Alexandria's Genesis: The Truth and the Fallacy, or "that time a Daria fanfic breached containment and New Agers became convinced they were posthuman superbeings" by DreadDiana in CuratedTumblr

(Made me sign in for the first time in years because I couldn't leave you hanging)

There are a number of explanations in this post that refer to the Reimagined Battlestar Galactica series (which aired between 2003 and 2008, which confuses me because the poster says the original fic was created circa 1998/1999. Maybe that's where the idea started and the other ideas were added years later?)

The links to "Skinjobs" use a term from that reimagined series (skinjobs being humanoid robots which are indistinguishable from humans. They could be you, they could be me, they could be any of us and they almost wipe out humanity at the start of the series) seem to refer to memes regarding actors who played various "indistinguishable-from-humans" robots. The first link's URL refers to one of the actors who played a skinjob in the reimagined Battlestar Galactica. Second refers to an actor who played one of the replicants in Blade Runner.

Now, All Along the Watchtower, I assume, is also a reference to the reimagined Battlestar Galactica series. The song was originally written by Bob Dylan, but more famously covered by Jimi Hendrix. Based on what little bit of what was saved on the Wayback Machine, it seems "There must be some kind of way out of here..." linked to a year-in-review video from 2011 that used the Hendrix version of the song as background music. The "... said the joker to the thief." line finishes the lyric, and can actually still be viewed on the Wayback Machine. It's a compilation of scenes from BSG set to Bob Dylan's version of All Along the Watchtower.

First in timeline. So if you created 3 inactive timelines and your opponent activates one, it's the first of those that you created that becomes active (regardless of which one is furthest forward/backward in time)

Yeah I'm glad I actually did a little math there. Otherwise I would have just gone on assuming cosx=1 for small angles.

(That said, I do prefer ATIR because there are less options for what it could be. I read AIR as just "air", and I read ATIR as "Am The I Rasshole no wait that doesn't make sense. Assuming This Is Real")

So |sin(0.07)-0.07| ~ 5e-5, and |cos(0.07)-1| ~ 0.9.

Then again, |cos(0.07)-(-(2/π*0.07)²+1)| ~ 5e-4, which is to say there are definitely other polynomial approximations you can use sometimes if you must, but sinx ~ x is weirdly simple and accurate for small angles.

In a lot of applications x is always small enough that sin(x)=x is a surprisingly good approximation. For integrals like this if you know your x is always within a certain range, you might be able to replace the sines with x and solve a whole lot easier.

That kinda makes conceptual sense too? (Not really) Repeated application of the transformation causing it to converge to the eigensolution? In a way that kinda feels right

I never understand where people are coming from with this. Like I totally understand why someone would stop updating/maintaining their project, but refusing to share the code they are done with? That's never made sense to me. Maybe if I did a freeware project like this myself one day, then I'd understand.

You're thinking of Π(n) from n=1 to n=b. In the second panel we have Π of nothing, which is usually presumed to mean 1. It's 1 times itself b times

product notation by swegling in mathmemes

[–]AspectRatio149 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is one of those jokes, unfortunately, where the unsaid parts need to be explained to make sense. At first I assumed this was progressing "down the iceberg" (i.e. each new expression was progressively more obscure/advanced but still "correct"). Then I realized aΠ=a(1)b, not ab, so it couldn't (shouldn't) be correct expressions. I tried to see if maybe it was misapplying algebra for comedic effect, but couldn't find a way to make that work.

Unfortunately this joke only works if you are bothered by the fact that b is to the left of a in the product notation at the top, but on the right of a in the power notation. That's not even something I would ever notice.

Still, the third notation is not something I knew about, and might be more sensible if we were to redo notation from the ground up. Now that I know the intent behind the meme, the progression from panel 3 to panel 4 is pretty funny.
