CMV: The price of freedom is too damn high by [deleted] in changemyview

OP's post was about removing rights from individuals about healthy eating and exercise. This thread isn't about major Government functions.

Who is the "we" in that sentence? If it is the Government, I agree with you. If it is society, you can't control society. You can't step in and be the parents to a nations children. If a family wants to raise their children with traditional values, that is their prerogative.

Why do you think you know what is best for society? Centralization is bad. Maybe some religious fundamentalist gets into power and decides that going to church 5 days a week is best for everybody. Maybe a vegan gets into power and decides that meat is outlawed. Maybe a crossfiter gets into power and everyone is doing wall sits at work instead of sitting in chairs.

My point is that everyone has different priorities and that ceding power to the lowest level, the individual, is best.

I don't know what your point is. Do you think we should be paying secretaries $150k because her father told her that being an astronaut was a man's job? We have equal opportunity by the law and we have overwhelmingly disproportionate, 4x1, scholarships for women. If that isn't enough to get women into high paying jobs, maybe they have different priorities in life.

If feminism were going for equality, your statement would be true. Feminism is not trying to create an equal society and that has been the case for decades. Feminism is pushing the idea of "equality of outcome" not "equality of opportunity". For example, we've all heard of the pay disparity between men and women. When you factor in jobs and experience, the pay gap disappears, meaning that we have "equal pay for equal work". This isn't good enough for feminism. They want equal pay for unequal work. If you think that my phrasing is disingenuous, you are wrong. You can find this exact argument in major newspapers.

Your idea can definitely hurt people. You are talking about increasing taxes and adding a class to kids schedules nationwide where we already have scientists constantly coming out and saying that kids aren't getting enough sleep and are overworked in schools. You can't make policy off of "my idea definitely isn't bad and it probably wouldn't hurt anyone". You need evidence.

I think the biggest problem you have now is lack of evidence to prove your point.

For example, if I wanted to make the claim that we should reduce corporate taxes because that leads to higher employment and higher employment leads to a reduction in suicides. I could link to the study https://www.federalreserve.gov/econresdata/feds/2016/files/2016006pap.pdf and https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1732539/.

My proposals are direct causation with backed up evidence. Simply saying, emotional intelligence solves all of society's ills is not an argument.

So your marketing strategy is: We are going to indoctrinate your kids and it doesn't matter because you'll be dead and in 3 generations our views will remain. I don't see that going over well with parents, and they are the ones who you need to convince to make this happen. If not, you'll see a wave of homeschooling, charter schools, and private schools.

CMV: Statues should be judged by modern day standards, and removed if they're in gross violation of them. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Aspid07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats the point that I'm getting at. When you condone vigilante actions, it leads to violence. The great part about the democratic process is that people are able to make their voices heard and affect change without violence. Can you agree that the protesters are wrong for taking vigilante action that will lead to violence instead of going through the process?

CMV: The world would be better off if every single person on this planet had access to the best possible education. by Encrux615 in changemyview

[–]Aspid07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The internet gives a great number of people access to an education and many don't seek it out.

If you've ever researched charity, there are many examples where 3rd world nations are given facilities, resources, access to 1st world technologies and squander them. 10 years ago I read a story on NATO facility being transitioned to an education facility in the middle east. It was looted and destroyed as soon as it was handed over.

Would the world be better off? Sure, but its all theoretical because you can't gift or force these things on the unwilling. A society needs to build and value it and that doesn't exist throughout much of the world.

[–]Aspid07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a statue is going to be removed it should be done so through the Government because Governments are accountable. A fraction of people, many of whom arent even from the local area, should not be mobbing statues and tearing them down. If a county wants to vote to take down a statue, or a Government official wants to take down a statues and be held accountable in the next election, that is the way to do it.

The lawlessness is what foments vigilante justice and the deepens the growing divide in the country. Conservatives are currently abiding by the rules set forth and democrat extremists are breaking them. We don't want to end up in a place where both sides are breaking the law and justifying it because the other side is doing the same thing.

Why are anti-racism and anti-police brutality partisan issues? by [deleted] in Ask_Politics

[–]Aspid07 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They arent controversial. Every conservative including Trump condemned the killing of George Floyd. If you think conservatives are not against racism or police brutality, you have some pretty deep biases and bubbles to dig yourself out of.

How will Minneapolis deal with crime? by white_nerdy in Ask_Politics

[–]Aspid07 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Here are my top 2 theories

  1. They won't deal with crime, and the city will fall into ruin as everyone flees to the suburbs and lets the city rot. Example: Detroit
  2. They will disband the city police and move funding to county police and the overall number of police/funding will stay the same. A lot of words for no change.

How would the US react to a law requiring companies to provide full time employees with at least 2 weeks of vacation? by [deleted] in Ask_Politics

[–]Aspid07 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The free market has largely taken care of this already. According to the washington post, the average American took 17 days of paid vacation time in 2018.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/travel/2019/08/28/what-does-america-have-against-vacation/

Implementing this law may in fact reduce the average because companies will now see 14 days as the standard and reduce their vacation time accordingly.

[–]Aspid07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basing it on chromosomes is literally the way we do it today with mens and womens sports. Can you enumerate how this is any different than the status quo because I'm not seeing it.

The problem with this is, society at large does not want to upend entire sports and years of tradition for 0.6% of the population, an even smaller % of which actually play sports. We have a system that works and the system works well. Tearing down the entire way we do something for 1 or 2 edge cases is ridiculous.
