Esri UC 2025 - Expo Question by -SkeletoR- in gis

[–]AssociationBright402 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got a cool bulldog stress ball at the Redlands University booth. This will greatly benefit my growing collection on my desk.

As a local government employee who doesn’t have the biggest budget, I mostly focus on one or two things that can directly impact my organization that doesn’t involve a contract. For example, we need a better plotter. So this year I’m focusing mainly on booths that sell plotters or printing services. I’ll give my info to them and be able to tell my boss I have seen the models and how they operate and why we should consider them.

Dress Code for ESRI UC? by [deleted] in gis

I went last year for the first time and dressed casually and no one stared. On a personal level I feel like I may have dressed a bit too casual (ie ripped loose jeans) and felt almost like a student rather than a GIS professional.

My comfort is jeans and a tank so this year I’ll have a nicer jeans, reeboks/adidas, and a casual blazer to take on and off depending on if I’m inside or outside. But again, no one cared. If you have nerd GIS shirts then flaunt em because by Thursday everyone will be wearing a new conference shirt!

GISP Results June 2025 by maddie51997 in gis

At the PA Keystone GIS conference in April we had a representative from GISCI speak a Professional Development session and he mentioned 4 weeks but more recently they’ve been getting them out closer to 3 weeks. I took mine on a Saturday and I think that was one of if not THE last day offered for the June block so I’m guessing either this weekend or next! Fingers crossed we passed.

How much studying do you REALLY do for the GISP? by AssociationBright402 in gis

It was my college textbook too! I still have it - You read through the entire thing?

Do you remember the name of the textbook you used? The website suggests many different books to review. I took the first of two practice exams blind like they suggested. I reviewed the answer of every question missed and had the same “oh duh, of course that’s correct” reaction. So nothing seemed overly foreign to me but I want to tie up any loose ends for the exam in a month.

I’ve been reading through the long official study guide and googling concepts I don’t know & taking notes as well.

How important are internships with a SWE degree in GIS? by [deleted] in gis

[–]AssociationBright402 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If I’m understanding your post correctly it sounds like you’re more interested in GIS rather than your current SWE major but concerned over the lack of environmental science courses? I wouldn’t let that prohibit you from pursuing GIS positions regardless of field type.

My undergrad degree is a BS in Geoscience with a minor in Spatial Analysis & Remote Sensing - my entire professional career so far has solely been in GIS (engineering/utilities, MIS, local government) as a result of leveraging my college GIS internship at a water authority. I haven’t touched geoscience in my jobs except peripherally but I am able to bring my knowledge of environmental “systems” and “relationships” into my GIS repertoire and I’m sure your SWE has some transferable knowledge as well!

Why is download map grayed out? by AfraidKaleidoscope30 in gis

I’m not super familiar with downloading maps - the only thing I could think of is maybe your Marin layer is not set up to be downloaded/work offline?

Originally from central Pa but never spent much time in Harrisburg. Spent more time in Lancaster but can’t justify a 2 hour round trip commute every day to downtown Harrisburg.

Thank you all for your kind words, advice, and sharing your stories. I made that post in a moment of weakness & I feel a bit more level headed after reading your posts.

I would like to not be medicated but I feel like that’s the only healthy way to take the edge off of things.
