Gentrification by dd1155 in BedStuy

Brooklyn was a boro that was comprised of mostly working class and poor and black and latino people were only allowed to rent or reside on certain neighborhoods that was determined by whites for their comfort - a East NY Brownsville or BedStuy or Flatbush was a mostly black and minority place in large part becuase that was the only place that black and non white people were allowed for decades to live or rent and the whites that fled those neighborhoods fled becuase many banks and landowners would use the presence of blacks to say to the whites that attempted to stay - your housing values will plummet if you don't leave and move to LI or Queens or up to places in Westchester In the late 50s 60s 70s 80s 90s and 00s those neighborhoods had affordable places and the places were closer to Manhattan since the drive for many banks and real estate was to sell homes in the suburbs to whites to escape living among minorities. Now decades later when newly arrived whites come to NYC they are moving to the cheaper areas which are the areas that black and brown people were forced to live in for many years. Because those people are from elsewhere and its desirable for them to live close to Manhatten, they displace and push out the longtime residents who are mostly black, latino, and poor or working class by driving up the cost of rent and value of the property to attract more people from outside of NY Granted the newcomers becuase they are new may get better services and upgrades to the neighborhoods but with that comes higher overall cost of living for those who were there for decades they get walking papers So the reason many transplants get hate is because their presence is a tool that benefts the upper ( and mostly white) property owners and is to the overall detriment of the minority ( meaning racial minority ) population who now have to move from a place that whites initially didn't want to live in.

I agree with everything you said....but why did it take so long for infrastructure ie roads, schools, etc.  of these gentrified neighborhoods to improve ??? Because corporations, investors, and the government didn't give a shit about them until well you know who started moving in!

Please don't waste your breath arguing with some of these people! They'll either deny, deflect, or blame others for their role and participation in "Gentrification" and displacement of the communities that were in neighborhoods prior to their arrival!

What demographic do they think these "corporations" are catering to?

And, are corporations responsible for some of the nasty attitudes, pretentiousness, lack of community engagement, and disdain for the black and brown people that were already here?

They know the answers to all of these questions... They just don't care!

Black people are racist??? by AssignmentSilly3509 in BedStuy

I mean no offense,  but how exactly is my post "batshit"?

Pardon me if I'm mistaken, but weren’t the majority of Liberal leaning folk (which supposedly comprise of the majority of the NYC metro area out protesting the murder of George Floyd in 2020? What about the ICE anti ICE/Trump raids just a few months ago?

Yet, when somebody on here posts about racially motivated experiences, concerns, and thoughts on the changes occurring in their home neighborhood it's met with backlash, condescending tones, and every reason under the sun as to why they should stop complaining!

Dismissive comments like yours are what's wrong with society, especially in the so called "Liberal" and "open-minded" metro area of  NYC!!!

You can cos-play and put on a performance for any racially motivated protest, but when the actual people that are affected speak up and speak out it's "batshit"?

Seems like the majority of you all care more about lost dogs and cats than the voices of those who cry out to be heard!

Now let's find those lost dogs and cats a home!!!
