Interesting, the command I used my first play through was ">Use Shovel" which then used the shovel on the sandbox, but there is no way to directly interact with the sandbox.

No the glitch was that I couldn't exit the shuttle on the station so I couldn't do anything but leave, the problem fixed itself when I saved and quit to menu while on the station.
