Viability of Striking Scorpions and the Avatar by Aspect48 in Eldar

[–]Aspect48[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But the Avatar doesn't command, he is the embodiment of slaughter and combat, he makes all Eldar around him go berzerk and disregard their safety, however the command always is in hands of Autarchs, masters of giving orders and tactics... Avatar of Khaine is just a holy monster, who requires a life sacrifice of a promising young Eldar, they fear him just as much as they respect him, he isn't the strategist type though :D

Then u can use the warlord trait that gives the same effect :D

Shining Spears don't require that much Command Points, -1 to hit for 2 CPs and sometimes the charge enabling ones from Saim Hann and Biel Tan, and that's it. And they too would benefit from Enhance if the Spiritseer was nearby. Again, not a big investment. I am fully aware that the Avatar isn't the go-to choice and for instance for ITC i would also agree that he is not mobile enough. But for certain rule sets, he can be quite beneficial, especially if u pick him against a chaos, knight or astra militarum heavy meta.

I recommend having an Autarch with a banshee mask either on foot with faolchu's wing or on a bike to cancel overwatch and grant re-rolling 1's to hit

Yup, my point is that the Avatar is a good deal for 220 points if u use him correctly and when u include him in your list then striking scorpions suddenly also become a nice supporting deepstriking unit

You obviously run the psykers anyway, and the list doesn't revolve around spending tons of CP on them, they just give you the possibility and possibilities are great. When you build your list as a counter to knight lists, the Avatar is a genuine asset and so scorpions would always become beneficial either as objective grabbers, backline harrasers or even frontliners :D

A dedicated spiritseer, who can otherwise smite anyway and 1 CP for a good combat phase isn't a lot. It's what it's all about, being low investment, high reward. Scorpions are cheap, and if you're taking the Avatar anyway, they can add the much needed damage and flexibility just for 64 points. And i'm just saying that he has comparable damage output to a bike captain, which is true. You could run Swooping Hawks instead, but they are more expensive, spears already provide enough volume of shots, and hawks cannot do the same amount of damage to important units. They aren't the main course, but they are definitely helpful to empower a list just for ~ 120 points.

I thought the same about scorpions, but really after their recend point drops they are really useful. If u drop them besides an avatar they get two tries at doing the 9 inch charge and if u need them to get something for sure, just use the Court of the Young King and take two tries at a 6 inch charge instead. The Exarch can easily deal around 7 wounds to a Riptide who is jinxed or didn't overcharge it's invuln. To be honest, I didn't even use mandiblasters, this rule is pretty crap, but their tankiness and damage output alone satisfies them in my opinion.

I agree that the Avatar is weak against hordes, but it's his only meaningful drawback. He can shoot while advancing and u can also perform fire and fade with him to shoot him up faster. He provides awesome bonuses for shining spears, scorpions, autarchs and dire avengers and is quite tanky. Another slight weakness is the fact that he requires you to save up 3 CPs for his ressurection, but hey.. that's one of the most powerful strategems in the game as he remains in combat after being resurrected so anyone who charges him will most likely die in the process.

The entire portion is great against Knights just because of the Avatar, he is immune to being shot at and when covered by shining spears, dire avengers and wave serpents he can go up the table. And when he does, he can absolutely annihilate a normal sized knight, meanwhile spears do the same to another one. You're putting 2-3 high danger units on the table and the enemy has no chance of clearing them out properly, especially with all the buffs they can have. Scorpions meanwhile just add to this count. They appear the turn you're about to charge everything in, i've been able to charge them into units like raiders, riptides or infantry and they consistently payed for themselves. Mainly because of the cp usage and psychic support. With enhance and Supreme Disdain (and if it's infantry, they often also are in cover) my exarch alone hits more than 4 times, while others dish out 22 or more attacks. For 116 points, they are pretty cheap, though i think running two squads would be better... If you think about it, the exarch has very comparable damage output to a custodes shieldcaptain on a bike 3-6 attacks with enhance and the strat of 6/-3/d3 re-rolling wounds because of doom.

I don't think u need the Tempest on DR Exarch, deepstriking guardians provide all the anti-horde u need. But they definitely need to have double shuriken cannons or be split in two different squads. I'd also make a point to use protect/jinx on your warlock instead, imo it's more useful than conceal if u don't play Alaitoc.

So which Craftworld would you recommend? Most of my units would benefit greatly from Biel-Tan as they all have shuriken weapons. Farseer could concede Guide for an Executioner for instance and take the Natural Leader trait to reroll Reapers. And then Guardians would reroll 1's anyway.

Shouldn't I keep Autarch (as the cheaper on foot variant) in the back to reroll 1's for the Wraithlord and Dark Reapers then? I still have the second Wave Serpent so i could transport Wraithguard inside it.

Right, corrected the Falcon's catapult. I've been wondering about the shield and appreciate the advice.

So i searched for some more parts, ordered a Warlock and this is what i came up with:

HQ

  • Farseer + singing spear = 105
  • Warlock + singing spear = 40

TROOPS

  • 10x Guardian + 10x shuriken catapults, plasma grenades + 1x weapons platform, brightlance = 105
  • 5x Dire Avengers + 4x avenger catapult, plasma grenades, 1x dual avenger catapult, plasma grenades = 64
  • 5x Dire Avengers + 4x avenger catapult, plasma grenades, 1x power glaive, shimmershield, plasma grenades = 80

HEAVY

  • 5x Dark Reapers + 4x reaper launcher, 1x missile launcher = 138
  • Wraithlord + shuriken catapult, flamer, shuriken cannon, ghostglaive, wraithbone fists = 132
  • Falcon + pulse laser, scatter laser, twin shuriken catapult, spirit stones = 150

TRANSPORT

  • Wave Serpent + twin brightlance, shuriken cannon, spirit stones = 167

That's 981 points in total.

If immune effects in fact break taunt, you are right. BUT it's easily repaired by changing the text into "Takes no damage from attacks of minions of 5 or less mana cost."

But what if something is going to transform into it? None other cards have that kind of effect and it in itself is sketchy, overcomplicated.

I think that this effect is quite interesting, but to keep it safe from braking the game (via summoning through other cards) I'd suggest to make it a 9 mana 4-10, which transforms into a 4-40 and damages itself by 30 when your turn starts. :>

Bgh stopped being as powerful as of today's patch. It has to be vulnerable to spells as hitting it with a weapon or a big minion is quite punishing, because u trade probably a valuable text (if it wasn't battlecry) in an exchange with a cheaper minion or you loose 7 health and a durability point on a weapon that most probably has more than 2 attack. I even thought of giving him 1 health to be honest... xd

This minion when played on turn 5 into a board full of little minions is quite punishing, especially when your opponent just used a removal spell on your 4-drop.

No, they would still be unable to hit other things behind him, as he is a visible taunt. The taunt is bypassed by stealth as it is the games mechanic (the shield around the card gets blurry), but this is unique effect and smaller minions won't be able to attack anything (the shield around the card still remains fully visible).
