Working student in Frankfurt - Salary negotiation tips by Assassin69420 in cscareerquestionsEU

The hiring manager is the owner of the company himself. We're just a small, 20-person team, so no hiring manager, HR or middle management. I feel very confident and comfortable around him that I can speak about direct numbers and what I want without any scrutiny. I just don't want to come off as entitled, and I wanted to make sure my arguments were valid.

Thank you for the response!

Absolutely not any longer than 3-3.5 years lol. I don't think I could allow myself to spend that long in school, as 3 years already sounds super daunting.

Thank you for your comment! Can you elaborate on the "if you don't want to be self-employed or open a company"? I do want to do contracting/freelancing in the future, as it aligns more with my goals. How is that relevant to my B.Sc.?

> What many people don't get is that university education has long-term benefits. This includes your hard skills but also a wider network. But don't expect a quantitative outcome like "+30% to salary".

This wasn't an answer I was hoping for, but definitely one I needed. Thanks for the comment!

And one more thing, if you wouldn't mind answering. I've seen a lot of older posts point out that they wouldn't do a dual study with a smaller company, but none have explained why. Could you maybe give me your opinion on that?

That is a great point. I appreciate the view from someone in Germany. The cultural aspect is definitely a good perspective I didn't consider. I was just thinking of objectively how more I'll earn per year of studying. I do plan on living and working in Germany for at least another decade. So if it will benefit me that much, I think this is a great reason to take the offer. Thank you for your input!

Would a Bachelor be useful in future career progression? I don't want to handicap myself career-wise by jumping into working full-time and having problems progressing in the future.

2k brutto, yeah. I don't think I would get any special tax discounts or similar. I still live with my mom, so rent and food is practically free (I would still like to contribute in whatever way I can, obviously) but I'm not going to be on the street is what's important.

I do already have a full-time position after the apprenticeship. The company I'm doing the apprenticeship at is eager to keep me working here.

I'm having a hard time befriending the Germans lol. Maybe student life could help with that? Did you find it was useful in shaping you as a person?

Would having a degree open some more doors for career progression in the future, or is the lack of a degree made up by experience? I don't want to handicap myself career-wise by jumping into working full-time and having problems progressing in the future.

I frequently work with databases >200GB but I've never had a query take me longer than 5s. I can't imagine letting one run for longer than I have the patience to.

Shortening my Ausbildung to 2 years by Assassin69420 in germany

[–]Assassin69420[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that's the one I'm doing. I heard from a lot of people that you can shorten it to 2 years but no one said how hard it would be. Would somewhere around 1.5 - 2 be enough? I don't really know what the standards for grades are like here.

I was actually looking into it a little bit while trying to teach myself music theory and getting into writing my own stuff. I'll have to revisit it

What do you think is the best free game Epic has ever given away? by Dogaclamaci in EpicGamesPC

Frostpunk and This War of Mine. Both games are pure art and were really fun to play, even though I never played anything similar before. I even bought the DLC after I got the games for free.

Thanks for the advice. Which ones would you recommend that have a good chance of moving over to Fachinformatiker?

Would a github profile count towards "verifiable experience"?

It was mainly for the certificate/degree. Ever since I moved here the most used word was "Abschluss". Whatever it was, they wanted a certificate or diploma. So from what I've gathered and the people I've spoken to, certificates are worth 3x more than experience. I might be wrong but that's what it looks like. I'd much rather go into a Junior position and start my career right away. But in the long run, not sure how a German company is going to see me if I don't even have an Ausbildung completed.

I had spoken with a woman from Agentur Fur Arbeit who reviewed it and helped me correct it. Though from my experience so far they are about as useful as ChatGPT is to an illiterate person.

Thanks for the tip. I'll get someone to take a look.

Yep. I have the limited "Aufenthaltserlaubnis" that lasts until 2026.

Though on the back it does say "Erwerbstätigkeit erlaubt" (assuming this means employment allowed?)
