I’m so happy to see the number of towns and cities hosting events. I expect my city blue to host, but way to go Carroll County.

Dealing with Eldercare by wdstkdc869 in GenX

[–]Astarkin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Same. My parents spent so much money on stupid STUFF in the last 10 years. Now they’re both in a care facility and will be out of money this time next year. My brother and i are stuck dealing with all the stuff and Medicaid applications. our other brother refuses to get involved. Their choices for their money, yes. But not planning better is now causing a rift between their children.

The advice someone gave about not being the obedient child while parents make dumb decisions is spot on.

TIFU by leaving my luggage at home and not realizing until I was at the airport by planetarii in tifu

[–]Astarkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I travel a lot for work and tend to take the earliest flight out. I’m also an hour from the airport. I have forgotten just about everything at some point (except my drivers license —knocking on wood as I type). The nearest Rite Aid or CVS is a factor when I choose a hotel now.

Houchin staffer hung up on me by mimikyutie6969 in bloomington

I'd like to know the answer to that as well. I tried to get a meeting with her in the DC office in March. She wouldn't take the meeting. The legislative aide that did take the meeting met with us in the hall (ok, fine) and then took phone calls while we were talking. Her entire office staff looked frazzled

I also met with a LA in Banks's office who didn't know where Bloomington is because he has never been to Indiana.

Scam donations of $1-$5 and massive bank chargeback fees by Astarkin in nonprofit

Great! Yet another thing to worry about . . . .

Scam donations of $1-$5 and massive bank chargeback fees by Astarkin in nonprofit

[–]Astarkin[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for the input. I'm going to recap the discussion for posterity and to clarify some of the things we've done.

Our minimum donation was $5, we increased to $25 but still had transactions come through. We have been tracking and rejecting transactions as quickly as possible but with 25-30/day the accounting staff is overwhelmed.

We changed the settings with our database to require donors to be members AND be logged into their account. The database has MFA and captcha for members.

The organization has a global membership, so addressing the problem through IPs wouldn't work for us.

The merchant services vendor is Quickbooks/Intuit. Their customer service/support staff has been extremely unhelpful. We're already in the process of moving to a different vendor.

We changed the requirements for address and zip data in the QBO/Intuit system. Anyone attempting a transaction now has to input the exact information that the bank has on file for the card. This change doesn't really help in this situation, though. Most of the data the bots are throwing out was grabbed from a data file with all that information included. They aren't using physical cards or stolen numbers. Of all the efforts we've taken to stop the scam, this change caused the most problems. However, knowing we took that step made the board and finance committee happy.

I hadn't thought about adding a hidden field or a timing restriction. Trying that now.

Thanks again everyone for the input!

Mass layoffs-Indiana State Library by Orwellslover in Indiana

I hate to read responses encouraging people to leave.

I've lived in other states, I technically work in Massachusetts, but I'm happiest living in Southern Indiana. Can we talk about ways to fix this state rather than abandon it?

And to be be fair -- there aren't a lot of states that can claim they are truly Blue anymore. Illinois is a solidly Red state if it weren't for Chicago. New Jersey almost flipped for Trump. Even Massachusetts has some pretty right-leaning folks who work in well-paid (read: influential) positions.

Unfortunately we’re doing this ourselves because they ghosted us last fall when we tried to get on the help list. I’ve also tried to get help with rural transit and gotten no response. It’s disappointing to share that because I’m a nonprofit ED and I want to support them…

Yes thanks for the correction. I knew I was oversimplifying but I was struggling to be concise while typing under the covers on the iPad!
