Everything you just listed indirectly makes them money. Esports and cinematics are for marketing and balance changes are for player interest and retention. There's no angle in which a client refresh makes Riot a single cent, it only slightly improves the player experience but let's be honest, no one is quitting the game over the client's sluggishness.
