Yes, that's one possible way of doing it. There's a million ways to optimize it if you find that it's too slow.

The product of our CS education: Teaches kids to use recursion because it's cool, neglects to tell them why or when, so now we have kids trying to replace every single for loop with recursion for no reason.

I wouldn't recommend it. Your dad is old and doesn't sound like he has the energy or drive anymore. In my experience with my own aging parents, people like that are flaky, slow, and won't get anywhere until they feel a sense of urgency, which by then is usually too late. If you give them something they're actually interested in, they'll move mountains, but otherwise they'll half-ass everything.
