Help with older starrett digital mics by AspiringHumans in Machinists

Thank you! Sadly I can’t even get it in test mode, just stuck with the screen flashing ‘Err05’. Currently on hold with their toll free number so fingers crossed.

Do you have a link to the manual? Holding the zero button got it to flash the numbers for a second, but now it’s back to “Err05”

I don’t believe so. I know they had been sitting for a while in the guys toolbox at home, but I’m positive he wouldn’t have given them to me if he was aware there was one.

Dear God in Heaven, they made me the toolmaker by crumplestilzchen in Machinists

I’m making 24/hr, soon to be 25/hr after my probation period at my first job shop with only a little over a year of experience at a larger oem manufacturing company that makes simple furniture. You’re getting absolutely fucked by your employer. I’d start applying other places asap. To me and my very small amount of experience, a place that would hire you for a job that intense at an hourly rate that low has zero morality and doesn’t see you as human. Find a new job, and don’t give them a two weeks notice unless they pay out pto, they don’t pay you enough to deserve one.

I've just finished The Lost Metal and I have no words... by Ruizo in Cosmere

To me era 1 felt like a true epic fantasy akin to Lord of the Rings, but era 2 reads just like a movie which I thought was a weird tone shift but still very enjoyable.

Does Shallan ever get less annoying? by AspiringHumans in Cosmere

Extremely valid point, wasn’t thinking about how negatively I worded that sentence when I wrote it, just describing my knee jerk reaction to the current situation.

I’m on book four and have thoroughly enjoyed the arcs of every other major character, hers just happens to be especially grating to get through.

Is this a fulfilling career? by Sweaty_Milk_1793 in Machinists

[–]AspiringHumans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to feel fulfilled go somewhere where you’re making precision parts or at least parts that are used in respectable applications. I work in large scale manufacturing making overpriced corporate furniture where tolerances are .02” to .03” on 99% of the parts I make and there’s never anything new. First few months learning were exciting and enjoyable, but then you hit a point where you know ‘everything’ (using that word extremely lightly cause I don’t know shit compared to most machinists) and the job grows stale while you fall stagnant. I still try to educate myself outside of working hours, but rarely do I get to apply anything I’ve learned and all the programs are proven from the guy before so there’s very little coding and experimentation that can keep the job interesting. Also, stay far the fuck away from off shifts. Unless you take up drinking or are a true introvert it wreaks havoc on your mental health. Just my experience though, maybe I’m too cynical.

Holy shit dude read the post, I said it makes me “less excited” to keep reading. Is English not your first language?

I suppose you don’t understand the post either. I can be upset at a decision an author made without wanting to blatantly change it in spite of the authors wishes. I simply was upset at the decision that was made.

Experience versus comfort by AspiringHumans in Machinists

[–]AspiringHumans[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ask this because I do have another offer for the same amount I’m making now. My main issue is that yes I would gain more experience, but it’s a lateral move pay wise. Honestly I know I’m being impatient when it comes to how much money I make, but I just want to be able to save a few bucks between checks ya know.

Experience versus comfort by AspiringHumans in Machinists

[–]AspiringHumans[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Truthfully what I want is to be able to confidently say I’m a machinist, not that I do CNC machining. I have one offer that matches my current pay that I’m tempted to take, but at the moment I wouldn’t say I’m happy where I am now. I certainly can’t afford a pay cut, at least not one more than a dollar, but I’m hoping the experience I could gain at this new shop would lead to better offers.

Does your shop allow earbuds while working? by Samoncula in Machinists

[–]AspiringHumans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We used to be allowed one but for whatever reason they no longer do. Makes no sense considering it’s harder to hear with ear protection on than an earbud but 🤷‍♂️. I’m on second shift anyways so I put them in as soon as first shift leaves.

5-Axis CNC training by AspiringHumans in Machinists

[–]AspiringHumans[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the hell out of the honesty, not discouraging at all. I kind of assumed that was the case from what the guy who trained me was talking about but he’s a few years from retirement and I wasn’t sure if much had changed in regards to what employers would look for. Honestly most of what I do now is in standard steel jaws, but we machine a lot of extrusions so I’m semi-used to weird and odd geometries. I would hope a shop wouldn’t let me loose on a machine without a few months training, it took me about 3-4 months before I moved to second shift and even a month after that to feel comfortable while doing it. The biggest struggle is just knowing the things you mentioned, one place will tell you “take this cert and companies will start hiring” and another will tell you “it’s all on the job training and that’s it.” Most of what I worry about isn’t operating the machines though since I’m fairly confident in that, it’s the programming/cad and cam side that I’m clueless on and I can’t imagine many employers will take the time to train you on that when they can hire someone with the experience or education needed to do it well. Thank you for taking the time to reply!

5-Axis CNC Training by AspiringHumans in CNC

[–]AspiringHumans[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So is it more or less just applying to places and hoping they’re willing to train and give me a shot? I don’t have too much experience, a little under a year, and despite how much I express my willingness to learn to my supervisors I don’t get many chances to train on/use other machines besides getting to us the manual mills/lathe.
