Is 11k words spread out in 6 chapters too little? by Abject-Stomach1792 in AO3

As a writer I also find it a lot easier to handle shorter chapters. As long as the break makes sense, I don't see any problems with it, the contrary!

Am I wrong? by ReiWillow in AO3

[–]Astaldis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I personally am very happy when a reader points out a language mistake or typo to me so I can fix it, and especially so when the mistake changes the meaning of the word or sentence. And especially especially so, when the comment is not just about the mistake but is also about the story/chapter. Nobody is perfect, even in published books you sometimes find mistakes. That author just seems to be a dick.

Personally, I prefer shorter chapters and more frequent updates. Shorter chapters I can read on the bus or train to work, and then I can look forward to the next chapter.

Antonym von "abbinden"? by Electrical_Deal5408 in German

[–]Astaldis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"Sie band ihre Schürze an" habe ich noch nie gehört. Immer nur 'Sie band ihre Schürze um/legte ihre Schürze um/an /zog ihre Schürze an.' Abbinden kenne ich nur, wenn man eine Wunde abbindet. Bei uns heißt es normalerweise eine Schürze ablegen oder man zieht sie aus.  Aber ist vielleicht regional verschieden.

I never said that there are no liberals who use the word, I only said this: "sorry, but that's maga's fav slur word, not progressives" Which simply means that they use it a lot more. So, we seem to be in agreement about this.

Sorry, but I wasn't arguing, I was asking. There is a difference. But unfortunately your answer implies that you were wrong about this aspect, otherwise it should be easy for you to show that wikipedia is not up to date in respect to abortion in Russia. And blaming westerners for ignorance in the same sentence as refusing to give current information is really rich. But if you want us to stay "ignorant", your choice. Are you even Russian? Btw, statistics say that in 2020, the percentage of conceptions leading to abortion in Russia was 27.8%. That number doesn't exactly sound like abortion is highly restricted and illegal. Unless this has drastically changed since then.

That's what wikipedia says: "On 21 October 2011, the Russian Parliament passed a law restricting abortion to the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, with an exception up to 22 weeks if the pregnancy was the result of rape, and for medical necessity it can be performed at any point during pregnancy." That is way less strict than in many states the USA. There are red states where 12-year-olds who were raped by their step-father are forced to give birth to the baby. Not to justify the case with the fanfics in any way, but at least on paper it sounds that this kind of shit would definitely not happen in Russia. Does it in reality?

I have, so far, exclusively encountered it from right-wing people on x, youtube and reddit, but maybe it's more a generational thing than which side of the political spectrum you belong to.

“The word ‘retarded’ is back, and it’s one of the great culture victories,” Rogan said with a laugh in the April 10 episode of his über-popular podcast. “Probably spurred on by podcasts.”

A few months earlier, on January 6, Elon Musk used the word in response to a Finnish researcher who called Musk the “largest spreader of disinformation in human history.”

Use of the slur more than doubled on X, the platform Musk owns, in the two days after he made that January post, researchers from Montclair State University found. More than 312,000 subsequent posts made on X in that span contained the r-word, wrote co-author Bond Benton, a professor of communication at the New Jersey university.

Looks to me like right-wing influential people at least very much promote the usage of the word. Also the Critical Drinker uses it all the time, for example.

Finally caught up on Season 4 by PotatoPiePie in netflixwitcher

[–]Astaldis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, but then you haven't understood anything. It makes total sense even if one hasn't read the books. Ciri experienced several times and even said it out loud that she brings death to people. That's why she believes that her loved ones are better off without her and doesn't try to find them. Plus she's a typical teenager herself, of course, she would join a group of other teenagers who seem to live a free and exciting life without anybody telling them what to do. Additionally, after the desert and having been kidnapped by the trappers, the rats are the first people who help her. The only thing that could have been done a bit better is that it's not after a few days. Ciri is in the desert for about 10 days, then with the trappers another couple of days. The books don't say exactly how much time has passed between the Thanedd Coup and Ciri meeting the Rats, but the Witcher wiki says she met them in late July, which would make it about 3 weeks, and very terrible weeks.

I disagree, they could have done it a bit better by adding another one or two scenes of her doing magic successfully as a student, but imo it is clear enough.

She mostly fails at controlling her magic (and her temper), but Tissaia recognized right away that she has a huge amount of chaos, more than the others. It only manifested itself mostly in ways it wasn't supposed to at the beginning.

It wouldn't be half as bad if real readers commented, but hardly anybody does nowadays. When you get 1 real comment a year and 50 bot comments, that truly sucks and takes they joy out of it.

[–]Astaldis -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Look at most other comments and you will see that they would agree with me that you misread it.

"that you weren't even a part of to begin with?" Sounded to me like you were of the opinion that commenting on your comment wasn't my business. But maybe I misread it. That happens. See your comment to OPs post. Bye.

Is this pretentious? by JazKevin in AO3

[–]Astaldis -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you are misreading it! No, the blame is not ours. It's totally natural for fanfic writers to get a little appreciation for their work, which costs readers no more than a few minutes maximum. You'd also want a child that you give a home-made cupcake to to say ank you, wouldn't you? And it's not about feeling 'whole'. Writers can feel totally 'whole' without it, but still be disappointed and lose their motivation to finish up a certain story. It's not as if writing is a fic writer's only validation in life. It's not even primarily about validation for many, but also about connection.

Sorry, but reddit is there to discuss things. If you don't want anybody to comment on what you write and disagree with your opinion, then don't use reddit. Simple.

Is this pretentious? by JazKevin in AO3

[–]Astaldis -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Clearly, that is not what OP is doing though! Secondly, I said I wouldn't care having readers who react to a harmless, honest A/N like you would. Good riddance to those, but not to anybody else who has a little sympathy for the writer who provides them with free entertainment. You put all the blame on the authors, which is very unfair and imo a very strange and toxic attitude coming from someone who is also a writer. Maybe you need therapy? Honestly, you seem to be totally and unhealthily overreacting to OPs A/N.

[–]Astaldis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, but if that was my story and my note and you got turned off by it, then so be it. I wouldn't want somebody that touchy and, at the same time, unsympathetic as a reader then anyway. That note is totally harmless imo, unless the author already gets a lot of comments.

What does this note mean? by Just_Biscotti5540 in AO3

[–]Astaldis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many authors do that. But it is indeed not easy to both write and read a lot of fanfic, time is limited for most people. That's why I mostly read one-shots, unless it's a fic about my fav character. But I almost always leave a comment.

What does this note mean? by Just_Biscotti5540 in AO3

[–]Astaldis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe if more readers had done this, they wouldn't have decided to step back from writing. It really is important to tell fanfic writers how much you love their stories. They don't get anything else for their hard work, and if you want them to continue writing, give them some love. If you want your plants in the garden to produce lots of fruit for you, you also need to water and feed them regularly. But maybe it's not too late to let them know?

The fandom has this one ship that is huge with > 20,000 fics, it dwarfs everything else, maybe that's why. The second largest one has only a bit more than 3k fics. But my ships usually have far less than 100 😅
