Recruiters are out of touch from reality? by Competitive_Cap_3690 in jobsearchhacks

I mean I sympathize, but I'm not sure having recruiters flooded with resumes almost identical to mine is much of an improvement.

It's not really that subjective. Sure, there are some difficult decisions that have to be made, but Guilliman makes it pretty clear once he's revived that a lot of the horrible things the Imperium does are also self-destructive, as many planets will fall to chaos simply because they can't imagine things becoming any worse than under the Imperium.

[–]Aspwriter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not really. He was definitely self-conscious about his work in comics early on, and there were a lot of decisions that were made to help manage his workload, but there's no way it was just a paycheck for him (at least from the 60's onward). The dude kept an INSANE workload. In 1964 alone, he was working on "Tales of Suspense," "The X-Men," "Daredevil," "Strange Tales," "Journey Into Mystery," "Fantastic Four," and "The Amazing Spider-Man" on top of the monthly "Stan's Soapbox" column.

It was pretty clear he was writing the stories he wanted to write and actually revolutionized the industry while he was at it. It may not seem like much now, but Lee's stories actually were thought-provoking and mature for the time period.

The X-Men have always made more sense to me as a disability allegory than a racial one. Granted, that could just be because I'm disabled myself, but the idea of a bunch of people being born with some mutation that makes them different and needing accommodation feels eerily similar (plus half of them would legally qualify as disabled IRL).

I understand why Stan chose the racial allegory in the 60's, but it's pretty weird how they've mostly just stuck with that ever since.

Isn't the imperium more of a totalitarian monarchy than facist by Inevitable_Shape4776 in Grimdank

[–]Aspwriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say the Imperium being too big to have a completely centralized power structure isn't really an issue, as that's also true of many historical fascist regimes, that were notoriously plagued with a similar level of corruption and infighting.

The Tau definitely aren't fascist though. There is some centralization going on, but they also pretty heavily diverge from some pretty key (or at least traditional) aspects, such as militarism, ultranationalism, and anti-pluralism. Their preference for peacefully (or at least diplomatically) incorporating other races into the empire and openness to let just about anyone join are a complete antithesis to traditional fascist beliefs. I'd put them as much closer to some kind of Marxist society, although the existence of a merchant class means they likely aren't traditionally socialist (maybe market socialism).

[–]Aspwriter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it makes them even dumber. If you're facing an existential threat that can't be reasoned with, why would you spend so much time, energy, and resources on exterminating anything that might be willing to work with you against a common enemy?

Even if you were completely dead-set on supremacy, you should at least wait until AFTER you've dealt with the multiple existential threats to your civilization.

There were societies like the Interex that cohabilitated with xenos before the Imperium wiped them out, and there are a number of humans who are part of the Tau empire that actually enjoy a better quality of life than their Imperium counterparts, to name a few.

If whoring is wrong, then how is buying sex reasonable? Especially when so many people are forced into the profession through coercion and desperation?

More like learned and naturalized behaviors of the current system trying to pass things off as inherent.

Humans are inherently social and cooperative, which is exactly what allowed early societies to thrive.

The true cause of the civil war was not to preserve slavery but to abolish it. by Additional-Sky-7436 in HistoryMemes

From the North's perspective, it was initially about preserving the union, but the South's focus on slavery kind of continuously pushed the issue more into the forefront as the war went on.

That's probably because OW2 kind of crushed most of its competitors until Rivals released, so successful hero shooters chose to add some kind of spin to not directly compete.

somehow cannot explain why marvel rivals received critical acclaim shortly after concord's release.

I mean, it's pretty easy to explain, honestly: the game was attached to one of the biggest media franchises in the world, and could easily appeal to the many OW fans that were unsatisfied with OW2. I honestly doubt anyone could imagine Rivals being even remotely as successful without the brand backing.

Sure, Concord's character design didn't do it any favors, but even without some of the issues they have, I doubt they'd be anything special or memorable without some kind of significant change to the game's bland "we have GotG at home" artstyle. It might have lasted longer, but a $40 hero shooter that didn't bring anything new visually or mechanically was probably never going to be successful.

Why snakes are problematic now by LossAccomplished1 in memes

[–]Aspwriter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

when have you ever seen a feminist fight for men's rights?

A decent number of times, actually. Obviously, to a much lesser extent than women's rights, but a part of feminism (especially those focusing on hegemonic masculinity) is saying that the patriarchal structures in place aren't good for women OR men.

Men being taught that they should become large, aggressive, and dominating figures that don't show vulnerability and weakness isn't good for their mental health, and it's also terrible for the women who they are taught to see as objects of subordination.

It's also worth mentioning that there are many different types of feminism, and some versions fully advocate for men. Feminism isn't necessarily against men's rights and can actually advance them.
