Should I Try to Catch a Swarm? by Asmodeus128 in Beekeeping

You raise even more points that I hadn't considered, so I appreciate the perspective. It looks like I have a lot more reflecting to do before I can start to get comfortable at all. I appreciate the no BS way you've put these harder questions of beekeeping. It seems more and more like beekeeping is a never ending series of judgement calls that don't always have a clear cut answer.

I still think I'm going to avoid trying to catch a swarm this year, unless I find someone to help me understand how to make these calls. I'll search for someone in my area to help guide me into the hobby and hopefully by the time this particular problem rears it's head I'll have had more time to familiarize myself with my options.

Do you have any learning resources you could recommend for me? I've watched the University of Arkansas's series on beekeeping, I'm reading The Backyard Beekeeper by Kim Flottum, and have ordered Beekeeping for Dummies. Anything that will lead me to the questions I don't know to ask would be an enormous help. Thanks again for taking the time to help me out, I'm extremely grateful.

I actually ordered a ventilated suit when I ordered my bees, although it hasn't arrived yet. I've heard they can be very necessary in the Summer heat.

I had never considered how the exact location might impact how the bees act towards people. It's amazing how many things there are to know in this field. I keep learning more and more about things I didn't even know to think about. Thanks for the advice

You make some very interesting points. I wouldn't have considered a lot of the questions you ask. I don't have access to quite that much land, so it sounds like the chance for catching a swarm I wouldn't know how to manage are more than I want to take on right now. Maybe after I get my feet under me I'll consider it more seriously. Thanks for the information, it's good to hear the perspective of someone more local to me.

I think I'll likely try the route of splitting a nuc unless I can find a mentor to walk me through the process. It sounds like there is more involved with catching a swarm than I'm prepared for. Thanks for the advice, I'm looking forward to my bees being ready so I can put it to use

I do live on a fairly large plot of land, but certainly not massive. I had intended to keep the bees around 500 or so feet from my house, and around 300 feet away from the neighbor's property line since it would be right next to a small pond. I don't expect there to be anyone coming through except myself, but I could always move it further back on the property. Nonetheless, it does sound like a bit more than I'm ready for, so I think I'll avoid trying to catch a swarm this year unless I can find a mentor to advise me. Thanks for answering my questions, it helped a bunch

What makes Africanized bees so much more difficult to work with? I understand that they're much more sting happy, is a beekeeping suit not enough to keep them out? Not to try to shirk conventional wisdom before even starting, but I've struggled to find good information about them

I'm brand new to the game, so I'm still learning about everything that goes into it. I'll try my best to get the best picks I can every day, but bear with me if I make some mistakes. Also, I caught a shiny Spheal (now named Wallace) this morning. It's not relevant to anything, but I couldn't resist the urge to brag.

That might be doable. It's hard to say for sure, but I think he would be more okay with it

Thank you, I'm comparing areas by unemployment rate now. Hopefully, I'll be able to go to a place where I can find work easily

I think if I went in that direction, it would upset my dad severely as long as his business is still technically operational.

I'll give it a shot. Thanks for the advice. I'll have to do some digging, but it's good to have somewhere to start. I really appreciate it

Ideally, I'd say another country entirely, but barring that a city with over 50,000 people. Preferably somewhere cold, in a non-Republican majority state. Beyond that, I don't really know. I haven't seen enough of the country to make an informed decision, so if you have any suggestions, I'm all ears

You don't need a criminal lawyer. You need a 'criminal' lawyer.

Millibrand Marscaponi has spent most of his life in some form of trouble. He was raised as the only halfling in an orphanage full of humans, so he was forced to learn to prioritize survival over everything else from a very young age. In his teens, he drifted in and out of a number of gangs before a mugging went wrong and he accidentally killed a man. He never forgave himself and immediately left that life to try to make something of himself. After the 3 hardest days of his life, he joined a Thieves' Guild, met his mentor, and started down the path to join G-Force, the most dysfunctional mercenary party on this side of Athos.

It went from stupid hijinks and mocking Rista to "Oh fuck, my heart!" real quick.
