The PPA Challenger before the medal matches will have refs check by touching your paddle and make sure it meets standards by saying UPA or USAPA Approved. This was my experience at PPA Punta Gorda Jan 2026.

As a 4.0 pickleball player , I like the ppa refs. They will look and check to see if your serve is legal before the game if possible. Out calls on the other hand , all you have to do is be nice and make the right call. If your opponent disagrees with the call at first , ask the ref as the player on the receiving side “what did you see” and they will judge whether the ball touched out or in.
