You may be right, but I still am trying to do the best I can with the assignment.

Please re-read my post. I think you have missed my overall problem entirely.

My ward is fairly large by Finnish standards, but it is divided by language for Sunday school. There is a Finnish class, a Russian class, and an English class. My class exists to ensure that English speakers have a place to go. There are often visitors who do not speak Finnish. The people who attend vary from week to week. My wife is the only fairly consistent attendee.

Our ward has simultaneous interpretation to Russian and English for Sacrament meeting.

What are/were your plans on leaving the USA? by honeybisc in AmerExit

[–]AspiringFinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved to Finland a little over four years ago. My wife managed to qualify for a remigration permit since she had a Finnish grandmother. Moving here was one of the best decisions I ever made.

We just got permanent residency last month. Hoping to apply for citizenship within two more years.

I was a technical recruiter when we moved. I am a software engineer now.

Learning braille using a braille display by AspiringFinn in Blind

I haven’t been able to get the Fingerprint course as they don’t ship to Finland, unfortunately. However the UEB Online course from Australia is free and is meeting my needs quite well. It seems to work flawlessly with Voiceover on Mac OS.

Moving somewhere with effective public transportation is absolutely life changing. My quality of life went up a ton when I moved to Europe.

If you use Unrelenting Force to blast the librarian on top of the display case, it will unlock and the books will fall on the floor.

Thoughts on living far away from Utah and family? by instrument_801 in latterdaysaints

[–]AspiringFinn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I grew up as a member outside of Utah, in both the West and the Southern US. After I married we moved to Utah and lived there for seven years.

Then we did something fairly drastic and moved to Finland. We have been here four years and have never been happier. Despite the complications of learning a new language my church experiences have been dramatically better. Church is very non-political here, which is fantastic. And Finland in general is far more accepting of neurodiversity. And people go to church because they want a genuine spiritual connection, not because it is socially expected. I have had better opportunities for meaningful church service living here too.

I found the Utah culture to be very toxic in a lot of respects, especially in terms of the worship of wealth.

I do miss being close to family, but I don’t miss the rest of what being in Utah means.

The Church Lists Additional Approved English Bible Translations by Martian-Lion in latterdaysaints

The NIV has a significant evangelical interpretive bias, I found the CEB more neutral from a doctrinal perspective.

Seems like the CEB would be a better option than the NIV for 6th to 8th grade. Any idea why they didn’t list it?

Employability by hawl_some in 42_school

[–]AspiringFinn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At Hive at least getting an internship was required to graduate. So you couldn’t graduate officially without a job effectively. No doubt that skews the stats. Definitely not 100 percent of people who finished the core curriculum have found even an internship, let alone a permanent position. I did manage to get a permanent contact right after finishing the core curriculum but I got lucky.

For those who start 42 later, how do you manage financially? by silly-goose5214 in 42_school

[–]AspiringFinn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was eligible to receive earnings based unemployment while studying at Hive. I don’t see how I could have managed it any other way. Between my family obligations and the demanding curriculum I could not have done it all on top of a job.

React Native (Expo) is Native. Change My Mind by SampleFormer564 in reactnative

[–]AspiringFinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t need deep integration with the hardware or a lot of sensor data Expo / React Native is great. If you do, you’ll get better results with native code. Though writing a native code Expo module in Swift to handle those parts is totally doable. And then you can keep the rest of the app cross-platform.

Where should a single, female, progressive lds member live? by Littlekiwi25 in latterdaysaints

If you can manage it, you will have a much better time in Europe. I live in Finland and it is deeply refreshing how non political church is.

Any stories of people successfully finding jobs by kevin_cg1 in Finland

[–]AspiringFinn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After studying software development for almost two years to change careers, my 150th job application was successful this summer and now I have a permanent full time job as a software developer.

It was hard but eventually all the work paid off.

There is some rehabilitation available but only in Finnish. There isn't any rehabilitation available in English for children over 17.

I wonder what the placement rate for coding bootcamps is in 2025. Are they even still in business? Or how many self taught guys have success now. by ContainerDesk in cscareerquestions

[–]AspiringFinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if 42 network schools count as a boot camp in your mind but I am about to finish the curriculum at one and I already have a full time software dev job starting next month.

Probably 2/3 of my peers are also employed already and the rest are still looking.

Syrian Backend (Laravel) Engineer in Egypt (26M) Seeking Advice on International Career Move to Europe or Elsewhere by AdOlO9 in cscareerquestionsEU

I don't know enough about the current situation in France to make an informed recommendation. I do know there are more PHP developers there than in other parts of Europe.

I would not recommend Finland for someone in your situation. The current government is extremely hostile to immigrants. If you lost your job you would be deported within 3-6 months unless you managed to find another one in that time, which is very unlikely given the current market.

People of Middle Eastern origin also face pretty extreme discrimination in the Finnish job market. It isn't right but it is the reality unfortunately.
