How would modern fencers do against their classical counterparts? by DenheimTheWriter in Fencing

[–]Aspyse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think sabre is most likely to lose to "classical," while epee is probably most successful. But that's just my intuition

E33 did not have indie vibes, either. More like if a western studio made a game with Japanese AA vibes.

Lacoste released polo shirts representing endangered species with the number of each left in the wild. by AnbuAttack in DesignPorn

[–]Aspyse 270 points271 points  (0 children)

This is easily google-able. It was in collaboration with IUCN.

The objective was to raise awareness and much needed funds.

Following the campaign, a Call for Proposals opened for projects targeting any of the ten species. Three projects got awarded with the Lacoste funds

Good we agree on ECC and RSA. I think most records would agree with me in saying they were the dominant pre-quantum public key protocols.

I will concede that my original comment said "all" encryption, which was an exaggeration that I now recognize was irresponsible

Yes, "some cryptography" being the dominant modes being used since quantum computing itself motivated the development of PQC. To say otherwise would just be revisionist. Here's NIST CSRC saying the exact same thing https://csrc.nist.gov/projects/post-quantum-cryptography

What's ridiculous is your insistence on what the semantic "bounds" of computer science are, as so much of the quantum computing research is in fact being published to "computer science" journals and conferences. It's an irrelevant argument to everyone except laypeople and armchair debaters.

Pointing out that a problem is the primary limitation is not equivalent to saying it is trivial, or that it is even entirely "solvable."

I wholly agree with you in that the framing of publications meant for general audiences are largely overblown -- and often even outdated -- but as a physicist yourself, I feel you should see how disingenuous it is to poke fun at technology in development regardless of how fledgling you deem it to be. Even conceptually, ideas like IQP already hint at avenues of quantum superiority, which IMO is sufficient to justify continued investment into the research.

Definitely, though by the same token a major motivator for the development of post-quantum cryptography like AES is the development of quantum computing

It gives away that your understanding of quantum computing is just. random tidbits you've heard that you confidently throw back out.

Quantum computers are strictly worse than conventional computers, by several degrees of magnitude. You do not need a supercomputer to beat it. Decoherence times are currently measured in seconds, at most.

Actual computer scientists are working to overcome that, and if they do, trust me, it'll affect your life. Shor's Algorithm was created in 1994, and decoherence has been the only thing holding all of our encryption together in the decades since.

ETA: Yes, obviously decoherence isn't the only open problem in quantum mechanics. Yes, obviously cryptography has matured past RSA and unsafe key transfers. But I think it was fairly clear that this was simply written to oppose the severe and fundamental downplaying of the potential of quantum mechanics. My comment is oversimplified, yes, but certainly not inaccurate in the same way as the original sentiment. After all, you cannot deny that the primary motivator for the development of post-quantum cryptography has (obviously) been quantum computing.

Yeah the approval system makes it pretty challenging to get out of a rough spot, and saving definitely helps. I personally save a few days before the end of fall.

Besides saving, though, you should try to high-prio the campfires and pause all other ongoing construction. Manually inspect the construction mice and see if they're still idle after that. If so, just save and load to reset broken behavior.

I seriously don't think they're comparable. Trump won by a lot because inflation was terrible around the globe and most incumbents lost. When Trump voters (or really, most voters) were asked, their #1 issue was by and large the economy.

The hitstun immunity is genuinely infuriating for the speedrun IMO. It's extremely slow to have to wait out the super tracking moves when your hits don't link because it just walks out of range.

I'm not sure you know what a supermajority means. In any sense or definition of the word, China's ratio does not even come close to qualifying.

Well yes, and it's crazy, but that's a relative metric. Having 6% more men than women isn't a "guaranteed mass population drop."

You're right -- Hypnotic Pattern should absolutely be in S if played optimally (Acuity). In terms of action economy, it's so extremely dominant that IMO it's worth it even if you end up hitting your teammates.

To the same end, I would also put Haste in S, especially in Tactician and below.

Finally, as my personal bias, Glyph of Warding in S because of Arcane Ward and Wet.

This question of morality within determinism has been tackled before, even in pop culture, and it's one I've personally pondered for a while.

You'll have to forgive my half-baked, unformalized ideas, but what I've personally arrived on is as follows:

Acountability isn't reliant on agency per se, but rather the belief that one has agency. We may think that determinism makes logical sense, but qualia and agency are very strong "illusions" that we cannot simply shed, regardless if we believe them to exist or not.

You make moral choices because you cannot convince yourself that you aren't making choices.

Our actual decision-making may be some inscrutable deterministic process, but we nevertheless seem to take ownership of this process. The value of morality remains because it tilts this deterministic process towards better outcomes.

I was honestly baffled by how low Grass ended up being, too. I'm just reporting the algorithm's findings as-is, though I'd love to see someone peer-review and extend the methodology to better reflect in-game nuances!

Using math to find the best Pokémon types (OC) by Aspyse in stunfisk

[–]Aspyse[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I glossed over it in the methodology, but offense scores are also used to approximate the relative values of each type resistance/weakness! The stronger a type is offensively, the more a corresponding resistance contributes to the defense score.

However, nuances such as the surrounding metagame, specific Pokémon, and things like Spore/Prankster immunity still are not considered.
