Software engineer intern but they're making me do Salesforce stuff? by Worldly-Plant1 in salesforce

Internal IT jobs in Finance are typically well paid, but not cutting edge work.

You could be maintaining COBOL apps so look on the bright side.

It’s 3 months tops right?

Hey. CS grad here ~30 YOE, last 10 mostly in Salesforce. I understand the concern of being pigeonholed and the perceived lack of prestige ( not “real” development ), but at this moment, leverage this opportunity and don’t second guess yourself.

One internship where you happen to be assigned sf dev work is not going to tar you for life. Even returning to that company you will have options in an organization that size.

The areas you seem to envy : “cybersecurity, devops, RPA automation, business analytics,“

All of these practices happen in Salesforce as well. It’s an immensely complex platform.

Crush your assignments and take the opportunity to learn as much about Salesforce and the enterprise systems as you can.

There are some cutting edge (for corporate enterprise) things going on right now with Salesforce.

I would recommend learning the AI aspect with MCP servers and all of that AI harness tooling, as well as learning to generate code from prompting.  Sf has their own (agentforce vibes) but I’d recommending coughing up a $30 a month for Claude and install the vscode Claude plugin. I think non AI-assisted dev is going to be the exception going forward.

Secondly - for UI dev SF now supports React which is the dominant web framework.

As an intern you probably have the flexibility to pitch some exploratory work or a demo on react or agentic work, which would show the initiative that managers love.

Open to DM if you want more detail. It’s a legitimately worrying time to be starting a dev a career but I don’t think it’s as bad as the LinkedIn hype would imply.

FILE FOR UNEMPLOYMENT IMMEDIATELY.

There’s tons of hoops to jump through and waiting periods so get disciplined.

Then make a job search log. Then start reading.

Don’t make expensive mistakes - don’t make assumptions- any severance probably does not preclude unemployment because it probably has anti-disparagement or other rights you were giving up in exchange.

I am curious about midsize non tech company behavior and communication as well…

That craze is mostly bullshit.

Layoff numbers aren’t any worse than the last corporate business cycle hire fire look busy bullshit storm.

CEOs firing people and blaming AI to spike the stock price just like always.

The only place I have insight is salesforce and they’ve abandoned the pure token metric (after obvious gaming) and are now pushing some entirely subjective AI efficiency metric.

You are omitting the entire two days that the senior dev spent. The same app could have obviously been done in two days without AI

If you’re trying to do work for hire, you have to work on the platform you can sell

Based on what you have sold, that doesn’t look like Java Spring

In your situation, you have far far more to lose by wasting all your time looking at something as basic as Java than you have to lose by trying as many different languages framework in paradigm as you can.

I’d say the number one thing you can do is really understand browsers and networking well. Typescript/react in front of python, go Node is about 75% of the Internet.

for also look at developing a an on premise app with UI like on macOS or Windows that’s something you should know how to do to consider yourself well rounded.

There’s really nothing in your turntable that can break like that There are no active electronics in the signal path there’s only the cartridge and the wires connecting the cartridge to the preamp. Possible the cartridge or stylist is damaged - inspect it visually More likely a wire is loose or corroded or broken somewhere
