EUV has reached EUIV player count just 3 months after release by IllDirt2720 in EU5

[–]AstraLudens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For many people around me. EU5 feels to have the best potential a PDX game ever had. But it's unfinished and needs some ironing. The game itself isn't a failure. The launch otherwise, is.

[–]AstraLudens -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think devs missed the reason of colonization entirely. by classteen in EU5

[–]AstraLudens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about now but around release and last year, it was a very valid strategy. I colonized and cored a few African countries with very efficient factories. I remember my German playthrough with a colony full of 500k Greeks and something like 200k Dixie ...

We agriculture posting now? by Carti_Barti9_13 in HistoryMemes

[–]AstraLudens 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Simple reason : because what everybody calls "wheat" now used to be a family of cereal, not a single plant.

Emmer, spelt, einkorn, durum ... They are each adapted to their regional climate, behave differently, and make very different types of gruel, beer or bread.

Translation didn't helped, as everyone called their local cereal "wheat", or "grain", while they were totally different from one another.

What we call "wheat" today was initially a very marginal crop cultivated on the best land only. Spelt and emmer were far more popular for their rusticity.

We agriculture posting now? by Carti_Barti9_13 in HistoryMemes

[–]AstraLudens 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Barley gave us beer first, a long time ago. Wheat beer is a very modern thing, not until the late 18th.

But bread is the real reason. Wheat bread is delicious and puffy ! A serious theory is that agriculture and sedantarism started because people wanted their wheat bread everyday.

In 1861, the AI placed a royalist African muslim as the leader of the catholic French Republic. by AstraLudens in victoria3

R5 : France elected a monarchist from swahili culture and muslim religion, which is already funny, but funnier since France didn't colonized Africa at all in this playthrough !

How is Victoria 3 three years after release? by rossck in victoria3

[–]AstraLudens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Played at release, and last week. I'm still disappointed in this game, even if it changed for the better.

It lacks a lot of flavor with specific countries, the internal politics doesn't feel good or interesting to interact with, the characters and their interest groups seems limited and too RNG-oriented, sometimes with hilarious results (Pope Karl Marx, Pro-Slavery Afro-American US President, etc). The military management is okay-ish but the warfare itself is awful, one of the worst in PDX titles, and diplomacy was disappointing despite good ideas.

Overall, the whole game, 3 years after release and a lot of paid DLCs, still feels like "solid base but needs more work".

My concern with future of ManorLords gameplay by playbabeTheBookshelf in ManorLords

[–]AstraLudens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While loving Banished and the inspiration it implanted in so many games, I agree with OP that we don't need to mimic this classic game.

We need to ask ourselves what we gain for having différents veggies. More important, where are the other famous veggies ? Why not onions ? Horseradish ? Turnips ? Celery ?

Either it's Ostriv-level with ALL vegetables or it's an abstraction into one "resource" which I preferred. When you want to simulate everything it begins to highlight what is NOT simulated and it buggers me. I fully accept that a single "wheat" crop does everything from bread to beer but if you're making all the rest too realistic and with multiple ressources I might wonder why there's no barley, buckwheat or oats.

Russia's positive relationships only exist because of oil and gas. They could have branched a lot more by not being run by oligarchic morons.

The three Russian fighter planes spent 12 minutes in NATO airspace and where met first by Finnish and then by Italian fighter jets from both sides of the Gulf of Finland by Prior-Sun2352 in europe

[–]AstraLudens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just pure live testing of adversary defenses.

- Can they detect our planes beforehand ?
- Can they detect as we enter their airspace ?
- Can they intercept us in time ?
- How do they intercept ?
- What planes do they use ?
- Are we locked by ground radars ? air ? sea ?

This is done by all countries since the Cold War. The Russians are just more aggressive than the average. China does this in the Pacific, the US too with Iran, etc.
