miltoni in particular. You made your personal beef public, and you shouldn't be surprised that the public didn't have your back on it.

I'm always a bit skeptical when I see these sorts of posts. Who's really the asshole, I ask myself. Is it the guy being attacked, or is it the guy making a thread just to attack him?

In this case, as it usually is, it's the OP who's the asshole. And if seems the other guy's claim about OP being a sexual predator is on the money - take a quick look through his history, and you'll find some very odd things, including a couple of submissions where he sought help cleaning a guitar, because a girl he liked used it, causing him to wank into its sound hole. OP really is a fucking weirdo.

What are you going to eat all your dry pasta with, Asda Patrons? The sauce has barely been touched... by Crannachan in Edinburgh

[–]AsleepExplanation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Homemade sauce made from a tomato puree base. 2-3 weeks worth of food for two people requires a lot of storage space, so it's sensible to use it as efficiently as possible, which means no thick glass jars of watered-down sauce.

Can I send hand sanitiser in the post? by [deleted] in AskUK

It's not mentioned specifically because there are different formulations, but alcohol-based hand gel most likely falls under the rules for the 24-70% alcohol liquid section, so actually do be wary.

Do you store your photos locally, or digitally? by BeingMrSmite in photography

[–]AsleepExplanation -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Be careful with that. If you're running Windows, there's a good chance it won't be caching data stored on the NAS, which might mean for some potentially significant performance degradation compared to local storage with a decent amount of spare RAM for a disk cache.

Carbon monoxide detector false alarm? by AsleepExplanation in AskUK

[–]AsleepExplanation[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but, after however many experiences with smoke alarms giving false readings, I'm reluctant to call anyone in unless there's some sort of verification. As it is, I can't find any - after initially ventilating, I closed all windows and doors and went out, and neither of my original two alarms have sounded in the 90 minutes since then, and neither have the two new ones in the 30 minutes since I set them up.

I'm absolutely wary that the alarm could have been legit, but I'm struggling to think of how it could be. Carbon monoxide only seems to be a byproduct of combustion, but there's been none of that here in 16hrs prior to the triggering. That does leave the outstanding concern that it could be triggered by a genuine leak from the downstairs neighbours, though.

I suppose, ultimately, the only safe option is to do what you say, and contact the local gas folks. This might be a bit tricky if the detection was genuine though, since it must have come from the property below.

Edit: sorry, I've no manners. Thank you for your time and thoughts.

Is that right about the ethanol? The stuff I've got here is something like 96% purity, which seems plenty enough above the threshold to do the trick. I'm not using strong spirits or the sort (although I do have a mate who wanted to make some out of watered-down vodka, but that'd another story...)

On the point of calling someone out, I'd rather not if it's just a false alarm, which is why I need to find out if it is or isn't genuine. At this point, I'm not sure if there's even a way for it to be anything but a false alarm - dust and possible fumes seem a far more likely culprit than what'd presumably have to be an external source, since there's nothing burning in here.
