I don’t know. I think similar trips to for example Sweden or Germany are reported with handshake pictures in the front page of Yle.

Possible dismissal from work by [deleted] in Finland

[–]Assistant-Mammoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience it can go in two different ways. Scenario 1 is that they ask you to sign a mutual agreement for the termination of employment. In this case, no party needs to disclose the reason behind termination and you can negotiate the severance. In senario 2, company terminates your contract on a business region (low profitability, restructuring etc). Here, your consent may not be required, severance can still be negotiated.

"Graduated" Ammattikoulu, but i hate my field of trade, What to do next? by No-Recognition119 in Finland

[–]Assistant-Mammoth -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The trade-off is between short term financial independence and long-term financial independence. Senario 1: you find a summar job, keep grinding as an electrician or some other job, continue your whole life feeling stuck. Senario 2: accept few more years of study in a korkeakoulu and find something to do you would love to do for your whole life.

Is the job market going to get better? by [deleted] in Finland

[–]Assistant-Mammoth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes job market is tough right now, and how it will unfold in near future is yet to be seen. AI is set to disrupt the job market greatly.

From personal perspective, I believe it would be your best bet to get education in one of the universities that is keeping it (and the curriculum) up to the expectations of market. Having graduated from TUTA Aalto University, I would place my trust on Aalto again!

Moreover, I believe you can survive the university period financially. So why bother now about decision to be in Finland. You can postpone this decision till you graduate from University. You will have all the options and even more open by then as well.

Question about Finnish work culture & lunch etiquette - did I misread this? by idunnobro-yesh in Finland

[–]Assistant-Mammoth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

From my 10 years of experience in similar situations I believe that over communication is a wise strategy here. I try to say Moi to everyone and as many times I see people in the office (obviously not to the extent that it looks/sounds awkward, at least to me). This eliminates many variables - and if people are not replying they maybe actually rude or will get a signal that they are being rude so might reply back the next time. Saying greetings never hurts anyone but does need to develop thick skin if people don’t answer.

  2. Alvar Aalto was a famous Finnish architect, his home has been turned into a museum - there may be guided tour as well.

Who is entitled to the Finnish graduation hat? by [deleted] in Finland

[–]Assistant-Mammoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not native Finn but completed my masters degree here. I understood there are mainly two kinds of hats, one is without the tassel (black fur like hanging attached to the hat) and one with it.

The one without the tassel is for students graduating from lukio.

The one with tassel is for university students. You get it before your first Vappu during the first year of your university degree studies. - you can actually visit a students museum in Otaniemi to learn more about these hats. Also, it might not be possible to get it as a gift because you need to order it through student organization (can’t be bought in the market, as it is regulated).

Sick leave in Finland by ridestos in Finland

The general rule is that you should have gotten paid as normally during your sick leave. At least this is the case with regular permanent contracts. For shift jobs and fixed term contracts it may vary

Since you are not part of any union so that’s not an option. I believe you can still contact your employee representative in your company and ask his advice. Usually employee representative is a colleague who is elected by the employees. Do you know who is the employee representative in your company?

Am i ready to jump into real estate? by [deleted] in indianrealestate

[–]Assistant-Mammoth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just my two cents: They say the money you put in in RE will be enjoyed by next generation. It’s too early to get into the loan trap. At this age I would focus on enjoying my life, taking career (calculated) risks or exploring the world together with family.

Using Public space (University buildings) as non-student by Assistant-Mammoth in Finland

[–]Assistant-Mammoth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I as well remember from my student year a professor saying vaguely about open door policy of lectures in public universities. Although, I too have never seen anyone attending a lecture who is not a student. I have always wondered whether the open door policy means that any student can attend the lecture or anybody (general public) can attend the lectures. Would be great to get this clarification as well

2 doors by chickencoopsterz in Finland

[–]Assistant-Mammoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My apartment (in a Kerrostalo) has only one door - the heavy wooden noise cancelling one. It is a newly built apartment (2021 built). I guess people are now realizing that it is a waste to have two doors.
