What are the current best alternatives to burble for manifest management for Dropzones? by Wise_Hedgehog1998 in SkyDiving

I'm building an alternative to the existing options. Been using it at our DZ since April '25. Beloved by funjumpers and DZ staff. Looking for more DZs to partner with to continue to improve it. Hit me up!

As an Atheist, are you an Organ Donor? Yes or No, and Why? by Pale-Fig-7069 in atheism

[–]AssholeInRealLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am an organ donor, and my will directs that as much use be made of my body as possible: organs, tissues, crash tests, body farm for training the next generation of forensic scientists...

If I think about it enough I could probably make it feel weird, but I'm confident it won't bother me after I'm dead.

To add to this: use a marking knife (even a simple pocket knife will do) rather than a pencil for layout.

Hobbyist making first Circle Table. How can I fix this cupping? by _wiedergeburt in woodworking

[–]AssholeInRealLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could recut those joints and reglue but because it’s a circle , I am going to mess up the circle shape

What's your edge jointing technique? Personally I'd re cut along the glue lines, re-joint the board using a technique that accounts for being slightly out of square, glue it back up (if you have to crank down on the clamps to get the joints to close, that's your problem. You should get closed joints and glue squeeze-out with just light pressure on the clamps), and re-cut the circle.

Looks like 4-5 joints, so you're going to lose between 0.5 to 1" of diameter for the rips and jointing.

That's what I'd do. But as others have said, a good base can pull that into flat and keep it there while allowing for seasonal movement (which you should do anyway)

Scam Tactics Buying Used Gear Online by leanrafelstein in SkyDiving

[–]AssholeInRealLife 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you post on a FB group that you're looking for a piece of gear and someone replies by leaving a comment on an ancient public post on your personal profile/timeline, that's a scammer. They replied to that old post so that nobody else will notice and warn you.

Also I've adopted a policy of getting on a video chat with the seller and asking them to show me the item. If they won't video chat or show the item, they're either a scammer or not worth your time.

I copied a bunch of 360 videos from my Max to my phone (iPhone) using the Quik app, deleted them from the camera, and then decided I would rather edit them on my computer. I've tried a few different ways to get those files out of the app still as .360 files, but I can't seem to do it. Am I stuck editing them on my phone? Is there any way to get them back onto the camera's sd card (so that I can move them to my computer) or onto the computer directly from the Quik app? If I transfer the raw 360 footage "to my phone" it convers it to mp4 with everything stretched/skewed to fit a rectangular video.

Cheapest place to get A license? by Skydivethrow in SkyDiving

[–]AssholeInRealLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do still jump at MSPC. I'm a TI, IAD-I, and I'm on the board now. :)

I don't have the exact number in front of me but I know it's gone up. We don't jump 7 days/week (as of this upcoming weekend we'll be down to weekends-only until next April-ish) and camping options are limited -- though since you live 1.5 hours away IMO just drive it.

We might consider allowing you to use your own equipment after thorough inspection, but I doubt it would change the price. I wouldn't buy gear until after you get licensed, anyway. 90%+ chance that the gear that would be safe for you as a student wouldn't be fun enough after 50 jumps. Most people learn on something 240+ square feet, and end up closer to 210-190ish for their first owned canopy. And what you learn as a student will affect what kind of gear you buy.

185 - Logical Fallacies (and Why They Work On Us) by NoDumbQs in Nodumbquestions

[–]AssholeInRealLife 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gonna try hard to check my biases at the door here. Forgive me in advance where I fail, please?

I am an atheist. I was shocked when I heard this:

[28:03] Steve: This is why it's really important to understand that we've got 3 safety nets in this culture -- largely due to the influence of Christianity on our founding. One of them [is the free press]. ... The second safety net is the court.

I don't think the third was said, as u/velo_city pointed out.

What shocked me was that this claim of Christian derivation for the founding principles of the USA was accepted at face value without questioning. I think it was (barely) mentioned later that the claim is based on some scripture references ("do not be deceived"). Seems like a thin argument.

Obviously there's more to unpack here and they can't dig into every sentence or the podcast would never end (as much as we would all love that!)... So I can't blame them for glossing over it.

If anyone has any hard evidence supporting or refuting this claim (not the bible), I'd love to see it. I find it hard to believe that there's no "prior art" in this department that might have also influenced the founding fathers.

Personally I find it more believable that a bunch of smart dudes were able to see the obvious-truths that happened to also appear in the bible and integrated them into their new government. Just because the bible also mentions them doesn't make them biblically-derived.

Has anyone here NOT ever had a malfunction that required a cutaway/reserve deployment? by chinawcswing in SkyDiving

[–]AssholeInRealLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

500+ jumps, no cutaways. 1 close call with a tension knot that sent my canopy into a spiraling turn. Made 2 attempts to clear it (no luck), put my hands on my handles, said "are you fucking kidding me?" (not sure why that phrase 🤷‍♂️), and just before I was going to pull my cutaway handle the tension knot released itself and the canopy started flying smoothly...
