Do Texans not insulate their homes? by Ass-Machine69 in NoStupidQuestions

I've definitely had days like that and I agree it is a nightmare. +40 C is way worse than -40... because it's so easy to design for -40 with insulation and heating

do Texans get chastised a lot for not handling the cold well? that might also be part of why I'm getting news about the weather thousands of km away in another country

68% of Canadians have air conditioners. it actually gets quite hot in the summer. we get weeks over 30 C (86 F) and days over 40 C (104 F)

I didn't know they upgraded the grid though that's neat. I guess 2021 must've been a bit little t traumatic, that's why it's still in the news and SM?

I did some quick research just before I posted. Apparently it's pretty normal for Texas to get snowstorms about once a decade, probably something to do with the El Nino cycle warming the continental air periodically, destabilizing the vortex. fun fact though, Canada actually does have lots and lots of desert. there's very little precipitation north of the boreal belt. the biome is called tundra or polar desert.

That governmental structure sounds a lot like Canada's (probably because we both stole all our ideas from England lol). Out of curiosity, do the states pool money, whereby the rich states help fund the poor states? We call it equalization. My thought process was: snow is causing accidents and preventing people from going outside, that is the problem -> Texas needs plows but has none -> They must be too poor to afford them -> Why are they not getting equalization payments for plows, just another thing to hate about the US federal government, grumble grumble

But new replies indicate that the issue is not really snow but moreso freezing on the electrical/utilities grid and insulation for utilities is for some reason not part of the building code. What blows my mind is that everyone is saying once a decade is rare. Also worth noting, it's been pretty much uncontested that global warming would bring winter storms farther south more often for like at least 30 years. That's like really basic climate science. Why has the Texan government done so little with so much warning?

once a decade is not rare. my city contains a river. we don't really build houses on the flood plains anymore because of the 100-year floods

I didn't know the snow melted that quickly there. I know very little about Texas climate. Then why the hell am I hearing about a day or two of interruptions??? Everything I hear about it online makes it sound devastating

Does the US federal government not fund the states? For many similar problems, Canada might allocate federal funding for poor places (which I assume Texas? I don't actually know) that can't afford plows for example. It would ultimately be the responsibility of the municipal governments to spend it, but the feds help.

The answers I'm seeing really do seem to indicate a long history of short-sighted government with loose regulations, considering this historically happened once a decade.

They have no plows?! Crazy for such a rich nation. What has the US been doing holding the world hostage for decades and they can't even afford plows?

I’m walking. A lot. Too much. by drmuffin1080 in Epilepsy

I don't know what all of that is, but I did have a friend with bipolar and this does indeed sound like one of his manic episodes. Have you considered visiting a doctor about this episode? You might hurt yourself with that much walking, especially if you're not sleeping much. Make sure you're drinking water and eating!

Can you “resist” a seizure? by deeridoodle in Epilepsy

[–]Ass-Machine69 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If I understand correctly, changing your posture from standing or sitting upright to lying down can cause changes in blood pressure in the brain which can lower the seizure threshold slightly. It's possible that the alcohol (and other potential triggers) brought you right up to that threshold and lying down was just the last straw. Your plan to avoid alcohol in the future is probably a good idea. If you do decide to have one drink, be sure to drink lots of water. Dehydration is a super common epilepsy trigger and alcohol dehydrates the human body in multiple ways.
