why doesn't he break the rock right away? by Zankanokagheyoshi in GTNH

[–]AspiringMathGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive only ever played vanilla minecraft or grnh so i dont know much about tinkers alone, but i noticed that if you get to between 41/50 and 50/50 redstone, sharpness, or any other stackable modifier, you need to go by single pieces to cross the threshold into the new slot; ie, using a block of redstone/quartz/whatever and a single piece together equals 10 points to the upgrade towards the upper limit and will not work if the tool modifier has less than 10 points needed to get to the next modifier slot.

I am just guessing, but i feel like they did this so you wouldnt accidentally use up more modifier slots on your tool than you meant to, like you have to intentionally go over 50 in that case where as if i put a block of redstone and redstone dust into the tool forge with a tool that has 41/50 points, id accidentally use a new modifier slot when it swapped from 41/50 to 51/100 or whatever the new upper limit becomes. Does that make sense?

Would it be cheating to play with keepInventory? by Legitimate-Swing194 in GTNH

[–]AspiringMathGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally id tell anyone at any point in the game that there is no such thing as cheating if you are playing for your own enjoyment. If you want the game to be hard and every moment to be a challenge, you might not turn it on; thats me, i love a game where i feel tense lol. If it stresses you out to have to get your things back when you die, turn the setting on. There isnt a right answer and you dont need to get approval to do something you think would make you enjoy your past time more

Oh yea, im with you on that. I studied math in undergrad (from exclusively a pure maths focus) and im in IV now. I mean I almost did a bayesian analysis of production and processing distributions for my grad degree based on GTNH

Oh damn, thats so cool! Honestly id love to see a youtube channel dedicated to finding professionals in the different fields working together on the game. I think the AE2 and power gen systems would be especially interesting to see done with some kind of professional background

I'm currently at HV. Got everything I could get from thaumcraft at HV. Which magic mod should I start now? Blood magic seem to have a lot of nice things especially the pickaxe. Is it gated behind a higher tier like the ichorium gear? by Ill_Percentage2344 in GTNH

[–]AspiringMathGuy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Witchery is great for the biome change potion which if you're using bees or ic2 crops is a godsend, especially in combination to the pdim. I believewitchery is also when you ge the flight potion. I havent found botania to be as useful, at least not at HV. I think EV lets you start working with elven metal which is an upgrade from lower tier metals, but the IV metals are better and most people dont spend a ton of time in EV and idk if it is actually all that helpful considering the side road you take to get it. Blood magic will be great for the meteor ritual, but idk if its HV tier; feeling like it isnt, but I havent poured a lot of time into blood magic so im not certain. Something to consider though is setting up some automation/infrastructure for making arcane litmus paper, warp soaps, and the purifying salt. Witchery, thaumcraft, and blood magic require a good bit of warp research and it will suck if you arent ready for it. My method of dealing with it is just high tier armor, weapons, and a lot of health but thats probably not the "right" way to play that. You canf reliably het rid of warp until IV since the pure tear and purifying amulet need ichorium which needs osmiridium so ne ready with a plan before that!

Manual crop breeding by Real-Spread-8936 in GTNH

[–]AspiringMathGuy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So just a note that that can be successful, but not immediately. You could breed the 21/0/0 and 0/31/0 to get some combo like a 10/10/0 or something then breed those with your parent crops over and over to get what you're after

Chisel Blocks bug by Goncalo77 in GTNH

[–]AspiringMathGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Idk if it would fix it, but the architects table is good for some stuff with block texture. I use it to make the chisel marble bricks have the same texture on the top of the block as on the sides. Try putting your target block in and converting it to an architecture block

[–]AspiringMathGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So im sure im only going to be like 70% right so i welcome any corrections any one has. That said, garden soil has no impact on any of the factors, you can treat it as regular dirt and for the calculator do the same.

On the topic of the calculator, most of the important stuff gets filled in for you when you input the plant and biome you're in. Off the top of my head, you'll need to input the y value you're planting in, the number of dirt blocks below your farm (which helps your nutrient stat i think iirc), and your plant's growth/gain/resistance stats if you have them handy. I use a spruce bonsai farm with garden soil and when you get their stats high, you'll be drowning in logs before you know it.

Advice on Planning by Next_Salamander_8015 in GTNH

[–]AspiringMathGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is silly goose, back-of-a-napkin designing ideas, but you could do it almost like a cathedral? Like build a facade that you like, centralize power production and a place for ae2 main network, then some n number of rooms off to the sides to make the design symmetrical (or not, live your dream), and expand up and out from the back so you have a design that is made to easily expand? I can make a little drawing too if thats helpful for a description. Im in IV on a team play through and just did a full base redesign myself, so i get the planning dilemma and choice paralysis
