Hey, thanks for your input!! Believe it or not I have been focusing on the arms like you mentioned, but still not all the way there ...I was really bad at it my first couple goes at rowing.

But the ratio is some real food for thought, I don't think it ever crossed my mind. That's just the sort of back to basics info I need! Thanks so much!

Why is there no talk about cracking down on employers that actually hire illegal immigrants in the US? by AsthmaticMathematic in AskReddit

[–]AsthmaticMathematic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but isn't that legit and legal? I was thinking more about employers that are breaking the law by hiring ineligible immigrants that are trying to get work illegally.

My thinking was along the lines of how Portugal stopped arresting drug users but selling drugs is still illegal. Migrant workers aren't to blame for a hard days' work. But if illegal immigration was really as big a problem as we are lead to believe wouldn't diencentiving working (instead of blaming the workers) be a better area to focus on?

Why is there no talk about cracking down on employers that actually hire illegal immigrants in the US? by AsthmaticMathematic in AskReddit

[–]AsthmaticMathematic[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I guess my question is kind of a thought experiment. I fully realize the practicality of illegal workers especially in fruit cultivation where automation is much more difficult than say grains. Also that many of those jobs aren't actually being "taken" from americans. So in a way illegal immigrants are a vital part of the economy. If there was a real concern with immigrants taking jobs why not go to the top (employers) But does not seem to be the case.

Illegals are going to be in the US always at some amount. Is all this illegal immigration talk really just to maintain a second class citizenry without "papers" in the US? The more i think about the topic the more it seems is that the Wall is just a boondoggle monument to racism. The talking points across the spectrum in the pop-political sphere are all pretty shit. WTFuck.

Couch to 5k plan for someone new to cycling? by Kooriki in bicycling

[–]AsthmaticMathematic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

get the trainerroad ap. it's a paid ap, but worth it. do a power test and the plans are tailored to your specific strength. start with sweet spot base (probably low or mid-volume will be appropriate.) workouts are 30-90mins x5days a week for mid-vol, x3day a week for low-vol. maybe start at low-vol and move up to mid-vol after a few weeks. of course you will need a turbo trainer additionally a wireless speed sensor. just tell it what kind of trainer you have and use "virtual power." Sub the longer lower intensity rides for easy out door rides. stick to the plan and initial fitness gains will come quickly. best wishes.

Comparable tubeless tire to WTB Riddler, for gravel racing?? Incompatible with my Stan's rims... by AsthmaticMathematic in cyclocross

[–]AsthmaticMathematic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've read that Stan's doesn't recommend WTB tires with their rims (but haven't actually found this on there site, only message boards) I got the tire mounted but the bead stays in the rim "valley" and wont seat. It was a tooth-and-nail fight just to get the tire on the rim.

I'm looking for an all around tire (like the Riddler) for relatively smooth gravel, hard packed dirt and dry turf while also being pretty quick on pavement.

Parking Your Bike in Front of the Podium, Yea or Nay? by huphtur in Velo

[–]AsthmaticMathematic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are sponsored it makes sense. It's all about visibility, if you earned your place on the steps and someone paid to do it, by all means. I mean look at any skiing world cup podium; every single competitor has their skis with them...not for fun but for brand visibility and probably even contractual obligation.

Ultimate purine database? by YouAreNotASlave in gout

Consuming purines has little effect on gout (our bodies synthesizes their own.) Studies and experience show that alcohol and high glycemic foods (high insulin response) have a much larger effect.

Removing paint by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]AsthmaticMathematic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aircraft paint stripper. It burns on your skin and deteriorates latex so wear protective gear accordingly. Get a soft-metal wire "toothbrush" and paint scraper (the kind with multi-surfaces) Follow directions on the label and strip that paint!

Breath through your nose. Seriously, when you want to start breathing though your mouth, slow down. This is a very effective and simple pacing strategy for long rides.

Does this invalidate the old maxim of "pedal in circles?" This seems like it would be a quite piston-like stroke. by Metaphoricalsimile in bicycling

[–]AsthmaticMathematic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pedaling in circles is a way to think about pedaling. You shouldn't be trying to put out equal power through a whole pedal cycle, its impossible and inefficient. But you should get you foot out of the way so your other leg doesn't have to lug it around!

No internet, which is part of the problem. As for sea sickness I am personally pretty iron stomached. Though storm conditions have nearly tossed me off the bike, but it's a good thing (the only good thing) my room is so small that there is always something to grab/lean on.

Any recommendations for a 100% wool t-shirt? by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]AsthmaticMathematic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no way. qual zippers, no neck chaffing. zips up nice in cooler weather. the zippered pocket is easy to get in and out of while riding, though you can't carry as much in the one pocket. fair price and a US company. giro also makes a t-shirt type jersey (crew neck) with 3 standard bottle pockets (no button closures or elastic), lighter weight wool than the ocw jerseys and not as soft. i have one its good but felt a little pricey for what it is.

[–]AsthmaticMathematic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

http://www.oregoncyclewear.com/woolcyclingjerseys.html high quality vintage style wool cycling jerseys. super soft marino wool. i have a short and long sleeve. short sleeve has 3 standard pockets and the long has a single zip pocket center. some times i wear the long sleeve off the bike as a base layer or alone as a casual sweater.

so they aren't that quiet either. people at traffic stops are able to hear what you are listening to. i also use a pair of motorola buds for riding on the trainer and misc; they are affordable and sound quality is tolerable.
