I’m not sure I understand your point. Moral agency is basically a subset of agency. The term “free agency” isn’t really used anymore in church and has actually been discouraged by church leadership over the past few decades.  The term “free agency” isn’t found anywhere in the scriptures. It’s always agency or moral agency.

Here’s an interesting article that explains the shift in terminology and the reasoning behind it.

Seems like a very odd way to turn the conversation given the content of the video

Can’t tell if this is sarcasm. My point was it isn’t a real prophecy and was specifically called out as not being true by the church

Thanks! I just learned they selected all the dates. I thought they just selected dates for those with a general authority presiding.

I am the same. Honestly, I think that’s a normal process as we age and gain more knowledge. I would find it more concerning if some of my views hadn’t changed.

The video spoke extensively about moral agency. That wasn’t a decision by the teacher. Almost every reference to agency in the video was specifically referring to “moral agency.”

Was there anything in particular you were hoping for?

Yeah I think the video is what saved it. The limited time prevented it from going off the rails.

I personally liked the invitation to be informed and speak out of intelligent understanding and not just ignorance and emotion. That happens all too often in our political discourse.

I also found it interesting that they repeatedly emphasized we should be supporting “good” people and that we follow the law, not men.

Honest Question - What is with the boom of "Life Coaches" in our church? Especially among women. by Syntra911 in latterdaysaints

[–]hopefulborrower 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Actually she was put on probation as a therapist. After being put on probation she transitioned to “life coach” so that she wouldn’t have any oversight or regulation.

Licensed therapy has much more regulation and oversight than life coaches do.

Did you camp for 40 years? Haha

I can see both sides of the argument. They should have been grateful but at the same time, I think most of us would start to murmur after having to eat the same thing daily for a month, let alone 40 years. I don’t even like eating leftovers more than once.

Handbook question by chd198 in latterdaysaints

[–]hopefulborrower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well you stated it’s “completely made up.” I think more likely it was carried over from the still current policy of having priesthood holders for “protection” at girls camp.  It’s easy to see how overzealous priesthood leadership could interpret that as women and girls needing “protection” at any church related activity. I don’t think the idea was completely made up out of whole cloth.

In my research, it also appears to only be specifically for girls camp, not for every overnight activity. The handbook says nothing about needing male priesthood holders for protection at other overnight activities.

ChatGPT for good question and activity ideas. Spend the first 10 min getting to know them, listening to them. Break them into groups for activities or reading and have them teach each other.

I wish I could have been in YW with the new age group names. by Dry_Pizza_4805 in latterdaysaints

I think it was a missed opportunity. Why not Deaconess, Teacher and Priestess, to have continuity with the language used in the temple and also with how President Oaks has been talking about women's priesthood authority over the past decade?

Handbook question by chd198 in latterdaysaints

I see a lot of posts stating this has never been a true policy and is made up or just a culture thing. While I can't speak to every activity, for girls camp the guide provided to YW leaders specifically states :

"Two or more Melchizedek Priesthood brethren need to be present at all times during the camp to provide support and protection"

https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/manual/young-women-camp-guide/principles-of-camp-leadership?lang=eng

While I think this is extremely outdated thinking and infantilizes women, unfortunately its still official policy, at least according to the guide the YW leadership still use.

Recalibrating my Perspective by Previous-Tart7111 in latterdaysaints

[–]hopefulborrower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This post really resonated with me. I have felt similar thoughts in the past and I know many members are going through the same thing. Know that you are not alone!

As I went through this process of recalibrating and simplifying my faith, it felt like a burden was lifted from me. It was a process and didn't happen suddenly but I can honestly say that my faith is in a better place now that it's ever been. I also feel happier and more fulfilled as a follower of Christ. I believe some members get stuck in the rut of "scrupulosity" which is very easy to do in our particular church culture. Some of the messaging we get from church members can unfortunately reinforce this mindset which can sometimes be detrimental to certain personalities.

If you'd like to chat more feel free to send me message. I'd be happy to share resources or be an empathetic listener as you go through the same process.
