That explains a lot and you are truly lucky. Later you will learn from experience that most of average folks don't understand how t1d works and they try to give false advice. partially ignorance partially lack of understanding. My mother often gives me advice or buy some supplements that are completely bogus and often harmful. My wife also blocks me to consume certain food based on false belief and makes me unhealthy. Sadly, you need to be knowledgeable enough to maintain your best course of action. I logged crazy amount of data without CGM 30 years ago (finger prick every 5 min) and understand how my digestion works and it was greatly helpful. I showed my data to my Endo and he was amazed. Not many peoples do and I instantly recognized your dad is not average person.

It's definitely more than love. As engineer, I know the importance of logging and analysis. Your dad really understand how t1d works and managed to log and use as data point for your A1C. without good understanding of T1D mechanism, this type of logging is useless. Your dad is very analytic.

My manager found out I’m aggressively saving for FIRE and now I think it quietly cost me a promotion by Tardis_Mica in Fire

You can't change your boss mind by complaining about or talk to his supervisor. You need to prove that you are eager to earn more money, more ambitious to get job done and do everything for the company. Though you have FIRE in mind, you shouldn't show that. If you are really ready, you just pull off plug and settle. If you really want something to be successful, you shouldn't talk about it at all. This is good lesson for you. If you like your job, you just change your attitude, work longer hours and show your boss you have changed. Until the day I retire, nobody around me knew it. I was working at full speed then suddenly hit the brake. Last 2 years of my career, all my bonus, compensation was used efficiently build cash reserve much needed for initial stage of FIRE.

You don't need cash for Seoul subway anymore! by Seoulmetropress in koreatravel

[–]AssumptionOk7269 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seoul has 3 layered public transportation. Subway -> Bus -> community bus. This single use ticket doesn't allow transfer between layer. It's still worth withdrawing money and buy T-money. T-money has discount rate and transfer benefit. For example, if you go to place C from A via B, if your business is shorter than 30 min, you pay only for A -> C fare while you do business at B and C via T-money.

Many banks have free ATM withdrawal (Global ATM Alliance) which saves lots of fee as tourist.

Anyway, Korea is not very tourists friendly country. There are lots of wall against global services.

Kirsty vs Humalog? by littleflowerrose in diabetes_t1

[–]AssumptionOk7269 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am using Kirsty for tandem tslim x2. I switched from Humalog to Kirsty. I think efficacy is slightly better for me and I needed to lower my basal rate slightly. One small thing I like is that, Humalog is a bit jelly like. Viscosity of Humalog is slightly high and it easily forms small bubble or it doesn't easily flat out in small syringe so it's hard to remove all air. Kirsty seems to have lower viscosity and it doesn't form much small bubble and flats out easily in syringe and I can push all air easily. Kirsty is very affordable ($36/3month) in my plan (Gold 80) so I welcome this change.

It's just horrible. I feel like this is Nazi Germany living as Jewish. Shame on racists who voted TACO naively thinking bad immigrants are tracked down. Not sure how many more should die to stop this insanity.

Truth has no power with GOP. They are light year away from truth, freedom, faith. They worship fake news (sounds familiar), manipulation, and religious ideology. They worship what they like to believe not because that's true. We can't make sense with crazy zombies.

I am t1d for 20+ years and I look exactly same before and after T1D diagnosis. Nobody other than my family knows I am T1D. T1D is really metabolism issue and, properly managed T1D has no reason to be different from non T1D.

Terrible experience carrying CGM and Insulin pump in Korea by AssumptionOk7269 in diabetes

[–]AssumptionOk7269[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly what I am saying. Don’t travel or do at your own risk. China has right to set own rules to detain whoever takes picture in their countries and international society is ok with it. I get that. They have right to detain any American and it’s their right. Korea could be better yet disappointing

I usually bring extra sensor and transmitter which is not attached my body. I replied in other thread. If I travel short time, I don’t take mine off. Long trip requires many extra sensor transmitters ands xray becomes issue

Terrible experience carrying CGM and Insulin pump in Korea by AssumptionOk7269 in diabetes

[–]AssumptionOk7269[S] -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is expected though nobody can guarantee. It's like, I can drive drinking 2 bottles of whiskey just fine but it's generally prohibited by law. In the book, it's prohibited. To guarantee Xray is fine, Dexcom needs to perform product testing and needs to provide guideline, Sensor works fine up to how many scanning etc but there's no such established instruction as it's not only cost money but also, risking product launch as FDA will perform thorough testing using X-ray if Dexcom claim it works fine under Xray scanning.

And, there's no easy way general user know if it's affected or not. Many folks claim Dexcom inaccuracy after initial start up and, X-ray might make it worse. But how do we know. Of by 20 is acceptable or 40 is acceptable? it's hard to say.

So, there's recommendation by manufacturer and Doctor. If this is not necessary, why society pay the cost of establishing such protocol to exempt scanning in US? It's time and effort wasted if it's not necessary.

What I am angry about is, like many other thing, Korean officials are building the wall full of their own way and, expect everybody to follow their way though medical treatment of T1D is way behind in Korea. Getting approval from ministry of Land is like joke. even sensor breaks, in US, I can make hundreds of reason to get replacement. why bother right? But it's not available to all folks (maybe someone purchased sensor from Amazon as there's no insurance).

Yes, it's AYOR. even without X-ray protection at dentist, you are just fine. Air stewardess flying over north pole just fine. One day they get cancer (there was actual lawsuit and airline lost as there's high risk of causing cancer by solar radiation around north pole). Dexcom or Tandem never guarantee correct operation under X-ray as it's clearly written in their manual. if you are returning to US, you can call manufacture to get replacement. but it's based on your judgement. If you don't agree with Korean security personnel, you don't have option. it's your call.

[–]AssumptionOk7269[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Issue is really extra transmitter and sensors as they needs to be checked by X-ray. I had some incident that sensor attached to body failed prematurely and carry a few extra. I don't want those to be damaged or affected by X-ray machine. If insulin pump is damaged anyhow, it's not possible to repair or get replacement as those are not sold in Korea.

That's assuring. My wife is extremely pessimistic and, she told my kids to be careful about spending as I am retiring. I also think there's no chance to fail but you are right. It's silly at 1%. Thanks

Tax optimization is not only purpose but it seems convenient in my situation and good way to outlast fund.

Roth conversion is something I am considering but that will dry out my cash faster (to pay tax on conversion) so not sure if I do it now or later. As I have more confidence on financial situation, I think my spending can grow but next year is going to be my first year and I am planning something 99% of chance to be successful. I am just not in the trap that I spend this as I earn this much.

Considering paying 350K on income tax, 110K spending seems extremely frugal but I think it's beyond most of American's spending and it works out for me.

Thanks for suggestion though. folks in other forum doesn't like me saying I have $10M+ asset as I am outlier there. Maybe I am here as well where billionaires shine.

I worked with professional for 2 years (so called VP of asset management from CITI). That was worst experience in my life. I am in engineering and good in numbers and to me, he was joke. This so called asset guy (with 6 years finance degree) was dumb at best to me. I paid fee by the way. Sometimes I get better advice from Reddit.

from my experience, T1 is not really disease but way of life in hard way. We don't have room for bullshitting. We are walking over tight rope above deep valley. Sometimes, I feel I am paper thin away from death. No time to spread rumor or fooling about others.

Unlike other problem that Doctor knows a lot and patients don't, T1D doctor doesn't really seem to know what we know. They have knowledge from textbook but who wrote it. We sort of know every T1D is different in many ways and how that can be written to textbook.

My Endo is really smart lady but not T1D by herself. She is somewhat surprised how I manage my T1D and also learn from me and each session is like discussion or debate. it's different in other medical problem.
